Synthetic fraud is a type of identity theft in which criminals create fake identities using a mix of real and fake information. They may use stolen Social Security numbers, dates of birth, and addresses to create new credit accounts, open bank accounts, and even apply for loans.
Synthetic Fraud fuelled by “Frankenstein Identities” is the hardest to detect and quickly accounting for the highest percentage of fraud losses, primarily involving credit cards and unsecured lending portfolios.
Synthetic Fraud is quite different from the traditional identity theft, and cyber scammers create “Frankenstein Identities”. Instead of stealing a real identity, scammers create a fake identity using a real and/or unused social security number, combine the social security number with a fictitious name, driver’s license and physical address to form the “Frankenstein Identity”.

A recent development from the Government has reportedly come up with a plan to tame Chinese smartphone makers who now rule the roost in India. All major global tech companies, including Apple, Samsung, Xiaomi, and others, have established smartphone manufacturing facilities in India. These companies are not just aiming to capture a sizable share of the second-largest smartphone market in the world but also widening their profit margins by leveraging on the incentive schemes offered by the Indian government to local manufacturers.
According to Counterpoint Research, the value of the Made-in-India smartphones shipped during 2022 increased an impressive 34% YoY. The rise in the value of made-in-India smartphone shipments is mostly driven by a local upward trend in premiumization, along with an increase in premium smartphone exports, particularly from Apple.
India has experienced a sharp rise in the demand for premium smartphones in recent years. Apple, Inc. has been dominating the premium smartphone segment in India for the last few years. Interestingly, the shipments of made-in-India iPhones grew a strong 65% YoY by volume and 162% YoY by value.

India has over 450 active web3 startups – a rapidly growing ecosystem that has raised $1.3 bn funding till April 2022. This new generation of the web is expected to bring new avenues for websites and applications that are based on the utility offered by blockchain technology.
More than $3.8B has been poured into startups in the Web3 space — which includes the metaverse, cryptocurrencies, blockchain technology, and plenty of augmented reality features. The goal of Web3 is to move towards a decentralized internet, and away from larger tech players currently in control.
While global response to Web3 is still shaping up, India’s growing economy, demographic dividend, and exponential adoption of emerging technologies, across sectors, position the country to become one of the highest growth markets for Web3 globally. In the last two years, Indian Web3 startups have grown to a 450+ community, with 4 unicorns, raising $1.3 billion of total investments, until April 2022.
Between 2021-2022 alone, India registered over 170 new Web3 startups, yielding over 50% CAGR growth since 2015. With increasing confidence and interest from global investors, investments in Indian Web3 and Web 2.5 startups have also soared. The sector has witnessed robust funding across stages. New age incubators have pooled in over $587 million funding, as of Q32021.
Today, nearly 75,000 blockchain professionals are actively employed by the tech industry in India. Active collaboration between academia, startups, and corporates, and increasing number of blockchain-related government initiatives, will play a crucial role in driving the Web3 talent growth in the country, as per the report of NASSCOM.

The subscription video on demand (SVOD) service revenue in India is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 15.5% from $1.3 billion in 2021 to $2.7 billion in 2026, driven by solid growth in SVOD subscriptions and an increase in unique SVOD household penetration, as per GlobalData.
India Subscription Video on Demand Forecast (Q4-2021)’ reveals that SVOD subscriptions in the country will increase at a CAGR of 16.2% during 2021-2026, driven by the increasing availability of affordable high-speed mobile internet, and a steady rise in household penetration of fixed broadband services, particularly high-speed fiber-to-the-home/building services, which enable the consumption of high-bandwidth OTT video content.
Moreover, the upcoming roll out of 5G networks will further aid in the growth of SVOD streaming services by facilitating a seamless streaming experience for consumers. The Indian SVOD market is on an accelerated growth path thanks to the availability of high-speed broadband services, growing smartphone penetration, and widespread popularity of OTT content among the younger population.
At the same time, the Global SVOD operators such as Disney+ Hotstar, Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, which have gained immense popularity in India, have been adopting innovative pricing plans with multi-device streaming options to expand their user base, and are investing heavily in developing premium original video content, especially in regional languages.

Worldwide wearable band shipments dropped to four percent to 41.7 million units in Q1 2022, as per the estimate of Canalys. At the same time, the shift from bands to watches continues. Wristwatches, consisting of basic watches and smartwatches, accounted for 76.6% of all wearable band shipments in the quarter, growth of 15% to 32.0 million units. Basic bands suffered a 37% decline, a sixth consecutive fall since Q4 2020. Basic band shipments dipped below 10 million for the first time after peaking at 27.9 million in Q4 2019. The increase in watch shipments helped offset the basic band drop but still resulted in a decline in the overall wearable band market. The rise of basic watches accelerated the shift from bands to watches. Basic watches run rudimentary real-time operating systems but lack support for third-party apps, as opposed to smartwatches, which run fully-fledged operating systems with third-party app support. “Consumers are favoring watches over bands. With bigger displays, richer features and longer battery life, they believe watches are better able to fulfill their health-tracking and digital lifestyle needs. “Basic watches are positioned as an affordable step-up from basic bands, suitable for price-conscious consumers with growing expectations as to what wearables can do.”
The consumer survey report states that, the survey conducted in April 2022, out of 4,000 respondents from four Western European markets, 34% said they intended to buy a smartwatch in the next 12 months, against 17% who would choose a fitness band. Smartwatches stood out as the most popular companion device to smartphones for Western European consumers. The future consumer demand will shift away from basic bands to watches, potentially affecting vendors such as Xiaomi and Fitbit, which are still shipping basic bands in significant numbers. Potential risks of ‘Buy Now Pay Later’
New research by financial advice service OpenMoney finds almost 57% of adults aged 18 to 50 have now used buy now, pay later schemes, up from 49% last year. The largest rise in usage has been among 45 to 50-year-olds, where 16% growth in the last year makes it the age group most likely to choose the payment method, with 58% having done so compared to 56% of those aged 18 to 24 - contradicting the belief that it is largely a tool for youngsters. The survey, among 2,000 UK adults found that the most frequently bought items using BNPL are laptops, phones and other tech items, followed by clothes and holidays. 41% of respondents said they use it because they can’t afford to pay for an item in one go, double the number who feel it makes financial sense to spread the cost. Among 45 to 50-year-olds, those who use BNPL because they can’t afford an item upfront increased by 20% last year. Concerningly, those struggling to pay off their BNPL debts has also risen, from 38% last year to 43% this year and one in three users have turned to friends and family for help with repayments - an increase of 10% on 2020 figures - while seven percent took out a loan and five percent used a credit card to pay back the money.
Buy now pay later services are a form of payment where consumers make purchases and pay them off over a period of time in several installments, often interest-free. While BNPL is typically interest-free, some providers charge high late payment fees. Hayley Millhouse, managing director of OpenMoney, comments: “While from a budgeting perspective, spreading the cost of expensive items could make financial sense, it is worrying to see that two-fifths of users struggle to pay off the resulting debt, with many turning to friends and family or other forms of borrowing to make repayments.” The UK's Financial Conduct Authority will introduce new rules for buy now, pay late

The demand for wearable devices has been on the rise and grew 9.9% during the third quarter of 2021 (3Q21) reaching 138.4 million units, which has increased to 26.5 percent, Unsurprisingly, the shipments for earphones, including the TWS earbuds, increased 26.5 percent, according to new data from the International Data Corporation (IDC). For the first time, the shipments of smartwatches surpassed the shipments of fitness trackers. With this, smartwatches have now become the second-biggest category in wearable devices, accounting for a 4.3 percent increase. Although the pandemic has driven interest in health and fitness tracking, wrist-worn wearables such as watches and wristbands faced challenges during the quarter as these devices were not immune to the supply constraints and shifting demand brought about by the pandemic. While the category has recently been led by Xiaomi's low-cost bands, the company was dethroned by Apple and Huawei in 3Q21 as they tied for first place in the wrist-worn segment. The reason behind the increased shipments of smartwatches is being said to be due to the users’ demand for more powerful features and functions and thus they are gradually shifting towards smartwatches. Also, there isn’t a huge price difference between a smartwatch and a fitness tracker, which is also a factor for the change.

Small bit-and-piece DDoS attacks (distributed denial of service) boomed by 233% in the first half of 2021, revealed Nexusguard researchers after gathered data from CSPs, honeypots, botnet scanning and research on traffic moving between attackers and their targets. As the pandemic carried on into 2021, hackers experimented with new attack patterns to avoid signature-based detection. In the first half of 2021, more than 99% of all DDoS attacks were smaller than 10Gbps.These small, nimble attacks can cripple communications service providers and Internet service providers if they leave detection to threshold or signature-based methods alone. Attackers are continuing to diversify their approaches with bit-and-piece attacks to bring down target networks and infrastructures. More than 95% of attacks were smaller than 1Gbps each, and a majority were launched using readily available and inexpensive DDoS-for-hire services. Rather than launching large bandwidth attacks against their targets, researchers noted that perpetrators chose to employ attacks using high packet-rate loads of small-sized traffic from DDoS-for-hire services, with the aim of evading DDoS mitigation detection systems.
