As #cloudadoption and expansion continues, organisations need to adopt a platform approach that secures applications from code to cloud across multi-cloud environments.
There are a number of reasons why organizations may struggle to detect and respond to cyberthreats quickly. These may include a lack of resources, limited cybersecurity expertise, and inadequate or outdated technology. In addition, many organizations may not have effective incident response plans in place, which can delay their ability to respond to an attack.
The Palo Alto Networks report said a large majority (78 percent) of organisations said they have distributed responsibility for cloud security to individual teams, but almost half (47 percent) said a majority of their workforce does not understand their security responsibilities.
The report revealed that the expansion of hybrid work during the pandemic drove organisations to expand their use of clouds by more than 25 percent. As a result, DevOps teams are being pressed to deliver production code at warp speed — making application security more complex, and putting pressure on security organizations to keep pace.

As per Gartner by 2025, 99% of cloud security issues will be a result of human error when configuring assets and security in the cloud. At a time when organizations are becoming increasingly dependent on third-party cloud vendors such as AWS, Microsoft Azure, IBM and Google Cloud Platform to securely manage their data, concerns around misconfigurations and other vulnerabilities in the cloud are likely to amplify quickly. Under the shared responsibility model - a security framework designed to ensure accountability for compromised data and other incidents - the cloud provider will offer basic cloud security, but it's up to businesses themselves to secure their own data within the cloud. To put it in another way, if cloud providers ensure the town gates are locked and the perimeter is well guarded, it’s still up to businesses to ensure their own doors are locked. Cloud security is a shared Responsibility
Cloud security is all about how to secure data, applications and infrastructure intrinsic to the use of cloud computing, including policies, technologies and controls. With this the organisation can improve operational agility and reduce costs, organizations are increasingly distributing cloud-based applications and their data among varying environments. These environments include private clouds, hybrid or dedicated public clouds, and software-as-a -service (SaaS) applications, each bringing unique agility benefits and security issues. There is growing concerns over data exposure have made cloud security a priority. The challenge lies in balancing an organization’s need for agility with the need to improve the security of applications as well as that of data as it moves between various clouds.
Cloud service providers adhere to a shared security responsibility model, which means your security team maintains some responsibilities for security as you move applications, data, containers, and workloads to the cloud, while the provider takes some responsibility, but not all. A number of different teams within an organization could be responsible for cloud security, those includes, the network team, security team, apps team, compliance team or the infrastructure team. As organizations transition from private clouds to public clouds or SaaS applications, they may rely on their vendors to secure the data, apps and infrastructure. However, whatever platform security measures are used, the organization still maintains responsibility for the security of its own data.

Cybersecurity is the barrier to cloud adoption
Cloud security continues to be a significant concern for cybersecurity professionals as 96% are moderately concerned and 32% are extremely concerned.A Cloud Security Report survey conducted by Security Insiders found that cloud security concerns among cybersecurity professionals remains high as the adoption of public cloud computing continues to surge in the wake of the pandemic and the resulting massive shift to remote work. Organizations continue to rapidly migrate workloads from data centres to the cloud, and the trend has been accelerating during the recent Covid pandemic. The report indicates that 33% of organizations are running more than half of their workloads in the cloud today, and that number is set to rise to 56% in the next 12–18 months.
At the same time, the Multi-cloud adoption is very much the norm as organizations were found to be operating in an expanded and diverse digital landscape. 71% of organizations are pursuing a hybrid or multi-cloud strategy as cloud is the preferred choice for integration of multiple services, scalability, or business continuity reasons. 76% of organizations are using two or more cloud providers and hybrid still accounts for more than one-third of the deployments. Among the key barriers to faster cloud adoption, survey participants mentioned lack of visibility (53%), lack of control (46%), lack of staff resources or expertise (39%), and high cost (35%) as the most significant negative factors. However, misconfiguration of cloud security remains the biggest security risk according to 67% of cybersecurity professionals in the survey.
