Afridi feels that this issue could have been handled in a better way. Afridi added that a cricket board plays the role of a father, and the board (BCCI in this case) communicates with a player regarding the future plans for him.
“This could have been handled in a better way. I always feel that the role of a cricket board is very important; it plays the role of a father. Whatever future plans a selection committee of a board has regarding a player, it communicates those plans to that player, like, ‘Look, we have these plans, what are your plans? Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) President Sourav Ganguly has opened up on Virat Kohli’s attitude amidst reports of a confrontation with him. Recently, there have been certain talks on the captaincy issues wherein Kohli had stated that he wasn’t told by any of the board members to not step down as the T20I skipper.
However, it is to be noted that Ganguly had earlier reckoned that he personally asked Kohli to not give up the role. After the Indian Test skipper opened up on the same in a recent media conference, the cricketing fraternity was left all confused as his statement contradicted what the BCCI President had earlier stated.
Middle-order batter Cheteshwar Pujara reckoned that Team India have the firepower in their bowling department to perform well in the three-match Test series against South Africa. The red-ball matches are scheduled to start on December 26 at the SuperSport Park in Centurion.
In the last 12 months India have won Tests in Australia and England where their pacers punched above their weights. Pujara, who’s a critical member of the Indian Test team, said that the Indian speedsters have the ammunition and the experience to take 20 wickets of the opposition.

The chaos regarding the contradicting comments between Team India Test skipper Virat Kohli and Sourav Ganguly, the president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, have intensified quite a bit over the last few days. Ganguly, also a former Indian skipper, said that he had personally asked the 33-year-old Virat to not step down from captaincy in the T20 format.
However, the Delhi-born Virat was clear cut in saying that he was never asked “not to quit T20 captaincy”. As per reports, the BCCI wasn’t happy with proceedings on Wednesday, December 15. However, the board is also aware that any strong reaction could hamper the morale of the Indian team before the three-match Test series against South Africa, starting December 26.
Even as Kohli reached South Africa on Thursday, December 16, Ganguly refrained from making any comments while saying that the BCCI will take the necessary steps.
“No statements, no press conference. We will deal with it, leave it to (the) BCCI,” Ganguly was quoted as saying to the media in his hometown. In the meantime, Kohli has lost captaincy in the ODI format as well.
As per sources, the BCCI office bearers, including Ganguly and Jay Shah, the honorary secretary, took part in a zoom call on Wednesday where it was decided that the board wouldn’t engage in any media interaction before the South Africa tour.
“Expert opinion was taken on how to deal with the sensitive matter as it also involves the respect of a president’s office. The BCCI knows that a Test series is round the corner and any hasty decision or statement from them could affect the morale of the team,” a senior BCCI official told on conditions of anonymity.

The All India senior selection committee, on Wednesday (December 8), announced their decision of naming Rohit Sharma as India’s ODI skipper, replacing Virat Kohli, who had only recently relinquished T20I captaincy following the team’s premature exit in the 2021 T20 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates.
While Kohli stepping down meant India had taken a step towards adopting split captaincy for the first time, he had clearly announced his decision to step down as only the team’s T20I skipper, understandably inclined to continue leading both ODI and Test teams. However, given the commonly adopted model of splitting leadership roles in white-ball and red-ball formats, it was speculated that the passing of the baton in ODIs was only a matter of time.
Come December 8, it turned out to be true. “The All-India Senior Selection Committee also decided to name Mr Rohit Sharma as the Captain of the ODI & T20I teams going forward,” read a BCCI tweet as the board announced an 18-member squad for the upcoming three-Test series in South Africa.
What was, however, surprising was, unlike the previous instance, when Kohli announced his decision in the public domain himself, the transfer of ODI captaincy came with a terse tweet from the board, per which the selectors “decided to name” Rohit as the captain “going forward”.
Hours later, emerging reports reveal that looking at the development with suspicion might not be foolhardy. It is leant that the BCCI had given Kohli an option of stepping down voluntarily but he chose not to, forcing the board and the Chetan Sharma-led panel to unilaterally impose the decision.
The development means Kohli’s tenure at the helm ends without an ICC trophy in limited-overs events. He will, however, continue as the team’s captain in the longest format.
