  • Startups continuing Layoffs amid funding winter

Startups continuing Layoffs amid funding winter

Founders are acutely aware of the slowdown in deal-making, and ‘expanding the runway’ is the mantra they are following to tide over the next quarters. So, startups are on the drawing board to implement those measures. Going back which will help them survive for the next 24 months.

Among companies to end layoffs in 2023, Google-backed Mohalla Tech Pvt Ltd, which runs social media site #ShareChat and short video platform Moj, topped the list with nearly 600 layoffs. It states that external macro factors affect the cost and availability of capital.

The Bengaluru-based company cut its workforce by around 20% in the latest round. Mohalla Tech also laid off its fantasy sports vertical Jeet11, which laid off around 115 employees in December.

Another Google-backed startup that laid off its employees in early 2023 is Dunzo. The instant commerce firm laid off 3% or about 90 employees as part of its restructuring. Product and supply chain employees were the most affected. “Some senior developers and at least two directors of engineering have been dismissed,” said a person with knowledge of Dunzo’s development.

The challenge of this “winner-takes-all” model in the corporate world is that the competition has to be decimated with whatever means necessary, the ultimate objective for the winner is a monopoly (the only buyer) and a monopsony (the only seller). There is no room for a second or third player in this model.

The “winner-takes-all” model requires an enormous amount of funding – business fundamentals such as profits or even revenue are not important. The model’s assumption is that equity can fund losses; revenues are not important until such time that there is only one player standing.

Food delivery major Swiggy reportedly plans to fire around 8-10% of its workforce, or 480-600 employees, to reduce costs amid the ongoing funding winter. The layoff at Swiggy will impact its product, engineering and operations teams, Fina

  • Cyber Espionage

    Cyber Espionage

#Cybersecurity has been a major concern. Cyber espionage is now becoming more sophisticated and widespread both on the international and domestic stages. #Hackers, especially those backed by the Chinese government, are making all efforts to breach top global telecom firms.

Hello and welcome to VARINDIA news hour

Cyber espionage is a form of #cyberattack that steals sensitive data or intellectual property to gain an advantage over a competitive company or government entity. The cyber-espionage campaign lasts at least two years. The campaign’s success shows how dangerous software faults can be, even years after they’ve been identified and made public.

As per US Cyber Advisory, there is a very large size of espionage attack by the Chinese government-backed hackers who have broken into a number of major telecom businesses throughout the world by exploiting known software flaws in routers and other popular networking gear.

The Chinese hackers allegedly exploited networking devices from key vendors such as Cisco, Citrix, Zyxel, QNAP, DrayTek, MikroTik, D-Link, and Netgear in the recently disclosed cyber assault.

The US officials said that the hackers utilised the stolen devices to acquire full access to the network traffic of several private companies and government agencies once they had a foothold within their targets. However, the advisory did not list the identities of persons who were impacted by the campaign, nor did it describe the campaign’s impact. But the US authorities did point out the specific networking devices, such as routers and switches, that Chinese hackers are suspected of routinely targeting, exploiting severe and well-known flaws that basically gave the attackers free reign over their targets.

All of the flaws were in public knowledge, including a five-year-old severe hole in Netgear routers that let attackers circumvent authentication checks and execute any code they want, giving them complete co

  • Linux Malware Saw 35% Growth During 2021

Linux Malware Saw 35% Growth During 2021

#Linux is similar to other operating systems such as Windows, and OS X. Like other operating systems, Linux has a graphical user interface, as well as comparable versions of software commonly used on other operating systems. Its uses are as diverse as any other OS, making Linux a favored platform for use in certain areas such as web serving, networking, and databases. The number of malware infections targeting Linux devices rose by 35% in 2021, most commonly to recruit IoT devices for #DDoS (distributed denial of service) attacks. IoTs are typically under-powered "smart" devices running various Linux distributions and are limited to specific functionality. However, when their resources are combined into large groups, they can deliver massive DDoS attacks to even well-protected infrastructure. Besides DDoS, Linux IoT devices are recruited to mine #cryptocurrency, facilitate spam mail campaigns, serve as relays, act as command-and-control servers, or even act as entry points into corporate networks The most prevalent Linux-based malware families in 2021 were XorDDoS, Mirai and Mozi, which collectively accounted for 22% of all Linux-based IoT malware that year. These were also a main driver of malware targeting all Linux-based systems, which grew 35% in 2021 compared with 2020.

A notable case of the malware's distribution was shown in 2021 after a Chinese threat actor known as "Winnti" was observed deploying it with other derivative botnets. The malware called Mirai turned thousands of vulnerable Linux-based routers, IP cameras and other IoT devices into a botnet that targeted Dyn and others with a massive DDoS attack. Whereas, Mozi is a P2P botnet relying on the distributed hash table (DHT) lookup system to hide suspicious C2 communications from network traffic monitoring solutions. People often say that hackers don't generally target linux users because linux OS only takes up about 5% of the market whereas macOS takes 25% and wi

Cryptocurrency volume & value will increase in the future

The cryptocurrency market in India, presently, stands at $15 billion, and the volume and value will only increase in the future. Anticipating a dramatic rise in crypto investments in the country, stakeholders in the industry began voicing their support for a robust, accessible, and clear framework on the regulation of cryptocurrency in the country. The Cryptocurrency and Regulation of Official Digital Currency Bill, 2021, to be introduced in the Lok Sabha soon, aims to prohibit all private cryptocurrencies in India while seeking to create a facilitative framework for adopting a central bank digital currency (CBDC). The Bill is likely to classify mining, generating, holding, selling, or dealing in private digital currencies as a cognisable offense. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that emerging technologies such as cryptocurrencies should be used to empower democracy, not undermine it. Reports suggest that the government may introduce stringent regulations in line with the 2021 Financial Action Task Force (FATF) guidance for cryptocurrencies held as assets by imposing investment ceilings, stringent disclosure norms, and levying taxes on gains earned from such assets. In less than 10 years, Bitcoin has increased over 227,000% in value. When it first launched, a 22-dollar investment would now be a million dollars today. That's how people have become billionaires through Bitcoin!

In November 2021, the global cryptocurrency market, constituting more than 6,000 cryptocurrencies, touched a market capitalization of $3 trillion. There has been a sudden flurry of cryptocurrency trading platforms in India over the past year. Latest industry estimates suggest that cryptocurrencies holdings of nearly 20 million investors amount to approximately ₹400 billion in India, suggesting that the country is emerging as the new frontier for the nume

Open Banking & Open Finance - Future payment system

The push from open banking towards the more encompassing approach of open finance is being driven by several elements, from consumer pressure to regulatory obligations to greater awareness around privacy concerns. However, there is by no means a unanimous approach to open banking, and certain players believe that we are at different stages of completion on the open banking roadmap. Over the last decade we have seen that regulatory requirements are increasing, especially in the areas of privacy, payment services, and financial reporting. A more agile, nimble, proactive approach by regulators has been seen against this backdrop, does this equate to innovative supervision, or simply more regulations? However, the Covid-19 pandemic has increased the perceived importance of having 24/7 online access, frictionless mobile payments, and ensuring fully remote access to banking services.

It is clear that policymakers and regulators are well aware of the negative effects of having too much red tape, country-specific interpretations of regulation and different regulatory treatment of seemingly identical financial services. We have also witnessed recent efforts aimed at solving this issue, which build greater clarity across complex financial regulatory frameworks, and address new digital-specific issues as they emerge - the Digital Markets Act is a good example of this. There are corporates who are looking for technology - especially open banking and APIs - to assist with their digital transformation. They are also seeking banking partners that are focused on innovation and can assist with the transformation journey.
