The Spyware Industry Continues to Thrive ...!!

The Global Spyware Industry Continues to Thrive. Spyware and digital forensics technologies are being used for political repression around the world. These software can remotely infiltrate the most intimate spaces of a target’s digital life to steal their information and secrets.

Spyware is malicious software that enters a user's computer, gathers data from the device and user, and sends it to third parties without their consent. Governments in the US, UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, are believed to have spyware capabilities developed by “their own intelligence agencies rather than private military contractors.

Ongoing high demand for intrusion technology contributes to the resilience of the commercial spyware and digital forensics market. Even if one supplier is sanctioned, there is sufficient financial motivation for other suppliers to fill in the gap. As the adoption of Spyware increases the market has pegged to reach $12 billion .

  • The impact of counterfeiting

    The impact of counterfeiting

Globally, counterfeit goods account for more than $500 Billion in trade. A significant portion of goods detained by customs authorities is pirated or counterfeit products. Technology led innovation is the answer to the $500 billion Counterfeit Goods Market. Trade association FICCI estimates the global economic and social cost of piracy and counterfeiting to be upwards of $1 Trillion 2022.

The act of finding cheaper alternatives/dupes to luxury goods has increased in demand, especially in a country like India where most of the general public fall in the middle-class sector with a high consumption for brand and brand value. Counterfeit goods continue to flood both offline and online markets in India. This is because the scale of the issue in the Indian context requires innovative solutions.

Online retailers are taking the lead in deploying innovative anti-counterfeit measures and have already begun implementing internal measures to root out fake listings in partnership with brands who are motivated to protect their IP. AI/ML technologies are being used by these platforms to scan shopping listings for fake goods. This allows large batches of listings to be scanned in real-time, making the process more efficient and faster than doing it manually.

The Indian economy is deeply impacted by the advent of counterfeit goods. The government too, should formalise the use of emerging technology to identify counterfeit goods, expedite investigations and catch bad actors. It should explore partnerships with technology service providers and e-commerce entities to implement tech solutions at scale and conduct training for its officials.

Another solution is to explore the use of blockchain technology. It is a highly secure digital record of information analogous to a ledger. Counterfeiters commonly attempt to pass off fake goods as original items, and tracing the source of these leaks will greatly improve enforcement.

  • New Spyware - Hermit

    New Spyware - Hermit

#Hermit is a modular surveillance ware that hides its malicious capabilities in packages downloaded after it is deployed. Researchers have uncovered enterprise-grade Android surveillance ware used by the government of Kazakhstan within its borders.

Whereas NSO, had created the most lethal cyber weapon in the world, called Pegasus, the ultimate spyware, has always maintained that it was being sold only to governments. Pegasus was developed by the Israeli cyber company #NSOGroup that can be covertly installed on mobile phones and other devices. It was capable of reading text messages, tracking calls, collecting passwords, location tracking, accessing the target device's microphone and camera, and harvesting information from apps.

The sale was under strict supervision of the Israeli government, as per the legal protocol and things have been running fine. There have been thick rumours of its misuse for quite some time and in lots of cases, it was becoming difficult to believe that it was being used only for the purposes, it was meant for or sold for.

Currently, a committee is trying to unravel the truth behind it. While India waits with bated breath for the truth to come out, other such enquiries have already started spilling the beans. A special enquiry committee was launched in April 2022 to investigate alleged breaches of EU law. NSO admitted to the European Union lawmakers that the Pegasus tool was used by at least five countries of the region.

Google has found strong evidence that enterprise-grade Android spyware called Hermit is being used via SMS messages to target high-profile Android users. Hermit is a highly configurable spyware with enterprise-grade capabilities to collect and transmit data. The spyware also attempts to maintain data integrity of collected evidence by sending a hash-based message authentication code or HMAC.

As per the analysts, the #spywareHermit is likely developed by Italian spyware vendor

  • India to have over 250 unicorns by 2025

India to have over 250 unicorns by 2025

India will have more than 250 Unicorns by 2025. The country has now been positioned as the 3rd largest unicorn hub in the world and surpassing even major countries such as the UK, Germany, France, and more. Moreover, it becomes the fastest growing startup ecosystem and creating a unicorn every five days. As per the report published in the Economic Times on January 15, 2022, India – with 90 unicorns – is the third-largest unicorn hub behind the US (487) and China (301) and ahead of the UK (39). Indian unicorns are also exploring the public listing avenues as a next step to realize the growth potential. This prediction comes from the proprietary data analysis of venture growth investor, Iron Pillar, in its Tech Unicorns Market Landscape Report IV. InMobi was India’s first unicorn in 2011. Entrepreneurs are building bigger enterprises at a faster rate -- 50 per cent of the 130 companies reached unicorn status in the first five years after their initial institutional fundraising. The public listing of 12 Unicorns is another indicator of the increasing maturity of the Indian tech ecosystem. While there is a strong belief that this pace may reduce a bit in the next 24 months, creating 250 companies with over $1 billion in value by 2025 is an extremely activable goal for Indian founders.

India is on a global growth story. Thus, lots of global funds and investors are chasing assets. The internet companies in India do not even control 1% of the $3.4 trillion domestic equity market. In the US, the internet ecosystem dominates with 40% of the market capitalisation. The surge in fund inflows into startups to the digital transformation has disrupted everything in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. The pandemic-induced lockdowns have driven this rally, and that along with the huge market potential for these companies has caught the attention of global investors. Investors are looking for some sparks in new companies as they sit on a massive amount of capital. Unicorn

Indian OTT landscape sees huge transformation as demand surges for regional content

As the world emerges from the global pandemic, the video distribution landscape is continuing to change at a furious pace. The rapid migration of viewing on streaming platforms which accelerated in 2020 and 2021, has seen new data-based business models emerge, with an increased focus on advertising as subscription growth tapers off. OTT platforms in India spent Rs 3700 crore on original content in 2021. Netflix was the largest investor, spending around Rs 1479 cr, followed by Amazon Prime Video with a spend of around Rs 1035 cr, as per Omdia's 'India. India’s over-the-top (OTT) video streaming market may record a compounded annual growth rate of more than 20% to touch $13 billion–$15 billion over the next decade, riding on original content and pricing innovations, a new report said. Paid subscribers are also estimated to expand at a CAGR of 17% to reach 224 million by 2026 from the current 102 million, according to All About Screens. The current overcrowding of the Indian OTT market means consolidation in this sector is inevitable. Going forward, there will be merger and acquisition activity among local players as the emergence of new technologies and moves to revitalise legacy media businesses that are meanwhile continuing to transform the shape of the business globally, in multiple ways as the market continues to develop.

The growth in the OTT industry, which makes up 7-9% of its entertainment industry, will also be driven by low data costs, and the rise of short-form content, the report says. OTT platforms invested an estimated $665 million in content in 2021, with Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney+ Hotstar leading the pack with a combined spend of $380 million. The country is witnessing a boom in regional content and platforms created to address this demand. The share of regional language consumption on OTT platforms is expected to cross 50% by 2025 from 30% held in 2019, easing past Hindi at 45%, the report said. India’s video streaming

PEGASUS – A WEAPON FOR A DIFFERENT WAR

Journalists and news organizations can do yeomen service to the world by opening our eyes to the wheeling dealing, which happens in the name of statecraft, diplomacy and internal security. They also give us a peep into the world’s underbelly, which is greasy and is kept intact in the name of security, territorial integrity, sovereignty and the ultimate power of the nation states not to divulge anything. All we need to understand is how tech is used for things it is not meant for and not made public. A recent news from the apex court of the country said, there is a strong indicator state used Pegasus for spying, pointing to the involvement of "the state, its intelligence and law enforcement agencies" in using Pegasus for unauthorised surveillance, at least two cybersecurity experts told the Supreme Court-appointed committee. A researcher reportedly analysed iPhones of seven people, of which two were found to be infected with Pegasus, Cyber experts told the Supreme Court panel. Pegasus can be very safely be termed as the most potent weapon, since the atom bomb. A year-long investigation including inputs from government officials, leaders of intelligence and law enforcement agencies, cyber weapon experts and lots others has clearly proven how Israel’s ability to approve or deny access to NSO’s cyberweapons has been entangled with its diplomacy. In a shocking news, Chief Executive Officer of NSO Group, Shalev Hulio, in an interview to Israeli Channel 12 said, strongly defended the company's operations, though he also conceded that some "mistakes" may have happened over the years. Our technology has over the years helped the interests and national security of the United States quite a bit," he claimed.

Pegasus used spear phishing to enter phones, utilising a message designed to entice the target to click on a malicious link. However, it evolved into “zero-click” attacks with the phones being infected without any action from the tar

Talent shortages becoming the biggest barrier to emerging technologies adoption

    #Zoom #Apple #TCS

The ongoing push towards remote work and the acceleration of hiring plans in 2021 has exacerbated IT talent scarcity, especially for sourcing skills that enable cloud and edge, automation and continuous delivery, as per Gartner. IT executives cited talent availability as the main adoption risk factor for the majority of IT automation technologies (75%) and nearly half of digital workplace technologies (41%). Talent availability is cited as a leading factor inhibiting adoption among all six technology domains included in the survey – compute infrastructure and platform services, network, security, digital workplace, IT automation and storage and database. Despite talent challenges, infrastructure and operations and other IT leaders have increased the adoption of emerging technologies to drive innovation as organizations begin to recover from the pandemic.

Across all technology domains, 58% of respondents reported either an increase or a plan to increase emerging technology investment in 2021, compared with 29% in 2020. Furthermore, Infrastructure & Operations functions have witnessed a reduction in deployment timelines, with all technologies in deployment expected to reach adoption within the next six to 18 months. This indicates that organizations feel more comfortable directly deploying new technologies to accelerate growth, rather than relying on an extended observation period to develop the business case. Resilience and improving critical IT infrastructure are top priorities among Infrastructure & Operations and other IT leaders in 2021, according to the survey. As a result, they are prioritizing cloud deployments and investments in security technologies. In addition, infrastructure security is a significant priority for organizations as they tackle rising threats, particularly to endpoint devices in hybrid work environments. Is Pegasus over??

Pegasus spyware has taken the world by a storm. Developed by an Israeli cyber arms firm, NSO group, Pegasus can be secretly installed on mobile phones and other iOS and android devices without even a single user click. It snoops into text messages, tracks calls, passwords, location and even steals sensitive data from apps. Discovered in 2016, the malicious spyware used jailbreak to gain access to an iPhone. The trojan horse has been reported to be sold to the United Arab Emirates and other Gulf states including India for surveillance purposes. In July 2021, it was revealed by human rights group Amnesty International that the project Pegasus has been used to tap phones of high profile targets including more than 300 journalists, politicians and media activists in India. This is not the first time such a revelation was made. Such attacks were reported even in 2018-19 when Whatsapp wajed a legal battle in the U.S against NSO alleging NSO had hacked into Whatsapp video calls in several devices.

NSO group claims it sells the technology to authorised governments but little is known if that is the case. Whether the same has been used for criminal and national security investigations alone or to commit corporate espionage or unauthorised surveillance is a pertinent question. If used unauthorizedly, or illegally , it would tantamount to invasion of privacy and a gross violation of human rights. Are we following the rule of law in India? Although many of these safeguards are built into the extant IT Act and rules, the Personal Data Protection bill is yet underway and there is little or no evidence to question invasion of privacy through hacking and/or arbitrary exercise of surveillance powers. Though Section 66 of IT Act, 2000 entitles a user to seek compensation for unauthorised access and copying of personal data and Section 43A entitles a user to sue a body corporate for fa

Technology - crucial part of our daily lives

Technology has not only fostered innovation in our country but has also enabled the citizens to aspire for financial and digital freedom. Technological developments have led to revolutionary inclusive innovations such as blockchain, with digital assets like Bitcoin and Ether, taking the Indian youth by storm. They offer millennials and zillennials, who are now dabbling in alternative investment options a chance to attain financial freedom. Bitcoin is built on blockchain and provides unprecedented freedom that accompanies decentralisation. It places the power in the hands of the investors and eliminates barriers around transfers and mobility. Bitcoin and Ether are the biggest and oldest cryptocurrencies backed by sound technologies, and long-term disciplined investment in them can bring great returns and further the agenda of economic independence.

Technology especially became a crucial part of our daily lives in the socially distanced world. Industries all over adopted digitisation at record speeds to cater to the changing consumer needs and to stay relevant. The recently launched e-RUPI, while not built on blockchain, is a type of digital currency that shares some basic principles with blockchain of eliminating the middlemen to ensure the benefits, reach the beneficiaries seamlessly, digitally and without any leaks, leading to greater financial freedom that, empowers beneficiaries with leak-proof, digital, cashless and streamlined access to benefits without the need for middlemen. Financial inclusion will foster equitable financial freedom for the vulnerable and marginalised sections of the society, especially women, and are great enablers for balanced growth of the country.

5G to transform businesses across industries

    #5G #Microsoft #datacentre

The next wave of 5G expansion will allow businesses of all types to reap the benefits of enhanced mobility, flexibility, reliability and security. A survey says, half of those who plan to add 5G said they will build their own, and the other half will buy it from service providers. The report elaborates that over 40% of the organizations expect to roll out some kind of 5G solutions in at least a single site or more in the next two years, so that's extremely encouraging. That means 5G is indeed picking up for industries and that's also quite important for the overall 5G market, because unless there is an adoption, there wouldn't be an innovation.

When we saw the evolution of technology, firstly, 3G, device-makers displaced the carrier’s lock on the end customer. Secondly, with the advent of 4G, enterprise mobile apps and cloud platforms grabbed a significant share in a growing market, creating a whole new ecosystem of software players. As the innovation continues, 5G is also poised to shake up the wireless ecosystem—particularly in the enterprise market—and participants should carefully consider how they can capture and offer value. Organizations moving to adopt next-gen wireless strongly believe it has the potential to provide competitive advantage, unlock the power of other emerging technologies, and transform their organization and industry in the next three years. Business users will adopt 5G for different reasons than consumers, which means it is essential for service providers to understand what those reasons are and what 5G can do. Time to explore the possibilities…..

    Pegasus Scandal: 300

Whatsapp sues Israeli tech firm for spying on Indian journalists, activists

WhatsApp on Tuesday sued Israeli technology firm NSO Group, accusing it of using the Facebook-owned messaging service to conduct cyberespionage on journalists, human rights activists and others. The suit filed in a California federal court contended that NSO Group tried to infect approximately 1,400 "target devices" with malicious software to steal valuable information from those using the messaging app. WhatsApp head Will Cathcart said the lawsuit was filed after an investigation showed the Israeli firm's role the cyberattack, despite its denials.
