Cricket on ICE

Cricket lovers will taste a unique flavour this weekend when the legends of the game will clash in the Swiss Alps at the rooftop of the world, St Moritz. Cometh the February 8th and 9th, the world will spectate the ICE Cricket challenge where international stars as Virender Sehwag, Shoaib Akhtar, Lasith Malinga will play two T-20 matches on ice.
Though St. Moritz is famous for being the cradle of winter sports and winter olympics, this is not the first instance of cricket being played here. Since 1988, the St. Moritz frozen lake has seen the cricket tournament every year.
If you are wondering how a cricket game is possible on a lake? This lake freezes over a time of 6 months and then gets covered by soft falling snow. This enables the frozen lake to withstand upto 200 tonnes of weight. Not only can the players play here easily but also a pavilion and grandstands be constructed.
An artificial turf pitch will be laid on the snow field. Players will use the traditional cricketing gear and the red ball but will have to wear pimpled sports shoes instead of spikes.
During the day, the weather is bright and sunny but at night the temperatures can dip to as low as -20 Degree C at night.
Some of the cricketing greats who will take part in the tournament include Shahid Afridi, Graeme Smith, Jacques Kallis, Daniel Vettori, Nathan Mccullum, Grant Elliot, Owais Shah and Monty Panesar. Virender Sehwag and Shahid Afridi will lead their respective sides. The matches will begin at 3:30 PM IST. Live action can be caught on Cricnwin app & Sony Six.
