1895 में जर्मन भौतिक शास्त्री विल्हेम कोनार्ड रॉन्टजन ने एक्स-रे की खोज की थी। रॉन्टजन ने मानव को त्वचा और मांसपेशियों को काटे बिना शरीर के अंदर झांकने की ताकत दी थी। रॉन्टजन एक दिन सामान्य ढंग से कांच की नली के दोनों छोरों को तारों से जोड़कर विद्युत परिपथ पैदा कर रहे थे, उसी दौरान एक घटना घटी। रॉन्टजन के नली को काले कपड़े से लपेटने के बावजूद मेज पर हरे रंग की तरंगे झिलमिला रही थीं। रॉन्टजन ने महसूस किया कि हरे रंग की तरंगें अपारदर्शी पदार्थों को भेद जाती हैं, तो हैरानी का ठिकाना ना रहा। इस घटना का प्रायोगिक शोध करने के बाद रॉन्टजन ने इन्हें 'एक्स-रेज' यानी अज्ञात किरणें नाम दिया। रॉन्टजन के सम्मान में इसे रॉन्टजन किरणें ही कहा जाता है। 1901 में रॉन्टजन को भौतिकी के नोबेल पुरस्कार से नवाज़ा गया। इन्होनें इस पुरस्कार के साथ मिली सारी धनराशि अपनी यूनिवर्सिटी को दान कर दी। रॉन्टजन ने इन किरणों की खोज का पेटेंट भी कराने से इनकार कर दिया, ताकि उनकी खोज सारी मानवजाति के लिए समान-रूप से फायदेमंद हो सके।
1957 में इंग्लैंड के कंबरलैंड विंडस्केल परमाणु ऊर्जा प्लांट में लगी आग की वजहों का पता चला था। जांच कर रही समिति ने मानवीय भूल, ख़राब प्रबंधन और दोषपूर्ण उपकरणों को इसका ज़िम्मेदार ठहराया था। प्लांट में आग लगने के बाद रेडियोधर्मी ऑयोडिन वाष्प-आयोडिन 131 पर्यावरण में प्रवेश कर गया और चिकित्सकों की सलाह के बाद दूध की बिक्री पर प्रतिबंध लगा दिया गया था। जांच कर रही समिति ने कई सिफ़ारिशें कीं, जिसमें भविष्य में लोगों के स्वास्थ्य पर होने वाले ऐसे ख़तरों को ध्यान में रखते हुए ऐसे आकलन ज़्यादा करने की बात कही गई थी।
