    Data protection Bill awaits consent

The Indian government has approved a draft of the Digital Personal #DataProtectionBill, which requires consent before collecting personal data and imposes penalties for data breaches. The bill is expected to be presented in the upcoming session of Parliament. While the contents of the Bill will remain confidential until it is brought in Parliament.

Nearly six years after the Supreme Court held privacy to be a fundamental right, the Centre has made a second attempt at framing legislation for protection of data. The Digital Personal Data Protection Bill, 2022, a draft of which was floated in November, is expected to be tabled in Parliament’s Monsoon Session that begins on July 20.

The Bill is crucial because irrespective of our levels of digital literacy or comfort with digital technologies, digitalisation and data will inevitably and increasingly impact vital aspects of our public and private lives. But, the question is, does the draft Bill adequately address the still extant public concerns that led to the unanimous privacy judgment by a nine-judge bench of the Supreme Court almost six years back?

AI in Healthcare: Balancing Innovation and Ethics

The #WorldHealthOrganization (WHO) has raised concerns about the ethical use of #artificialintelligence (AI) in healthcare. The WHO cautioned against artificial intelligence (AI) for public healthcare. The data used by AI to reach decisions could be biased or misused and advised caution while using the technology.

The World Health Organization (WHO) is calling for caution to be exercised in using artificial intelligence (AI) generated large language model tools (LLMs) to protect and promote human well-being, human safety, and autonomy, and preserve public health.

LLMs include some of the most rapidly expanding platforms such as #ChatGPT, Bard, Bert and many others that imitate understanding, processing, and producing human communication. Their meteoric public diffusion and growing experimental use for health-related purposes is generating significant excitement around the potential to support people’s health needs.

  • Smart Badges Market

    Smart Badges Market

The study divulges essential insights on the market on the basis of type (smart badges with display, without display), communication (contact badges, contactless badges), application (into corporate, retail & hospitality, government & healthcare, event & entertainment, other applications), and across five major regions (North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, Latin America, and Middle East & Africa).

A smart badge is an excellent gadget for workforce’ safety and security tracking, zone notification, and surveillance. It is lightweight and simple to use, with a single button providing access to many features that can be customized to meet customers' requirements.

Smart badges are widely utilized in government and healthcare applications because they improve patient security and privacy, give secure access to emergency medical information, and prevent healthcare fraud. A smart badge also has a panic button to alert an emergency discreetly and the badge's position, which aids in tracking the individual in hospitals. Government entities often use smart badges to adhere to government regulations, as well as to confirm a person's identification and physically allow the badge holder to a facility.

Smart badges use cutting-edge machine learning and IoT technologies to improve security and enable new functionalities. Moreover, a smart badge offers information about who is accessing what, when, and where, eliminating the danger of a security breach due to negligence or oversight. As a result of these reasons, the demand for smart badges for government and healthcare applications is increasing, which is predicted to propel the global smart badges market during the forecast period. Another major factor driving the global market is the growing demand for wearable devices.

  • WhatsApp data leak

    WhatsApp data leak

A question arises: will you stop using WhatsApp? Probably there is no answer to it. We are living in the world of digital slavery as the digital regime is under powerful digital monopolies.

A report says, the WhatsApp user database, which includes user information from 84 nations, shows that nearly one-fourth of WhatsApp’s estimated two billion active monthly users may be at risk. This means that if you know at least 4 WhatsApp users, including yourself, one of your data may be being sold right now.

On November 16, a hacker advertised on a well-known hacking site that they were offering a database with 487 million WhatsApp user mobile numbers. The dark web WhatsApp data leak file includes information on WhatsApp users from 84 different nations. Almost 100 million compromised users are just from Egypt, Italy, and the USA.

A cyber expert says, users of WhatsApp should take precautions because of the dark web WhatsApp data leak. Never reply to texts or calls from unknown numbers. This is because hackers could use smishing and vishing to obtain information. Smishing and vishing refer to hacker usage of fake links delivered over text or voicemail. Users risk losing important data or money if they click these links or follow their guidance.

According to a spokesman for Meta, the report about the dark web WhatsApp data leak is “speculative” and is based on “unsubstantiated screenshots.” He added that the business had not discovered any proof of a data leak on WhatsApp systems.

The official stated, “We have no information on how the alleged list of phone numbers was compiled or the extent to which they contain Hong Kong phone numbers. He continued that there were numerous ways to make a list of phone numbers online

The hacker is reportedly selling dark web WhatsApp data leak files on the dark web. It states that the threat actor is asking $7,000 for the US dataset. The price is $2,500 for the UK dataset and $2,000 for th

  • Indian Edtechs feeling the heat wave

Indian Edtechs feeling the heat wave

The edtech companies are the worst-hit among all startups as funding dries up because of the recession, among other reasons, forcing them to lay off employees.

According to a survey, Indian startups have already laid off nearly 10,000 employees this year—about one-third of those are from the EdTech industry. In many cases, these are teachers and educators that have been working from home during the pandemic, when the prospects of startups were booming.

This sudden increase in competition led to a number of other changes in the digital market. Owing to the increased number of advertisements for similar products, the cost per conversion escalated multiple times.

This drastically increased the cost of investment in the Edtech business as the margin between investment and profit shrank to become thinner. This led to incurring losses in most of these companies.

Indian EdTech startups were able to raise $4.7 billion in 2021, up from $2.2 billion in 2020, making EdTech the third-most funded start-up category, after e-commerce at $10.7 billion and FinTech at $8 billion. Edtech companies broke all records in terms of fundraising in 2020 and 2021.

Right from pre-product to late-stage, startups across stages managed to mop up back-to-back rounds without any hassle. Byju’s, Unacademy, Vedantu, upGrad, Eruditus, Classplus, BrightChamps, Cuemath, LEAP, and Teachmint emerged at the top of the list of startups raising money during 2020 and 2021.

Consumers have reported that certain edtech platforms are indulging in predatory marketing practices and unethical conduct, which include auto-debiting course fees from parents despite parents stating their wish to discontinue the course. This led to the government issuing a warning against such practices of some edtech platforms while mulling a common policy to regulate the industry last year.

When considering edtech as a complement to traditional schooling, instead of a direct

    Concerns on increasing cloud cost

Where the rules are broken. Such an attitude often gives rise to 'shadow IT,' which is the use of infrastructure, services and applications outside the boundaries of an organization's corporate IT policies. Shadow IT, that targets cloud-based technology creates what is known as a 'shadow cloud.

Many CIOs in the mid to latter phases of their cloud migrations are increasingly trapped in a vexing quagmire — handing their CFOs massive monthly cloud bills with no ROI to show for it.

Every cloud provider offers discounts and built-in free optimization tools, but the fact is not everyone uses them. Only 36% of #AWS users take advantage of reserved instances, and 31% use saving plans, according to the Flexera State of the Cloud report. Those numbers are down from 52% and 44% last year, respectively.

Accenture, for instance, maintains that many of its clients in the 30% and 50% phase of their cloud migrations are absorbing exorbitant cloud costs when expected business outcomes have yet to materialize.

We have seen the cloud companies have massively increased the manpower to sell the cloud solutions by addressing certain fear factors. A report says, many CIOs have adopted the cloud model with a fear of how their jobs will be affected.

IT professionals may even want to prepare themselves to convert their enterprise IT infrastructures into private and/or hybrid clouds, and to take on the role of provisioning cloud services for end users and business partners.

#Cloudplatform salespeople were incentivized to sell as many cloud access licenses and cloud usage cycles as possible during the business downturn to enterprise buyers who were tempted by discounts and may have overcommitted for monthly cloud services that would not generate proportional ROI in an acceptable time frame.

Companies with a mature approach to cloud learned to control their spending, deploying strategies like guardrails on who c

Recession looming: Tech giants freezing hiring

The damage from the #COVID19pandemic, the Russian invasion of Ukraine has magnified the slowdown in the #globaleconomy, which is entering a long term of feeble growth and elevated inflation. Stocks have tumbled across Europe, as soaring inflation puts pressure on central bankers to raise interest rates even more aggressively. With the US dollar in demand, the pound has sunk below $1.18 for the first time since March 2020, early in the pandemic.

As per Forbes, the Inflation stocks - which predominantly includes companies from the banking, insurance, consumer staples, oil and gas sectors - has declined by about 8% over the last month, marginally underperforming the broader S&P 500.

Finance Minister #NirmalaSitharaman, including the US, said that global tech companies are in panic due to fear of an economic slowdown in developed countries. After putting brakes on job cuts and hiring by tech-social media companies like Microsoft, Google, Facebook (meta), Oracle, and Twitter, Apple has now joined the list of these companies.

While the U.S. Federal Reserve took some time to respond to inflation, starting with a 0.25% rate hike in March 2022, it is getting more aggressive with its monetary policy tightening, after inflation numbers for May came in higher than expected. The central bank raised rates by 0.75% in June, its largest hike since 1994.

Let's look into how the global tech companies are pulling back.

Alphabet Inc. has decelerated their recruiting efforts. According to an internal memo, Chief Executive Officer Sundar Pichai told employees that- although the business added 10,000 Googlers in the second quarter- it will be slowing the pace of hiring for the rest of the year and prioritizing engineering and technical talent.

Amazon.com Inc. said in April that it was overstaffed after ramping up during the pandemic and needed to cut back. "As the variant subsided in the second half of the quarter and emp

    Wireless Jammers & Boosters

#Telecomindustry body Cellular Operators of India said citizens are unaware that buying, selling, installation and possession of mobile signal boosters is a punishable offence, they should take the government’s permission for sale.

The #DoT has raised the issue several times in the last 4-5 years and even conducted raids to check illegal sales of these equipment. It has been stated that the use of cellular signal jammers, GPS blocker or other signal jamming devices is generally illegal, except specifically permitted by the government of India.

Private sector organizations or private individuals cannot procure or use jammers in India. It has also been stated that it is unlawful to advertise, sell, distribute, import or otherwise market signal jamming devices in India, except as permitted by the government guidelines.

Through signal boosters or repeaters, users can amplify the cell phone signal reception. But unauthorised use of such products results in disruption of public telecommunication services which jeopardises the quality and coverage of the networks. The mobile phone signal booster is a repeater system that makes use of an amplifier to add gain or power to the reception in different directions. The use of these external boosters is to receive and transmit signals to a cellular tower with greater power and sensitivity.

The department had issued a notice on January 21 warning all e-commerce companies from selling or facilitating the sale of wireless jammers on their online platforms. The DoT also clarified the entities that were eligible for acquiring signal boosters, stating that only Telecom Service Providers were eligible for acquiring signal boosters and repeaters. The reason behind this is, Ecommerce companies in India are looking at a market opportunity worth $400 Billion by 2030 in the country.

Cyber criminals often deploy ransomware attacks by running code to encrypt data and then demanding payment in the form of cryptocurrency to release it. Since its launch in 2009, Bitcoin has become the world’s best-known and most popular cryptocurrency exchange, with more than 81 million users worldwide. Because Bitcoin lives in the digital world, Bitcoin users can send it anywhere in the world without any banking infrastructure or exchange fees, fostering peer-to-peer financial transactions. As identities can be hidden in Bitcoin wallets, it is the obvious choice for cyber criminals to get what they want and remain anonymous. There are an estimated 106 million people worldwide who now use cryptocurrency exchanges. Created 13 years ago, the first cryptocurrency, Bitcoin, was relatively unheard of for the first years of its existence, only used by a small group who sought to retain a level of transactional anonymity. The second cryptocurrency was not created until two years later, but as of January 2022, there are over 8,000 different cryptocurrencies.

There is growing innovation from attackers in the space of cryptocurrency exchange attacks. Consumers, businesses and governments are finding new ways to use cryptocurrency, but a recent string of cyber-attacks has highlighted security risks and shortcomings. There is rising concern that “there will be a hack and my money will vanish”. According to blockchain analysis firm Chainalysis, the total value of cryptocurrencies held by illicit wallet addresses worldwide soared by 79% last year to $14 billion from $7.8 billion in 2020. Crypto investors lost over $2.8 billion globally to various crypto scams in 2021. Illicit address refers to wallets used for cyber-attacks, Ponzi schemes and other scams. In many instances, cybercriminals use channels such as WhatsApp and Telegram to scam young crypto owners with the promise of doubling their mo

Enterprises are worried on the rising cost of cloud adoption

Our world has gone digital and sometimes it is not under our control. Anything we write or talk about, our profiles are available to the prying eyes of the world, including hackers and cyber criminals. We live in a time when not having a digital identity is not an option. However, all that may change with Web 3:0. The fundamental tenets of web 3:0 are privacy and ownership of data. Organizations are realizing the value that cloud adds to their businesses and cloud adoption has increased more than ever. While cloud offers several advantages including faster development time, ease of provisioning, quicker time to market, the cost of running workloads on the cloud is something that keeps the head of technology worried. In a typical On-Prem or an owned hardware solution, companies don't have to worry about whether the hardware is running or switched off when it is not required. If the servers are not being used, they are not switched off. In the cloud, however, if things are done similarly, the billing could go up meteorically.

Historically, cloud pricing and billing has been a complicated undertaking for many organizations–until now. Several industries are shifting to a service-based IT process via the cloud with some utilizing a hybrid-, multicloud focus to optimize important aspects of a business, like costs and optimizing organizational structure and compliance. The XaaS model additionally looks at how revenue is identified and forecasts new potential revenue streams. With XaaS becoming key for certain industries during the pandemic and moving forward, technology companies need to find a way to expand while coordinating their cloud-based services and data from a single platform or dashboard. Security becomes a major concern when working with cloud and multi-cloud setups, with application and infrastructure security ranking as some of the most important aspects of the new setup along with data management and availability. Cloud computing indeed offers

Emotet banking Trojan attack in 2022 | Cyber Security | VARINDIA News Hour

The actor behind Emotet is a hacker group known as Mealybug. Since starting in 2014 with the first and simplest version of the Trojan, they have turned their operation into a successful crimeware rink that provides Malware-as-a-Service (MaaS). The group achieved this by creating a botnet of infected computers on Emotet malware infrastructure, which they then sold access to. The botnet runs from three clusters of servers known as Epoch 1, Epoch 2, and Epoch 3. They rented this framework to various ransomware ventures, including the infamous Ryuk gang. The distribution mechanism of Emotet is through malspam. Emotet ransacks your contacts list and sends itself to your friends, family, coworkers and clients. Since these emails are coming from your hijacked email account, the emails look less like spam and the recipients, feeling safe, are more inclined to click bad URLs and download infected files. If a connected network is present, Emotet spreads using a list of common passwords, guessing its way onto other connected systems in a brute-force attack. If the password to the all-important human resources server is simply “password” then it’s likely Emotet will find its way there.

Emotet continues to be among the most costly and destructive malware affecting SLTT governments. Its worm-like features result in rapidly spreading network-wide infection, which are difficult to combat. Emotet infections have cost SLTT governments up to $1 million per incident to remediate. Emotet malware infiltrates computers through a network spreader component which consists of several spreader modules. The infrastructure that was used by EMOTET involved several hundreds of servers located across the world, all of these having different functionalities in order to manage the computers of the infected victims, to spread to new ones, to serve other criminal groups, and to ultimately make the network mor

Organizations are slowly implementing IT/OT convergence in manufacturing

    #Bharti #auto #telecom

A decade ago, when any tech professional thought of manufacturing technology, the first image that came to mind probably wasn't IT-related, especially not IT working with operational technology infrastructure. With the adoption of IoT, organizations can realize many rewards from the overlap of IT and OT in manufacturing facilities if they can navigate the challenges. IT/OT convergence in manufacturing drives Industry 4.0 and uses the data from IT to inform or influence the actions of OT, the technology used in physical operations such as robots, industrial control systems and sensors. Organizations can also generate data from OT infrastructure that IT networks analyze to produce insights. Any data analysis that influences changes in a workflow engages some amount of IT/OT convergence and IT and OT systems help organizations streamline processes and become more efficient.

The industrial internet of things (IIoT) lies at the heart of IT/OT convergence in manufacturing. IIoT devices represent the combination of IT and OT infrastructure and bring networking capabilities to operational machines. IIoT devices combine both IT and OT, which streamlines IT/OT convergence to give manufacturers the advantages of connected machines and data. Organizations also capitalize on IIoT technology and IT/OT convergence in manufacturing to remain competitive in their markets. The biggest challenge we could see is IT-OT convergence can pose security risks and scalability issues, where OT systems can inundate IT with data overload. It is always advised that the organizations are best served when they logically isolate their IT and OT systems on separate networks and strive to take inventory of their assets in the environment. However, there are several benefits to achieving interoperability between IT and OT systems, although the benefits vary from one organization to the next based on use case.

    #Jobs #Work10M #Malware

The attrition rate poses a challenge to the industry due to “exploding” demand for digital talent caused by a surge in digitisation in the wake of the pandemic. Recent news on India’s leading IT services company Infosys has the plans to meet its demand by expanding its hiring program of college graduates for FY22. The report states, 37,000 Infosys Employees Resigned in the last 12 months! 35,000 freshers will be hired by Infosys now. Voluntary attrition rate in the June quarter was 13.9%, a rise from the 10.9% observed in the March quarter. If we go by the figures, this means that over 37,000 employees have left Infosys in the last year. In response to increase in attrition rates, the firm has rolled out employee engagement initiatives such as career acceleration opportunities, compensation reviews, and learning & development interventions.

At the same time, Wipro also commented on the attrition rate in the industry, while attrition is a perennial concern, this time around the industry is witnessing “an unprecedented war for talent.” Talent retention is even more critical now since the cost to replace employees with certain competencies and experience between 5-10 years can go as high as 100%. Wipro has also announced its plans to hire 30,000 freshers in FY22. At the same time, TCS will recruit over 40,000 freshers directly from campuses. Its workforce comprises 5 lakh employees and had hired 40,000 freshers last year as well. The country’s largest IT service provider reported an attrition rate of 8.6% in Q1 of FY2022. The Microsoft 2021 Work Trend Index showed 41% of the global workforce are considering resigning this year - a near doubling of job-switching intent on the two years before the pandemic. Now it’s seen that companies are willing to pay a bit more.

    WHF-the new normal

Organizations are thrown into a new paradigm where remote work, or oftentimes called “work-from-home”, is the standard in office culture to maintain operational and business continuity. With entire workforces connecting remotely through different devices, organizations have had to face many networking and security challenges. Now more than ever, a new network model is needed to deliver remote working that is scalable, flexible, agile, and secure. The dramatic increase in the number of remote workers and the lack of an adaptable and an agile network infrastructure to scale up and support day-to-day needs has created the demand for network resiliency and reliability. With users remotely trying to access cloud-hosted applications, on-premises applications, VoIP, Virtual desktop applications, together with SaaS applications such as Salesforce and Office365, security and performance demands skyrocket.

It is absolutely true that the transition to working from home was quite a shock. Indeed, at first, they were not sure they could be productive and questioned whether working from home would work for them. The massive network traffic volume requires modern solutions that can be “work-from-home” seamless and secure. Traditional network architecture implements manual device-by-device configurations and extremely slow remote site deployments that cannot meet modern requirements. Hence, there is a need for a resilient and reliable “work-from-home” solution and is the industry’s first to deliver SASE services and private connectivity for employees who are remote or working from home. So that the employees are able to securely connect to applications in both private and public clouds.

Odisha to play role in PLI Scheme

Today aluminum is the most used metal in the world after iron. Bauxite is the only ore of aluminium. Bauxite deposits of Orissa are of diverse parentage. Bauxite is the ore from which aluminium is produced. Aluminium is a critical for all the key sectors it’ll help in achieving ambitious growth plan of India, with the vision of a $5 trillion economy. The government has been announcing Production Linked Incentives (PLI) across sectors. Many sectors need aluminium as a raw material which will continue to be sourced through imports rather than local production unless these anomalies are urgently fixed. As India on the world map as a global aluminium hub, despite possessing one of the world’s largest deposits, the possible key to fast-track India’s development is being ignored as bauxite mining is yet to be prioritised.

This is critically required for proposed infrastructure development, power transmission, manufacturing, transport and defence. Further, aluminium is a critical metal, essentially required for achieving low-carbon footprint and renewable energy generation. Starting from consumer electronics, household appliances, cooking utensils, doors and windows, food packaging, foils, work stations, automotive, transportation, electrical to industrial uses in the form of industrial appliances, aircraft, defence, communication equipment to spacecraft everyone depends upon aluminium. When there is huge demand, then a question arises on why the aluminium companies in Odisha are focusing for exporting of Alumina and Aluminium to rest of the world .The report says, NALCO has established it’s footprint over a large geographical area covering countries in the South East Asia, Far East, Indian Sub-continent, the Gulf, China and USA.

  • Impactful branding always provides competitive advantage

Impactful branding always provides competitive advantage

Branding goes way beyond just a logo or graphic element. When you think about your brand, you really want to think about your entire customer experience…everything from your logo, your website, your social media experiences, the way you answer the phone, to the way your customers experience your staff. Many small organizations and start-ups neglect to spend necessary time thinking about their brand in this broad sense and the impact it has on their business. At the same time, the consumers want a brand to be omnipotent, knowing who they are and what they need as they flit from channel to channel. The CMO Council found that 71% of consumers want a blend of both physical and digital channels and get easily frustrated with a poor omnichannel experience. There is an urgent need for delivering a better customer experience shouldn’t have to be that complicated.

According to Gartner, 89% of brands plan to compete on customer experience within the next year to win brand loyalists and meet customer needs to drive conversion. Despite these aspirations, only 10% of brands feel their current customer experiences are meeting these competitive demands. In many cases, the pressure rests heavily on marketing teams to transform customer experiences from expected to exceptional. Contextual marketing is currently a hot topic with industry research analysts. At the same time, Forrester sees contextual marketing as the bridge for the gap that exists between marketing and customer experience. Going forward, the marketers should go deep on only a handful of strategic initiatives, such as digital experience, content strategy and omnichannel with 360 degree approach.

PLI scheme is aimed to make India a manufacturing hub

Production Linked Incentive Scheme (PLI) was launched by the Government to boost manufacturing in India. We continue to see gaming PCs and monitor sales at all-time highs and Chrome-based devices are expanding beyond education into the consumer market. In retrospect, the pandemic not only fueled PC market demand but also created opportunities that resulted in a market expansion. The government of India had introduced the PLI scheme offering incentives to companies manufacturing in 10 key sectors in the country. It has aimed at making manufacturers globally competitive and attract investment in the areas of core competency. The scheme is targeted at making the country an integral part of the global supply chain. Production linked incentive scheme is likely to boost the manufacturing output in 5-Years.

PM Modi said the government is continuously carrying out reforms to boost domestic manufacturing. In this year's Budget, about ₹ 2 lakh crore was earmarked for the PLI scheme for the next five years and "there is an expectation that the scheme would result in increasing the production by about 520 billion dollars in the next five years . This is one of the best ways to encourage local companies to make their presence felt in telecom manufacturing. Telecommunications sector has played a pivotal role in facilitating growth of the economy and is a key enabler of digital connectivity and Digital India. Soon after the announcement of the PLI scheme for electronics manufacturing, the Centre cleared the names of 16 companies. Over the next five years, these Indian entities have proposed a production output of Rs1.25 lakh crore.

MNC's finding PLI scheme lucrative for manufacturing in India

India’s manufacturing sector is going to become an engine for economic growth and a unique job creator in the country. The government has finalised the norms for Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for the telecom and networking equipment and has started inviting applications for the second round of large-scale electronics manufacturing with focus on some electronic components like motherboards, semiconductor devices, among others.

The COVID-19 pandemic has permanently changed device usage patterns of employees and consumers as the remote work is turning into hybrid work, home education changing into digital education and interactive gaming moving to the cloud, both the types and number of devices people need, have and use will continue to rise. In 2021, the number of laptops and tablets in use will increase to 8.8% and 11.7%, respectively, while the number of desktop PCs in use is expected to decline from 522 million in use in 2020 to a forecasted 470 million in use in 2022.

The environment is now conducive for overseas component manufacturers to shift their facilities to India. As the nation’s telecom sector stands poised to transition from 4G to 5G soon, the PLI scheme offers the right impetus by aiming to create a vibrant telecom manufacturing ecosystem.
