With the COVID-19 pandemic at its peak in India, there are enough doubts over the 2022 Indian Premier League (IPL) taking place in the country. Hence, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has kept a contingency plan in place in case the T20 tournament has to be shifted out of India.
Even as in 2020, the entire IPL took place in the United Arab Emirates, in 2021, the championship had to be partially moved out of India after emergence of COVID-19 cases in the team camps. But for the upcoming edition, the world’s richest cricket board isn’t completely dependent on the UAE.
If reports are to be believed, as a part of Plan B, the BCCI has kept South Africa and Sri Lanka as backup hosts. Back in 2009, South Africa hosted the IPL, although due to completely different reasons. Lanka is yet to host the IPL as of now.
“We can’t be dependent on UAE all the time so we decided to explore more options, South Africa’s time difference also works out well for the players,” a BCCI official was quoted as saying in the New Indian Express.
South Africa, of late, has hosted two series pretty successfully. Earlier, the three-match unofficial Tests between India A and South Africa A took place after which the senior teams locked horns.
“The place where the team was staying for the second Test is spread over several acres. There were walking tracks and even a pond on the property and that has made things easier for the players who for the last couple of years or so have been confined to their rooms on several overseas tours,” an official said.
The BCCI has had it fair share of travails of late in the wake of the pandemic. The upcoming edition of the Ranji Trophy had to be postponed indefinitely due to COVID-19 cases in the camps. The domestic U19 Cooch Behar Trophy had to be halted midway because of several positive cases.

Test cricket of the highest quality was on display in the recently-concluded fourth Ashes Test between Australia and England. The visitors had a stern task of chasing 358 on Day 5 at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Although England had all 10 wickets in hand, their victory never seemed on the cards. Owing to the same, they played for a draw and eventually avoided a narrow defeat.
Notably, the Three Lions had lost nine wickets and were on the brink of another defeat. However, that didn’t happen as veteran pacers James Anderson and Stuart Broad managed to survive the final two overs. England batted valiantly on Day 5 of the fourth Ashes Test and managed a draw. It was indeed a fascinating contest as Australia were cruising towards another emphatic win. As the visitors suffered humiliating defeats in the previous three games, they would be pretty pleased with the drawn result.

Pat Cummins decided not to participate in the second half of the 2021 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The Australian pacer was staying in the Maldives along with his other Aussie teammates after the first half of the IPL was suspended in May, and could leave for Australia only after 14 days.
And later, when the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced that the second leg of the IPL will be played in the UAE, Cummins announced that he will not participate in the tournament, and did not disclose any particular reason as well.
Meanwhile, the bowler revealed the batsmen who are the toughest to bowl against. In a question and answer session on his YouTube channel, the pacer listed the battles he enjoyed against several batsmen from around the world. “These are the best in the world and are the obvious ones as they don’t have any weaknesses. Each team has a couple of batters that are toughest to bowl to, but you want to face those challenges as it is most rewarding,” Cummins said.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) have roped in former Australia batter Matthew Hayden and former South Africa pacer Vernon Philander for the upcoming T20 World Cup, scheduled between October 17 to November 14 in the United Arab Emirates and Oman.
Hayden and Philander’s appointment come in the backdrop of recent resignations of Misbah-ul-Haq and Waqar Younis, who stepped down from their positions as head coach and bowling coach, respectively. While PCB announced Saqlain Mushtaq and Abdul Razzaq as the interim coaches of the national team for Pakistan’s upcoming home series against New Zealand, the board went ahead with foreign coaches for the multi-team tournament in the emirates.
England captain Joe Root and Ireland star Eimear Richardson have been voted winners of the ICC Player of the Month for August.
Root saw off competition from Jasprit Bumrah, the India pacer, and Pakistan speedster Shaheen Afridi to win the award following a stellar August for the England captain.
In the women’s award, Richardson saw off tough competition from teammate Gaby Lewis and Thailand’s Nattaya Boochatham.
England all-rounder Chris Woakes will be replaced by Australian pacer Ben Dwarshuis at the Delhi Capitals for 2021 IPL’s UAE leg, which commences on September 19. Being the captain of the England team is never easy. If it’s the Test side, the job is possibly more difficult. There’s a rich culture of loving Test cricket and the experience of doing well in the longest format. Unlike other countries, Test cricket is more important to England than any other format. At least that was the case until 2015.
But even with the success of the white-ball teams, Test cricket remains a thing of joy for the English fan. To lead the English Test side is possibly the biggest privilege a cricketer growing up in England can have. But there hasn’t been a more difficult time to lead the England Test team. Yet, he does that. He has done everything possible to stand up for this role.
Growing up in Yorkshire, he would have dreamt of playing for England. Being from a place that has produced batting maestros like Geoffrey Boycott and Michael Vaughan, the standards set for him were pretty high, to begin with. But he stood up to it. He learned the craft. When world cricket saw him for the first time at the U-19 World Cup 2010, everyone instantly knew something was special about him.
He made his debut in 2012 on England’s tour of India and started his career with an impressive 70-odd on a turning track in Nagpur. That knock helped England draw the match and take home a series from India for the first time in 28 years. It happened with possibly England’s best ever batting line-up. Alastair Cook, Kevin Pietersen, Ian Bell, Jonathan Trott, and England’s best ever wicket keeper-batter, Matt Prior. He was just the new kid on the block. Eight and half years later, he is all England has.
Since his debut, no one has played more Test matches than him. With time, England’s batting greats kept leaving one by one. In an era where the focus shifted to building a name for themselves in white-ball cricket, England somehow stopped producing batsmen who were capable of bossing Test cricket. Pujara’s form was one of the concerns for the management but with gritty 91 and 61 in the third and fourth Tests respectively, the right-handed batter, for the time being, has managed to silence his critics.
But his knock also had few interruptions as the medical team had to intervene when Pujara twisted his ankle. There was a delay in play for few minutes as his ankle was being heavily taped. But luckily for India, the batter was up and running and seemed in no pain whatsoever.
Cricketer-turned-expert Michael Vaughan, who closely watched the whole episode unfold, feels Pujara has many traits similar to former Pakistan batter Inzamam-ul-Haq. “From knowing Pujara a bit from his time at Yorkshire, he’s a bit like me and I wouldn’t say that fielding is high up on his list of priorities. It’ll be an injury in that ankle that if there’s any prospect of him taking a bit of time off the field, he will take it. There’s a few around who used to be like that, Inzamam is one who comes to mind,” Vaughan said on the BBC Test Match Special.
Back in 2019, Rohit Sharma’s Test career was in the doldrums after he failed to score runs in the middle-order following his debut in 2013. But after he was sent to open the batting against South Africa, his career in the longer format took a turn. Two years later, the 34-year-old Rohit has been able to translate his ODI and T20I form into Test cricket as well.
On Saturday, the Nagpur-born notched his maiden overseas Test ton after he scored 127 in India’s second innings of their fourth Test against England at the Kennington Oval in London. Speaking on opening the batting in Test cricket, Rohit said that it was a big risk he took two years ago. The veteran mentioned that he was at a ‘make-or-break’ stage in his Test career.
