  • Sunil Gavaskar Has His Say On India's Next Test Captain After Virat Kohli And More Cricket News

Sunil Gavaskar Has His Say On India's Next Test Captain After Virat Kohli And More Cricket News

Former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly said that Team India have taken giant strides over the years under the leadership of Virat Kohli. Indian cricket was in deep turmoil when Kohli took over from MS Dhoni in the purest format back in December 2014. The Jharkhand-born Dhoni retired from Test cricket following which the now 33-year-old took charge of the Test team.

Seven years since then, Kohli is India’s most successful Test captain after he toppled Dhoni’s tally during the 2019 tour of the West Indies. On Saturday, January 15, Kohli stepped down as India’s skipper in Test cricket. Ganguly, who’s the president of the BCCI, said that Kohli’s decision was personal and stated that the Indian board respected his decision with an open heart.

Gavaskar who captained India in the 1970s, wants India selectors to make Pant the next captain and revealed the reason for it with the best example of Rohit for the Mumbai Indians. Ever since Rohit took over the captaincy for Mumbai in 2013, he has won five IPL titles and is the most successful captain in the history of the tournament so far. Gavaskar also opined that Pant will be able to play a lot more big innings if he is given the responsibility.

“If you ask me, I am still staying, I would look at Rishabh Pant as next India captain. For one reason only, just like Rohit Sharma was given the captaincy of Mumbai Indians when Ricky Ponting stepped down, look at the change in his batting after that. Suddenly the responsibility of being captain made him convert those beautiful cameos of 30s, 40s and 50s into hundreds, 150s and 200s.

Virat Kohli stunned the cricketing fraternity announcing his decision to step down as India’s Test captain on Saturday (January 15). Soon after he made his decision public, current and former cricketers came up with the messages congratulating Kohli for taking the Test team to newer heights during his seven-year stint. However, his stint as captain of India across all form

Sunil Gavaskar Slams India's Approach In The third Test And More News

Legendary batter Sunil Gavaskar wasn’t overly happy with the tactics Team India employed during the fourth day of their third Test against South Africa at the Newlands in Cape Town. The game was nicely poised ahead of the penultimate day as the Proteas needed 111 runs to win with eight wickets in hand.

But the hosts made light work of the run-chase as they tracked down the target in 63.3 overs. Keegan Petersen became the Player of the Match for scoring vital half-centuries in both innings. He also got the Player of the Series award.

“It was a mystery to me why Shardul Thakur and Jasprit Bumrah did not bowl after lunch. It was almost as if India had decided that they are not going to win this,” Gavaskar was quoted as saying.

“The field placements there were for Ashwin was not right… There were singles available easily. Five fielders were in the deep. Let the batters take a chance. That is your only opportunity to get them out,” he stated.

Gavaskar, in the meantime, had words of praises for the Proteas for showing a great amount of character on a difficult surface to bat on at the Newlands.

“The pitches weren’t the best for batting but the application shown by the South Africans in Johannesburg, the application shown by them in this Test as well has been praiseworthy. That showed the character of the team,” Gavaskar added.

England fast bowler Stuart Broad was a tad agitated during the second day’s play of the fifth and final Ashes Test against Australia at the Bellerive Oval in Hobart. During the 63rd over of the first innings, the 35-year-old pulled out of his run-up after reaching the bowling crease. The camera that was behind the left-handed batter, Mitchell Starc, distracted him to a large extent.

The camera generally hovers around the boundary and it acted as a big distraction for Broad, England’s second-highest wicket-taker in Test cricket after James Anderson. “Stop moving the robot,” yelled Broad a

Saeed Ajmal opines on the debatable DRS call on Dean Elgan and more news

Former Pakistan spinner Saeed Ajmal has given his verdict on the Dean Elgar DRS drama, stating he felt the South Africa skipper was undoubtedly out. Elgar survived a close lbw shout on the third day of the Cape Town Test against India when he had the on-field umpire’s decision overturned.

Elgar was rapped on the pads by Ravichandran Ashwin in the 21st over, and while it appeared he was struck rather plumb, the ball-tracking technology reckoned otherwise, leading to plenty of raised eyebrows and reactions by the Indian players, who alleged the host broadcaster, SuperSport, for foul play.

After the decision was overturned, a visibly annoyed Virat Kohli walked up to the stump mic and said: “Focus on your team while they shine the ball. Not just the opposition. Trying to catch people all the time.”

Moments later, the mic caught KL Rahul saying: “It’s the whole country against 11 guys”, while Ashwin, who was denied the wicket, said: “You should find better ways to win, SuperSport.” Not just the Indian players but even umpire Marias Erasmus, who had given the original decision, was heard saying, “That is impossible”.

Opening up on the episode, Ajmal reckoned that given where the ball had hit Elgar on the pads, it could not have missed the stumps in any way whatsoever.

“I’ve watched the Dean Elgar review a few times today. There is no way that the ball was going over the stumps. The ball hit him on the knee-roll and he was out,” he was quoted by Saj Sadiq on Twitter.

Paras Mhambrey, India’s bowling coach, said during the day-end press conference: “We saw it, you saw it. I’ll leave that for the match referee to have a look at it. There’s nothing I can comment on it now. We’ve seen it all, just want to move on with the game now.”

While nearly everyone has agreed with how the dismissal should have turned out, many have questioned the on-field conduct of Indian players.

“There was an insinuation from the I

  • South Africa and Sri Lanka could be back up hosts for IPL 2022 and more news

South Africa and Sri Lanka could be back up hosts for IPL 2022 and more news

With the COVID-19 pandemic at its peak in India, there are enough doubts over the 2022 Indian Premier League (IPL) taking place in the country. Hence, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has kept a contingency plan in place in case the T20 tournament has to be shifted out of India.

Even as in 2020, the entire IPL took place in the United Arab Emirates, in 2021, the championship had to be partially moved out of India after emergence of COVID-19 cases in the team camps. But for the upcoming edition, the world’s richest cricket board isn’t completely dependent on the UAE.

If reports are to be believed, as a part of Plan B, the BCCI has kept South Africa and Sri Lanka as backup hosts. Back in 2009, South Africa hosted the IPL, although due to completely different reasons. Lanka is yet to host the IPL as of now.

“We can’t be dependent on UAE all the time so we decided to explore more options, South Africa’s time difference also works out well for the players,” a BCCI official was quoted as saying in the New Indian Express.

South Africa, of late, has hosted two series pretty successfully. Earlier, the three-match unofficial Tests between India A and South Africa A took place after which the senior teams locked horns.

“The place where the team was staying for the second Test is spread over several acres. There were walking tracks and even a pond on the property and that has made things easier for the players who for the last couple of years or so have been confined to their rooms on several overseas tours,” an official said.

The BCCI has had it fair share of travails of late in the wake of the pandemic. The upcoming edition of the Ranji Trophy had to be postponed indefinitely due to COVID-19 cases in the camps. The domestic U19 Cooch Behar Trophy had to be halted midway because of several positive cases.

The mega auction for the IPL 2022 is expected to take place in the month of February. The upcom

A special tribute to the greatest Indian Test captain; Virat Kohli

In what can be called a shocking announcement, Virat Kohli has stepped down as India’s Test captain. The 33-year-old took to Twitter on Saturday (January 15) and informed about the same. Kohli’s jaw-dropping decision came a day after India’s Test series defeat against South Africa. India, despite having a 1-0 lead, failed to win their maiden Test series in the rainbow nation.

The same earned them a lot of criticism. However, Kohli leaving Test captaincy never seemed on the cards. Kohli, in his statement, thanked the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for giving him the opportunity of leading the nation. He also thanked former coach Ravi Shastri and ex-captain MS Dhoni for supporting him in his journey. Kohli, who stepped down as India’s white-ball captain last year, also said he feels it’s the right time for him to step down as Test captain.

Rohit Sharma was named the new captain for India in limited-overs cricket.

Kohli captained India in 68 Tests, winning 40 of them and losing just 17 with a win percentage of 58.82.

The upcom

Doubts Over English Players Involvement In IPL And More News

England have produced a poor performance in the 2021-22 Ashes series against Australia. The Joe Root-led side has already surrendered the series, and is currently 0-3 down.

As a result, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is now planning to restrict the involvement of the England cricketers in the Indian Premier League (IPL) henceforth.

In fact, the Managing Director of the ECB, Ashley Giles is even preparing a full-fledged report so that the England Test team’s performance can be improved in the future.

English pace bowler Jofra Archer is known for his older tweets that resonate with the current situations. His tweets have gone viral on several occasions and the same happened on January 11 when Virat Kohli failed to score a century in the ongoing third Test against South Africa. Earlier, Kohli won the toss and elected to bat.

Mayank Agarwal and KL Rahul opened the innings for India and they both struggled to score runs initially. The South African bowlers set a perfect trap for both the openers and they perished. Duanne Olivier dismissed Rahul for 12 runs while Kagiso Rabada picked the wicket of Mayank. Kohli walked in after Mayank’s dismissal and joined Cheteshwar Pujara in the middle.

Pujara and Kohli added 62 runs for the fourth wicket before Marco Jansen dismissed the former for 43 runs off 77 balls. The Indian batting unit repeated the same story that has been going around since the first Test. India lost wickets in bunches but Kohli kept looking for runs. Fans also saw a glimpse of vintage Kohli as the Indian captain played his signature cover drives. Kohli even hit a six off Rabada’s bowling which was only the second six hit by him in the last 29 innings.

Kohli nicked the third ball of the 73rd over and his innings of 79 runs off 201 deliveries came to an end after wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne completed the catch. He was looking in great touch but due to the lack of partners, on the other hand, he ha

Top 10 players with most number of wickets in the history of T20 cricket

Twenty20, the brash form of cricket, is generally referred to as a batsman’s format. But, this fact doesn’t hold true for some of the extraordinary bowlers around the world. With the conditions favoring them on most occasions, the batsmen may often act as bullies, tearing them apart mercilessly. But the bowlers too have adapted and have found ways to get better of their opponents. Some bowlers, with their brilliant performances, have shown that the T20 format is not all about bowlers getting thrashed.

Similarly, we try to list out the ten bowlers who have topped the bowling charts with the most wickets in Twenty20.

Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has been one of the leading wicket-taker for his side in the 20-over format. He previously had an impressive average of 6.81 in T20Is and has one fifer in the format. He registered his best bowling figures of 5/20 against the West Indies in 2018.

Afghanistan spinner Rashid Khan is regarded as the best spinner in T20 cricket currently. He picked up 95 wickets in only 51 T20Is played with an excellent average of 12.63 and a strike rate of 12.1. Rashid registered his best bowling figures of 5/3 against Ireland in 2017.

Pakistan All-rounder Shahid Afridi is also among the highest wicket-taker for his country in T20Is. He has had 98 scalps to his name in 99 games at an average of 24.44 and a strike rate of 22.1. He has picked up three 4-wicket hauls in the format with best innings figures of 4/11.

Sri Lankan pacer Lasith Malinga is the leading wicket-taker in the T20 Internationals history. He is the only bowler to pick two hat-tricks in T20Is.

Vivo Set To Pull Out Of IPL Sponsorship And More News

Pakistan Cricket Board(PCB) has signed an agreement with the franchises of the Pakistan Super League(PSL) in a meeting held on January 10th regarding the Covid-19 situation. The tournament could possibly witness a Covid-19 outbreak in the middle, and hence, the plans for the worst situation have been put forward already. The teams have now agreed to take the field if they have 13 players who have tested negative for Covid-19.

The agreement also included preparing a pool of 25 players who haven’t been picked up in the drafts or the replacements and they will be isolated in the bio bubble. The franchises can pick up players from the pool in order to satisfy their quota of 13 players. It has to be noted that the players have to undergo three-day quarantine and will have to clear the PCR test before taking part in the PSL 2022 edition.

According to the sources from Dawn, A PCB spokesperson had also noted about the tournament being completed in the scheduled time. The tournament could be halted for seven days in case of Covid-19 severe outbreak but will resume with a lot of doubleheaders in order to complete within the time. The PSL is scheduled to start on January 27 and will end by February 27th.

It has been revealed that the reason behind accomodating PSL in the tough times is due to the tight home schedule coming up later this year. Australia, England, and New Zealand have all agreed to tour Pakistan for bilateral series and this is a huge step in earning the trust of the boards. Not many teams have been touring Pakistan after the 2009 gunfire attack on the Sri Lankan team bus.

South Africa all-rounder Chris Morris has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket on Tuesday, January 11. The 34-year-old has brought the curtains down on his 12-year-old long career that started in 2009 with a first-class match. Morris last played for the Titans in their game against Boland in the four-day franchise series match at the Boland Par

BCCI Planning To Host Entire IPL 2022 In Maharashtra & More Cricket News

If reports are to believed, the Board of Control for India (BCCI) is planning to host the entirety of the 2022 Indian Premier league (IPL) in Maharashtra keeping in mind the COVID-19 pandemic in the country. Due to the rapid rise of coronavirus cases in the nation, the world’s richest cricket board is looking to implement Plan B for the smooth running of the upcoming IPL edition.

In the last two years, the BCCI faced challenges in hosting the T20 league. Even as the entire IPL 2020 took place in the United Arab Emirates, the 2021 season had to be shifted out of India because of the emergence of COVID-19 cases in the team camps.

Going by reports, the BCCI is planning to host the upcoming IPL season at four venues – the Wankhede Stadium, the Brabourne Stadium, the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai and the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Gahunje, near Pune.

“On January 5, Hemang Amin (BCCI’s interim CEO and the Chief Operating Officer of the IPL) approached Vijay Patil (Mumbai Cricket Association president) in this regard, on the sidelines of the MCA’s Apex Council meeting. Subsequently, a few days later, Amin and Patil met Sharad Pawar at the NCP supremo’s residence,” sources told.

Marnus Labuschagne was recently questioned on social media about the best Indian batter and bowler he had faced so far and he had no doubts about picking Virat Kohli and R Ashwin as his answer. The right-hander is currently playing a massive role for the Australian side in the ongoing Ashes Test series and his numbers in the format have been amazingly good.

The 2019-2020 home series was the first challenge for Labuschagne against the Indian Test side and he straightaway proved to be one of the vital cogs in the Aussie batting lineup. Kohli could play just the one Test in the series after returning home for his child’s birth while Ashwin played the first three Tests. India scripted a historic 2-1 series victory under the captaincy of Ajin

Kolkata Knight Riders mock MS Dhoni on Twitter and More News

Test cricket of the highest quality was on display in the recently-concluded fourth Ashes Test between Australia and England. The visitors had a stern task of chasing 358 on Day 5 at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Although England had all 10 wickets in hand, their victory never seemed on the cards. Owing to the same, they played for a draw and eventually avoided a narrow defeat.

Notably, the Three Lions had lost nine wickets and were on the brink of another defeat. However, that didn’t happen as veteran pacers James Anderson and Stuart Broad managed to survive the final two overs. As it got dark at SCG in the evening time, Australia could only operate with spinners. Hence, Nathan Lyon and Steve Smith were in action in the last few overs.

Now, such field settings are rare but fans have witnessed such scenes in Test matches before. However, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), after the conclusion of the game, recalled the moment when their former captain Gautam Gambhir set such a field in an Indian Premier League (IPL) match. “That moment when a classic move in Test cricket actually reminds you of a T20 master stroke!” wrote KKR while sharing an image of that clash on Facebook.

England batted valiantly on Day 5 of the fourth Ashes Test and managed a draw. It was indeed a fascinating contest as Australia were cruising towards another emphatic win. However, veteran pacers James Anderson and Stuart Broad survived the last two overs as the hosts couldn’t take the last wicket. As the visitors suffered humiliating defeats in the previous three games, they would be pretty pleased with the drawn result.

However, England suffered a major blow in the game as wicketkeeper-batter Jos Buttler won’t be available for the final Ashes Test, which gets underway in Hobart next week. The same was confirmed by England skipper Joe Root in the post-match press conference. Notably, Buttler sustained a finger injury while keeping in Australia’s first innings. Although

Favourite IPL team? | Favourite Wicketkeeper-batter? | Free Hit with Smit Patel

Representing the nation in any sport is a dream for all the players. However, the journey to make it to the national side isn’t a cakewalk. With the high level of competition, not everyone is able to crack the code of playing for the nation.

Despite the heroics in the Under-19 cricket, some players couldn’t make it to the highest level owing to immense competition in India. Thus, one has heard of a few players who have shifted elsewhere to play cricket. Smit Patel is one such name that comes to the fore in this scenario. Smit Patel’s career has witnessed a lot of uncertainties.

Patel exuded his flair in 2012 Under-19 World Cup to fashion India’s victory in the final. However, as Parthiv Patel remained the first choice keeper-batter of the Gujarat side, Smit had to stay in the reserves for quite a period of time. He thus featured for Tripura, Goa, and Baroda in the Ranji Trophy in search of more opportunities.

Smit Patel who is still young and has a long way ahead of him, took the decision to shift to the USA to play cricket there. He ended his stint with Indian cricket after having scored 3278 first-class runs in 55 games at an average of 39.49. This includes 11 centuries and 14 half-centuries. He also played in 43 List A matches and 28 T20s, scoring 1234 and 708 runs, in the two formats respectively.

In an exclusive interview with CricTracker, Smit Patel spoke about his call to shift to the USA, revealed his favorite IPL franchise and a lot of other aspects.

ICC's New T20I Rules - All You Need To Know About The New Rule Changes In T20I Cricket

An in-match penalty for slow over rates in men’s and women’s Twenty20 Internationals comes into effect this month, with the updated playing conditions also providing for an optional drinks interval midway through the innings in bilateral T20 international cricket.

The over rate regulations are captured in clause 13.8 of the playing conditions (here), which stipulate that a fielding side must be in position to bowl the first ball of the final over of the innings by the scheduled or rescheduled time for the end of the innings. If they are not in such a position, one fewer fielder will be permitted outside of the 30-yard circle for the remaining overs of the innings.

The change was recommended by the ICC Cricket Committee, which regularly discusses ways to improve the pace of play in all formats, after considering reports on the effectiveness of a similar regulation that was included in the playing conditions for the Hundred competition conducted by the ECB.

The in-match penalties are in addition to the sanctions for slow over rate outlined in Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel.

In another change, an optional drinks break of two minutes and thirty seconds may be taken at the mid-point of each innings subject to agreement between Members at the start of each series.

The first men’s match to be played under the new playing conditions will be the one-off tie between the West Indies and Ireland at the Sabina Park in Jamaica on 16 January while the first T20I of the three-match series between South Africa and the West Indies in Centurion on 18 January will be the first women’s match played under the new playing conditions.

Cheteshwar Pujara Gives Update On Kohli's Fitness And More News

Team India Test skipper Virat Kohli missed the second Test against South Africa after he sustained a back spasm prior to the game at The Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg. It was a massive development since the now 33-year-old Kohli was India’s leading run-scorer during the tour of South Africa back in 2018.

KL Rahul, in the meantime, stood in for Virat in the second game of the ongoing red-ball series. Right-handed batter Hanuma Vihari replaced the Delhi-born Kohli in the playing eleven for the crucial encounter. Indian middle-order batter, Cheteshwar Pujara, in the meantime, shared an update on Kohli’s fitness.

“Officially, I can’t say much but yes, he is definitely getting better and I feel that he will be fit soon. The physio can answer this better and I am sure an update will come from the BCCI very soon,” Pujara was quoted as saying to the reporters on Wednesday, January 5.

Prior to the game that started on January 3, the Board of Control for Cricket inn India released a statement, updating on Kohli’s availability for the second Test. Going by their statement, Kohli was under the observation of BCCI’s medical staff.

“Team India captain Mr Virat Kohli had a spasm on his upper back this morning. He won’t feature in the second Test against South Africa at The Wanderers. The BCCI medical team will be monitoring him during the course of this Test match.

“KL Rahul will captain the side in his absence. The All-India Senior Selection Committee has named Jasprit Bumrah as vice-captain for the 2nd Test,” the BCCI had said in its statement.

Rahul, during the toss, also talked about Kohli’s absence from the game, but also said that he’s likely to recover for the final game of the three-match series.

“Unfortunately, Virat has had an upper back spasm, the physios are working on him and hopefully he’ll recover for the next Test,” Rahul had said.
