Criminals are using a simple tactic to send malicious links, and it's working. They are embedding malicious links in images in emails. When the recipient opens the email, the image loads and the malicious link gets activated. It is a straightforward tactics to try and direct victims to phishing links - but the bad news is that it appears to be working. This can lead to malware infection, data theft, or other problems.
Usually, hackers would draft elaborate email trying to convince the victims to click on a link found at the bottom of the message. These emails would either tell the recipients they urgently needed to download an antivirus or cancel a pending transaction that will leave them broken, or something similar.

Hacking forums are full of tools built by criminals using OpenAI’s ChatGPT chatbot. A report says, cybercriminals are using ChatGPT to develop malicious tools. In underground hacking forums, threat actors are creating infostealers, encryption tools and facilitating fraud activity. Check Point Research warns of the fast-growing interest in ChatGPT by cybercriminals and shares three recent cases, with screenshots, of the development and sharing of malicious tools using ChatGPT.
On December 29, 2022, a thread named “ChatGPT - Benefits of Malware” appeared on a popular underground hacking forum. The publisher of the thread disclosed that he was experimenting with ChatGPT to recreate malware strains and techniques described in research publications and write-ups about common malware.
Secondly, on December 21, 2022, a threat actor dubbed USDoD posted a Python script, which he emphasized was the ‘first script he ever created’. When another cybercriminal commented that the style of the code resembles openAI code, USDoD confirmed that OpenAI gave him a “nice helping hand to finish the script with a nice scope.”
Blockchain technology and decentralized applications (dAPPs) provide users with a number of advantages. For example, users can utilize the service without creating an account and it can be implemented as a single-page application written in JavaScript. Ever Surf is a cross-platform messenger, a blockchain browser, and a crypto wallet for Everscale blockchain. It is written in React Native and is available in Google Play Market and Apple Store. There is also a web version of Ever Surf that runs on any platform. This type of application does not require communication with a centralized infrastructure, such as a web server, and it can interact with the blockchain directly or by using a browser extension like Metamask. In this case, the user is identified using keys that are stored only on a local machine inside a browser extension or a web wallet. If a decentralized application or a wallet stores sensitive data locally, it must ensure this data is reliably protected. In most cases, dAPPs run inside the browser and therefore may be vulnerable to attacks such as XSS. This research describes the vulnerability found in the web version of Ever Surf, a wallet for the Everscale blockchain (formerly Free TON). By exploiting the vulnerability, it’s possible to decrypt the private keys and seed phrases that are stored in the browser’s local storage. In other words, attackers could gain full control over the victim's wallets. The Checkpoint Research (CPR) disclosed the vulnerability to Ever Surf developers who then released a desktop version that mitigates this vulnerability.
The web version is now declared deprecated and should only be used for development purposes. Seed phrases from accounts that store real value in crypto should not be used in the web version of Ever Surf. While the regulations on Bitcoin in India is not yet clear, the Supreme Court asked the central government to make its stand clear on the cryptocurrencies, however, the investment into cryptocurrency is skyrocketing. A recent report says, India has ranked 21st with realized gains of around $1.85 billion. The central government is preparing a Bill to regulate cryptocurrency and other digital assets in India. Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman in the Union Budget 2022 announced that the central government will levy a steep tax at 30% on virtual assets including cryptocurrencies and Nonfungible tokens. For this crypto tax, Budget 2022 proposed to introduce a new section 115BBH to levy income tax on cryptocurrencies and other virtual assets. The newly proposed cryptocurrency tax will be applicable from Assessment Year 2023-24. That means all your income from crypto transactions in FY 2022-23 will be taxed at the rate of 30%. Investors have to pay tax according to the existing taxation rules for FY 2021-22. Blockchain data analytics firm Chainalysis has found that the total cryptocurrency gains worldwide amounted to $163 billion in 2021, which was 5x the previous year or a 400% increase. Investors around the world realized total gains of $162.7 billion in 2021, compared to just $32.5 billion in 2020.
According to Chainalysis, the United States lead by a wide margin at an estimated $47 billion in realized cryptocurrency gains, followed by the UK, Germany, Japan, and China. Meanwhile, India ranked a lowly 21st with realized gains of around $1.85 billion. The report highlights that Ethereum edged out Bitcoin in total realized gains globally at $76.3 billion to $74.7 billion. Bitcoin, the world's most traded cryptocurrency, leapt 60% to finish 2021 at about $46,300.
