The Secretary announced that Invest India is going to be leveraged in order to bring in higher foreign investment into India in the film sector. The Ministry has merged various film units under one; NFDC based in Mumbai which is going to be the hub of the cinematic arm of the government and wants to revamp the Film Facilitation Office.
The ministry is going to hand this over to Invest India, to come up with a single-window portal for opening theatres so that more and more theatres can come up and the public gets more avenues to watch the magic of films in theatres.
Observing the changed viewing habits of people due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Secretary noted that when ticket prices were brought down to Rs 75 three days back, all shows were full. He added that this shows that if price points are right, people can afford theatres.
“The craving to go to the theatres is there, so we need to work on how we can bring people back to theatres,” he said. The secretary told the industry that the government hopes to table the amendments to the Cinematograph Act in the winter session of the parliament.
Going forward, the National Centre of Excellence for AVGC is going to be set up in collaboration with the private sector, the Secretary informed. There will be a proposal for a 48% stake for the Ministry of I&B, 26% for FICCI and 26% for CII, so that it is the private industry and not the government which leads the AVGC transformation. The Ministry of I&B functions will work as a catalyst for the upsurge in the media and entertainment industry.

By “unbundling” the transaction into separate micro-services, different entities are able to pick up and carry out different services. If successful, it will help weaken the monopolistic hold of #Amazon and #Flipkart – which dominate 63% of ecommerce in India, increase competition and accelerate growth. Nandan Nilekani, the architect of the India Stack and part of #ONDC’s advisory council, calls it the “most exciting business transformation happening in the world”.
To begin with, it would require the participation of all players. Buyers and buyer applications, sellers and seller applications; logistics players; and payment partners. ONDC was initially projected as a platform to take on Amazon’s and Flipkart’s of the world to reduce their dominance and democratise e-commerce in India.
At the moment, Paytm is the only buyer application from where buyers can log into the ONDC network to make a purchase, that is part of the network. Amazon, Flipkart and Meesho are in talks with ONDC, but they are still not part of the network.
Snapdeal has been in the news for becoming the “first e-commerce marketplace to debut on ONDC” but they have joined from the seller side, not the buyer side. This means that sellers on Snapdeal can also sell on ONDC to customers browsing from other platforms like Paytm. However, buyers on Snapdeal cannot enter the ONDC network through the company’s platform.
The aim of ONDC is to increase the gross merchandise value (GMV) of digital transactions from Rs 4.5 trillion annually to over Rs 7.5 trillion. It is also to expand coverage of retailers using digital commerce from 15,000 to more than 2 million in the next five years. It wants to expand the number of Indians using e-commerce from 90 million users to over 250 million.
But a question remains unanswered - on ONDC’s financial viability: Will ONDC also take the path that UPI took of 0% merchant discount rate?

The Enforcement Directorate had conducted raids at Bengaluru premises of online payment gateways like #Razorpay, #Paytm and Cashfree Payments in connection with "illegal" instant loan apps "controlled" by Chinese persons. The culprits were generating proceeds of crime through various accounts with payment gateways. This comes, after several complaints of extortion by people who took loans through such apps.
The funding and origin for these apps have been traced to China and have also led to investigations by the Serious Fraud Investigation Office, Intelligence Bureau and even R&AW. In an investigation, the apps are backed by registered fintech companies that are in turn backed by shell companies, numbering 100 in some instances seizing Rs 17 Cr in merchant IDs and bank accounts belonging to these apps.
Hundreds of companies were found operating from a single address in Delhi-NCR and residential areas of Bengaluru. The agency alleges that these entities were controlled or operated by the suspects based in China. They used forged documents of Indian nationals and made them dummy directors.
"Some of our merchants were being investigated by law enforcement about a year-and-a-half back. As part of the ongoing investigation, the authorities requested additional information to help with the investigation," a Razorpay spokesperson said.
At the same time the spokesperson of Cashfree Payments said, we have fully cooperated and shared KYC and other details. The authorities were satisfied by our due diligence process. The operations and on-boarding processes adhere to the PMLA and KYC directions, and we will continue to do so.
The entities under investigation were generating proceeds of crime through various merchant IDs/accounts held with payment gateways/banks and they are also not operating from the addresses given on the ministry of corporate affairs website/registered address, the agency said. T

The increasing penetration of the internet has led to an increase in queries for content translation to local languages. The past year has been pivotal for digital marketing with digital growth leapfrogging across industries. A report showcases insights on the shift in netizens’ online behaviour and their search preferences from the data analysed between April 2020 and June 2021. In the last few years, digital content consumption has increased manifold. The pandemic has further accelerated digital adoption with people spending significant time on their PC, phones, and tablet screens. With people starting to spend more time indoors and restrictions on movement for the better part of the year, people increasingly opted for online consultations and nutritional guidance. During this period, there was a 125% increase in immunity related searches, while home-fitness related searches like online dance and home gym saw 28x and 14x increase respectively.
There has been a shift in investment preference from physical assets to financial instruments in the past year and an increased preference for using digital channels. Asset management-related searches increased by 13x while those related to digital payments continued to grow at 12%.
