Satellite Broadband services in India
Satellite Communication has become widespread and ubiquitous throughout the country for diverse applications catering to the sectors which are irreplaceable in serving the nation's interest. Satellite internet is a broadband internet service that uses radio waves to transmit the internet from an ISP hub to your satellite receiver dish which is attached with a modem to provide internet access. Some like SpaceX use lasers instead of radio waves to transmit the data. The radio waves are reflected in the receiver by geosynchronous low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites that are in a fixed position in the sky. The data is transmitted to the satellite. Satellite internet could be the next big step in internet connectivity. Once a fleet of satellites is in orbit, companies would only need to set up the satellite receiver and modem to provide access to the internet from almost any corner of the world. There is no need for cables or other ground-based infrastructure at the customer’s access point. It would stand to revolutionise internet access the same way that the satellite DTH broadcasting services did for television access in India.
India is at the cusp of being a global hub for increased use of satellite communication, which can attract billions of dollars as FDI, generate huge employment, and enhance the GDP growth. About $40 billion private investments have already come in from major satellite broadband companies like Elon Musk’s SpaceX, Amazon’s Kuiper Project and the Bharti Airtel-backed OneWeb and Hughes are competing to become the biggest names in satellite internet in India. For a country like India, where providers would otherwise need to cover vast grounds with ground-based infrastructure, satellite internet provides an easy way to provide internet access to rural areas. Indian telecom industry facing headwinds
The telecom industry had been facing headwinds since the launch of services by Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited (RJIL) which manifested into decline in revenue and profit generation. Further, the Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR) penalty added to the woes of the industry and has kept the debt levels elevated. Owing to these reasons, the financial position of Vodafone Idea Limited (VIL) has been deteriorating due to mounting losses and increasing debt levels. As per an ICRA note, this stress on VIL is likely to impact financial as well as other stakeholders and can impact the industry structure. It has been observed that as VIL owes Rs 23,400 crore to lenders and Rs 1,68,190 crore to government towards spectrum and AGR deferred dues as on June 30, 2021. Over the last 12 quarters starting Q2FY2019, VIL has been reporting sizable losses.
Further, with the addition of AGR liabilities, the debt has burgeoned to more than Rs 2 lakh crore as on June 30, 2021 (including lease liabilities). This, along with churn in the subscriber base, mostly stagnant 4G user base, and pressure on ARPU levels have kept the revenue and profit generation muted. As per ICRA, the most effective relief can come in the form of extension of moratorium on spectrum dues beyond FY2022, a move that could result in deferment of dues payable in FY2023 to the tune of Rs 32,000 crore for the industry, of which Rs 16,000 crore are VIL's. Moreover, reduction in the levies paid by telcos, namely license fee and spectrum usage charges can also lift the EBITDA. An estimation states, one per cent reduction in levies leads to annual saving of Rs 1,600 crore for the industry. VIL occupies 35% tenancy share and 36% revenue share. Today aluminum is the most used metal in the world after iron. Bauxite is the only ore of aluminium. Bauxite deposits of Orissa are of diverse parentage. Bauxite is the ore from which aluminium is produced. Aluminium is a critical for all the key sectors it’ll help in achieving ambitious growth plan of India, with the vision of a $5 trillion economy. The government has been announcing Production Linked Incentives (PLI) across sectors. Many sectors need aluminium as a raw material which will continue to be sourced through imports rather than local production unless these anomalies are urgently fixed. As India on the world map as a global aluminium hub, despite possessing one of the world’s largest deposits, the possible key to fast-track India’s development is being ignored as bauxite mining is yet to be prioritised.
This is critically required for proposed infrastructure development, power transmission, manufacturing, transport and defence. Further, aluminium is a critical metal, essentially required for achieving low-carbon footprint and renewable energy generation.
