Former India batter Wasim Jaffer has said that it would have been more sensible to make Cheteshwar Pujara the stand-in captain of India for the rescheduled fifth and final Test match at Edgbaston starting Friday, July 1. Jaffer’s remarks came after pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah was named the skipper at the very last moment as Rohit Sharma was ruled out due to COVID-19.
Justifying his opinion on why Pujara should have led India in this Test match, the multiple-time Ranji Trophy winner said that the former has the experience of leading in first-class cricket and is a ‘decent enough’ leader. At the same time, Jaffer also mentioned that the Saurashtra cricketer has already played 95 Test matches for India which according to him was enough for Pujara to get the role.

Team India Test skipper Virat Kohli missed the second Test against South Africa after he sustained a back spasm prior to the game at The Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg. It was a massive development since the now 33-year-old Kohli was India’s leading run-scorer during the tour of South Africa back in 2018.
KL Rahul, in the meantime, stood in for Virat in the second game of the ongoing red-ball series. Right-handed batter Hanuma Vihari replaced the Delhi-born Kohli in the playing eleven for the crucial encounter. Indian middle-order batter, Cheteshwar Pujara, in the meantime, shared an update on Kohli’s fitness.
“Officially, I can’t say much but yes, he is definitely getting better and I feel that he will be fit soon. The physio can answer this better and I am sure an update will come from the BCCI very soon,” Pujara was quoted as saying to the reporters on Wednesday, January 5.
Prior to the game that started on January 3, the Board of Control for Cricket inn India released a statement, updating on Kohli’s availability for the second Test. Going by their statement, Kohli was under the observation of BCCI’s medical staff.
“Team India captain Mr Virat Kohli had a spasm on his upper back this morning. He won’t feature in the second Test against South Africa at The Wanderers. The BCCI medical team will be monitoring him during the course of this Test match.
“KL Rahul will captain the side in his absence. The All-India Senior Selection Committee has named Jasprit Bumrah as vice-captain for the 2nd Test,” the BCCI had said in its statement.
Rahul, during the toss, also talked about Kohli’s absence from the game, but also said that he’s likely to recover for the final game of the three-match series.
“Unfortunately, Virat has had an upper back spasm, the physios are working on him and hopefully he’ll recover for the next Test,” Rahul had said.

“It’s the right way to go. This could be a blessing in disguise for Virat and Rohit. For one guy to handle all three formats is not easy at all in this time of living in and out of bio-bubbles because of Covid.
“Virat can focus on red-ball cricket and lead for as long as he wants to lead in Tests. It will allow him to sit back and think on his game because he’s got a good 5-6 years left in him,” Shastri said.
Earlier this week, Shastri had also said that Sourav Ganguly, BCCI’s president, should come out to give his side of the story, after Kohli’s claims during his press conference. He also mentioned that both parties could have settled this matter with better communication.
“Virat has given his side of the story, it needs the board president to give his side of the story. With good communication, the situation could have been handled better,” Shastri had said.

As per reports, two senior batters of team India called up BCCI secretary Jay Shah expressing their opinions on Kohli’s captaincy. The two players in question are supposedly Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara.
Both the batters were placed under major scrutiny for their performances against New Zealand in the high-profile match. Speaking on opening the batting in Test cricket, Rohit said that it was a big risk he took two years ago. The veteran mentioned that he was at a ‘make-or-break’ stage in his Test career.
