The term "Funding Winter" refers to a period in which funding for start-ups becomes more difficult to obtain due to a variety of factors, including economic conditions, market trends, and investor sentiment.
Funding Winter has brought a significant impact on the growth and development of start-ups, particularly those in emerging markets like India. We are witnessing – employee layoffs, investors delaying capital infusion decisions, lower spends by start-ups in marketing, some start-ups getting valued lower than their previous funding rounds, etc. – resulting in drying up of capital flows or “Funding Winter”.
This has been a global phenomenon throughout 2022 and is expected to have an extended run in 2023 as well. Prior to funding winter, globally many startups were able to raise funds at increasingly higher valuations with relative ease. India being the third largest startup ecosystem in the world, these trends are reflected in the capital flows to Indian startups as well. The romance of ransomware attacks with local self-governing bodies is not new. When WannaCry had been declared dead and gone for long, it resurfaced in quite a few municipalities in the US in 2019 and some of them ended up paying ransom. Now, the similar story seems to be getting re-enacted, this time its Canada. With the recent attack on 22ndJuly, a post on LockBit’s dark web site listed townofstmarys.com as a victim of the ransomware and previewed files that had been stolen and encrypted. All it seems that, #ransomware IS REDEFINING CRIME.
The Canadian town of St. Marys, Ontario, has been hit by a ransomware attack that has locked staff out of internal systems and encrypted data. The small town of around 7,500 residents seems to be the latest target of the notorious LockBit ransomware group. The notorious ransomware gang locked the internal servers and encrypted the data of St. Marys, a town in southwestern Ontario.
#Cyberattackers who launch these malwares demand a ransom from the victims in order to not compromise their data. The town’s Mayor Al Strathdee said. “We have a skilled and knowledgeable team of Town staff, cyber security experts and legal counsel working around the clock to resolve any issues related to this incident,”
The threat becomes significant as not only individuals but private or government organizations, businesses or even entire towns and cities can get under attack and lose control over their data.
Critical municipal services such as fire, police, transit, and water/wastewater systems were unaffected by the incident and are operating as usual. The visitors of St Mary’s website are greeted with a message saying the town is investigating a cyber security incident that locked an internal server and encrypted the data. The LockBit cartel gave the town a deadline to pay the ransom or have their data published online.

Growing acceptance of TikTok is going to give stiff competition to YouTube by 2024. The Chinese-owned video platform is set to overtake the advertising scale of Twitter and Snapchat combined, despite TikTok being launched globally 12 years after its Google-owned rival. TikTok, which was banned in India in June 2020 along with several Chinese apps in the first lot, is likely to triple its global worldwide ad revenues $11.6 billion this year -- more than $10.44 billion for Snapchat and Twitter combined. The forecast is going to catch up with YouTube by 2024 when both are predicted to take $23.6bn in ad revenue, reports The Guardian. In 2021, social video app TikTok had approximately 78.7 million users in the United States. This figure is projected to increase by around eight percent year-over-year, reaching 84.9 million users in 2022. TikTok is one of the fastest-growing social media apps in the United States and especially popular with younger digital audiences. Meanwhile, TikTok emerged as the top grossing non-game app in Q1 2022, generating $821 million in consumer spending in the quarter. On Google Play, it came second to Google One, which topped the chart with nearly $250 million, according to Sensor Tower. A Washington Post report late last month claimed that Meta allegedly paid a prominent Republican consulting firm to malign TikTok. According to the report, Meta ran a nationwide campaign to sow distrust about one of the company's top competitors, TikTok.

Organizations are increasing investment and exploration in quantum technologies with expectations of first commercial applications in 3-5 years, as per Capgemini Research report. The report identifies 23% of organizations globally are currently working on or planning to use quantum technologies, moving from scientific research into real-world solutions. Furthermore, 20% of organizations are expecting to increase investments in technology in the next year. It further says, China (43%) and the Netherlands (42%) have the largest share of companies working on or planning to work on quantum technologies, well ahead of Germany and the UK (each on 26%), versus 23% on average globally. These companies intend to leverage the tech in a number of ways, from improving sustainability in operations, and discovery of new materials for battery manufacture, to securing information, through medical sensors and mitigating harmful industrial gases. Financial services organizations are using quantum technologies for more accurate pricing of risky assets, optimizing portfolios for better returns, and detecting frauds. In addition, Life Sciences companies are attempting to shorten the drug-development cycle using quantum computing.
The Quantum technologies have reached different levels of maturity in terms of expected applications such as:
1. Quantum computing has the highest potential of all quantum domains but it is also the least mature. The pace of development has accelerated, driven by investor interest, expanding use cases and technology breakthroughs. The growing concern on the Semiconductor chip shortages have been aggravated by the pandemic. Manufacturing companies are increasing chip production – but the shortfall won't be resolved immediately. With the rising popularity of chiplets in semiconductors, market leaders in packaging, IP suppliers, foundries, and cloud service providers have joined forces to launch the Universal Chiplet Interconnect Express (UCIe) standard to establish an open ecosystem for future technologies. Industry leaders joining the initiative already include the likes of AMD, Intel, Meta, Microsoft, Google, TSMC, Samsung, Arm, and Qualcomm, whereas Nvidia is notably absent from the grouping, despite exploring a chiplet path for its next-generation GPU designs. The UCIe 1.0 specification is a complete standardized die-to-die interconnect, encompassing a physical layer, protocol stack, software model, and compliance testing, a consortium said. It natively maps PCI Express (PCIe) and Compute Express Link (CXL) protocols. The spec will enable end users to mix and match dies and other chiplet components from multiple sources with different packaging options.
According to Gordon Moore, the number of transistors in an integrated circuit doubles every two years (i.e., Moore's Law). However, maintaining this while using a monolithic design has gradually become more challenging, leading companies like AMD and Intel to use chiplet systems within their products. However, as chiplets become the new norm for CPUs and GPUs, developing an industry-wide standard would greatly help the industry, as manufacturing partners could use components from different ecosystems and still create an SoC with them. Digital Twins helping the Circular Economy
Digital twin refers to a digital replica of physical assets (physical twin), processes and systems that can be used for various purposes. The digital representation provides both the elements and the dynamics of how an Internet of things device operates and lives throughout its life cycle. The ABI Research forecasts that the world economy will achieve over 10.5% circularity by 2030, as sustainability and incoming legislation start to take effect where Digital Twins play a key role. The circular economy is a key sustainability strategy being adopted by world and industry leaders in the fight against climate change and though still in its infancy in terms of data and metrics. It is a growing phenomenon and tech industries, such as IoT for asset tracking, are set to grow rapidly in the next five years. Circularity concepts such as remanufacturing, reuse, and the sharing economy will be critically enabled by smart cities technologies such as IoT, AI and Digital Twins.” Furthermore, many different tech companies are engaging in circular concepts such as Cityzenith’s Digital Twin platform SmartWorldOS, which helps companies design out waste in their projects.
With around 70% of people expected to be living in cities by 2050 it is essential that urban infrastructure can support this population volume and density, so ‘smart cities’ and their technologies will be essential to the circular economy. Secondly, many current smart city technologies already support a circular economy such as the sharing economy, smart lighting, and green infrastructure. “However, these technologies need to adopt circular practices from cradle-to-grave to make full use of the opportunities brought by the circular economy,” ABI Research’s Lindsey Vest concludes.
