Made-for-TV movie inspired by the lives of David Vetter and Ted DeVita, who lacked effective immune systems. It stars John Travolta, Glynnis O'Connor, Diana Hyland, Robert Reed, P.J. Soles, and Buzz Aldrin. It was written by Douglas Day Stewart, executive produced by Aaron Spelling and Leonard Goldberg (who, at the time, produced Starsky and Hutch and Charlie's Angels), and directed by Randal Kleiser, who would work with Travolta again in Grease shortly after. The film had a personal impact on Travolta and Hyland (who won an Emmy Award posthumously for her performance). The two began a six-month romantic relationship sparked while filming. Hyland was then was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1977 and underwent a mastectomy. Despite the mastectomy, her cancer continued to spread, and her health deteriorated. Hyland and Travolta remained together until her death on March 27, 1977, when she died in Travolta's arms.

This was the first comedy that Laurel and Hardy starred in without producer Hal Roach, although they had previously been "guest stars" in four MGM movies.
After they finished making "The Flying Deuces," they returned to Hal Roach Studios to make films.
In order to make this movie, producer Boris Morros bought the rights to the 1931 French film "Les deux legionnaires," which had a similar plot. "The Flying Deuces" was Morros' first independent production and it was shot in continuity over a span of four weeks.
Only one day was reportedly needed for retakes.
