Govt will have to increase import duty to boost local manufacturing: Nitin Gadkari

New Delhi: Union Minister Nitin Gadkari on Saturday (August 8) said that the government will consider increasing duties on sectors heavily dependent on imports in a bid to encourage domestic production, particularly by small industries. Speaking at the India @75 summit organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), he said: “Because unless we meet what China is producing in volume, our costs will not come down. This is why we have to see that we increase the duty and encourage Indian manufacturers. When production happens in bulk, we can naturally make it competitive.”

18 people have lost their lives and over 100 have been injured in the mishap that happened in Calicut Airport yesterday. Around 23 passengers are reportedly in a critical condition as of now. Aviation regulator DGCA had issued a show-cause notice to the director of the Kozhikode airport on July 11 last year after it found "various critical safety lapses" in different places, including the runway and the apron. Former Civil Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju alleged that IUML and the CM had sought clearance for wide-body aircraft. TIMES NOW's Heena explains what actually happened at the Kozhikode airport yesterday.

President Trump is broadly prohibiting unspecified 'transactions' with Chinese owners of TikTok and WeChat via executive order in 45 days. WeChat and its sister app Weixin in China are hugely popular messaging apps. TikTok has hundreds of millions of users globally. By going after TikTok and WeChat, the U.S. is expanding a fight against Beijing using Chinese-style restrictions on tech companies in a move that could potentially have enormous ramifications for the world’s biggest economies.

India may not tax Microsoft-TikTok deal, here's why

Any acquisition by Microsoft of TikTok that includes the video-streaming app’s India business is unlikely to incur tax locally, said officials and experts. Under the controversial 2012 retrospective tax amendment that ensnared Vodafone, indirect transfers of Indian assets are taxable even if deals are executed overseas. However, this is triggered only when the value of the Indian asset is more than half that of the total transaction.
