#Ransomware is executed in a variety of ways, for different reasons and motives. The technology also carries risks however. It may lead to a new wave of #cybercrime, as quantum computers can crack even the most elaborate forms of encryption in use today. This takes a quantum leap in the cyber world.

Ransomware has quickly become the most prominent and visible type of malware. Ransomware attacks are on the rise but few people understand the hidden costs beyond that of the initial extortion payment. This can include response and restoration expenses, legal fees and monitoring costs.

The sophistication of these ransomware groups even extends to the targeting of victims and how a ransom figure is decided as well as the negotiation techniques they use to exact maximum financial gain.

As per the report from CPR has monitored a 24% increase in ransomware attacks Year-over-Year to organizations globally. The weekly average of impacted organizations stands at one in 53 versus one in 66 in the same period of 2021.

Over the years, cybercriminals have perfected their processes in defining extortion demands and developed sophisticated techniques for negotiation with victims, with the aim of exacting the maximum level of ransom payment that the victim organization can afford.

Sophos research finds an increase of 94% between 2021 and 2022. More than two-thirds healthcare organisations in the US said they had experienced a ransomware attack in 2021, up from 34% in 2020. In the US, ransomware attacks on healthcare have become particularly common. 41% of such attacks globally have been carried out against US based firms in 2021.

The increase has just not been only in numbers but there is also growing sophistication of these attacks. The current situation is terrible. Ransomware has led to health care disruptions.

29% think existing laws surrounding privacy are enough to enable elders to protect their privacy online. Over 1,000 people across India participated in the Privacy Survey among elders. The survey from Tsaaro reported that elderly people are less aware of privacy issues and cannot protect their personal information online. The study analyzed that despite the dynamic changes in the Internet world and the heightened threat to privacy, 30% of people did not yet know about it. In addition, only 45% are aware of privacy-related rights as a data subject, raising some questions. The New Monetary Policy On Cardless Withdrawals From Any Bank’s ATM In India
The RBI's decision to make an interoperable card-less cash withdrawal facility available at all ATMs through UPI is a celebrated move. Currently, both online and offline payments can be made through UPI, but cash withdrawals are limited to automated teller machines (ATMs), a gap that the regulator wants to fill. At present, cardless cash withdrawal through ATMs is limited only to a few banks. RBI intends to allow the use of UPI to make this feature more accessible and bring an on-board large section of people in the digital journey. Card-less facility is currently operational on most ATMs but is confined to the bank's own customers. With this move, the facility will now become interoperable as it is done via UPI. Now any customer of any bank can use a card-less facility across any ATM via UPI. Until now, only existing customers of some banks could withdraw cash without a card at their own bank’s ATM network. So, if you are a customer of, say, the State Bank of India and want to make a cardless withdrawal, you can do so only at SBI’s ATM. If it’s not located in your vicinity, you have to make the trip to the nearest SBI ATM. Once interoperability is implemented, however, you will be able to withdraw cash from any other bank’s ATM in your location, using the UPI facility.

The growing popularity, adoption and also the ease-of-use that UPI facilities could have prompted this move. “As the adoption and popularity of UPI grows, the RBI is attempting to make it a more versatile payment option. The announcement opens the door for interoperability for cardless withdrawal across all ATMs of all banks. This will enable ease of transaction and further strengthen UPI as an all-round payment option. This move will be highly favoured by youngsters, who use their mobile phones to make all digital payments using UPI instead of a debit card. A report says, 92% of teens report going online every day while 24% of those teens are quoted that they are "online constantly". With this the cybercrime rate too has gone up. Cybercrime is any crime conducted by the use of Computers and/or networks where the computer is used either as a weapon or as the target. Every day we hear stories on cybercrime related to cloning of credit/debit cards at ATMs, ransomware, identity theft, KYC (know your customer) frauds, cryptojacking, drugs and illegal arms sale through Dark Web, social-media stalking, child pornography, online job fraud and lottery, social engineering, web defacement, cyber terrorism etc. published in the media. Cybercrimes can be against the government, which include cyberterrorism, spreading computer viruses, cyber extortion, hacking of government websites etc. Attacks against individuals include harassment, stalking, impersonation and privacy invasion; and on property include vandalism, stealing confidential information, copyright issues and so on.

Cybercrimes are covered under the Information Technology Act and the Indian Penal Code. The IT Act, 2000, which came into force on October 17, 2000, deals with cybercrime and electronic commerce. The IT Act was later amended in the year 2008. The Act defines cybercrimes and punishments. Amendments to the Indian Penal Code, 1860, The Reserve Bank of India Act were also done under this IT Act. The purpose of this Act is to safeguard e-governance, e-banking, and e-commerce transactions. There were several sections of the IT Act that came under effect where cybercrimes got registered under the Section 65, section 66 and Section 67. Will the global war on ransomware ever happen? Cyber Security remains to be the number one national security threat for the US since 2014 and by extrapolation for the world. A world which is a mosaic of countries existing for a variety of reasons, can they ever possibly understand a threat of this nature and respond accordingly. We have seen this happening in reaction to the Pandemic by any number of countries, till the time it got the better of us and we are still struggling with it. Over 30 countries have pledged to fight ransomware attacks in a US led global meeting. The US, the European Union and 30 other countries have understood the risk of ransomware and have decided to harden the financial system from exploitation with the goal of disrupting the ecosystem.

What does ransomware impact? From malign operations against local health providers that endanger patient care, to those directed at businesses that limit the ability to provide fuel, groceries, or other goods to the public, ransomware poses significant risk to critical infrastructure, essential services, public safety, consumer protection and privacy and economic superiority. FinCEN has tied $5.2 billion worth of outgoing Bitcoin transactions to 10 most commonly reported ransomware variants. In the first half of 2021 alone, ransomware-based financial activity is estimated to have channelized $590 million for the threat actors. The most commonly reported variants were REvil (aka Sodinokibi, Conti, Darkside, Avaddon, and Phobos.
