Billions of users around the world are using the famous web browser Google Chrome. The risk of data threats is ever increasing. A report by Imperva Red has discovered a vulnerability in Google Chrome and Chromium-based browsers that put the data of more than 2.5 billion users at risk.
A vulnerability named CVE-2022-3656 allows the theft of personal information such as cloud provider logins and crypto wallets. According to the blog, the vulnerability was discovered during an assessment of how the browser interacts with the file system, with widespread flaws primarily related to how the browser handles symlinks.
A symbolic link is a type of file that points to another file or directory. The linked file or directory can then be treated by the operating system as if it existed where the symlink is. It claims that a symlink can be helpful for creating shortcuts, changing file paths, or for more flexible file organization.
Imperva Red explains how Google is affecting Chrome by saying that a hacker may have created a false website promoting a new crypto wallet service. Websites can trick a user into creating a new wallet, by asking them to download their “recovery” key.
Imperva Red says that it notified Google of the vulnerability and the issue was fully resolved in Chrome 108. It is advisable for users to always keep their software up to date in order to protect against such vulnerabilities.
With this impact, the website might then deceive the user into creating a new wallet.

The publisher of the thread disclosed that he was experimenting with ChatGPT to recreate malware strains and techniques described in research publications and write-ups about common malware.
Secondly, on December 21, 2022, a threat actor dubbed USDoD posted a Python script, which he emphasized was the ‘first script he ever created’. When another cybercriminal commented that the style of the code resembles openAI code, USDoD confirmed that OpenAI gave him a “nice helping hand to finish the script with a nice scope.”
Ten thousand users working in a major online brokerage company in North America were targeted by malicious hackers who used social engineering and brand impersonation techniques to gain the users’ trust and urged them to act swiftly. This gave users little time to think about the email and fall victim to the attack.
Users were redirected to a spoofed Outlook login page after clicking on the link. This login page asked for the users’ credentials, thereby luring them into entering their account emails and passwords.
As per the report’s details, users noted that clicking on a ‘Start Meeting’ button is a routine habit for them. Since the email contents followed a very familiar format, their brains did what they were programmed to do and acted quickly.
Phishing emails can be pretty easy to identify because they come with grammatical errors and links that do not lead to the websites they state. Moreover, phishing emails follow a format that resembles the original senders. Most times, simply hovering your computer mouse over a listed link can prevent you from a cyberattack.
Aimed at more than 21,000 users at a national healthcare company, the phishing email included a subject line of “For [name of recipient] on Today, 2022” with each user’s actual name listed as the recipient.
Displaying the #Zoom name and logo, the email itself claimed that the person had two messages waiting for their response. To read the alleged messages, the recipient had to click on a main button in the body of the message.
The main button would have taken users to a phony landing page spoofing a Microsoft login site. At the site, the victims were instructed to enter their Microsoft account password supposedly to verify their identity before they could access the messages.

According to experts, there has been a distinct rise in complaints about loan app scams in India. The cyber fraudsters target everyone but the elderly and the young are more vulnerable. The aged are not so Internet-savvy and neither familiar with digital safety norms. As such, they easily fall prey to these types of frauds.
People are lured by promising a higher loan amount without paperwork and customers will get the money instantly but less than the promised sum. As the customer installs the app, it will have access to sensitive information of the customer. It will gain access to phone contacts, gallery and other information. Using this information, the company will adopt harsh recovery tactics.
The loan agents will abuse and harass the customers and will go up to the extent of calling the friends and relatives of the customers from their contact list. In some cases, customers died by suicide after #cyberfraudsters allegedly circulated morphed photos for failing to repay loans taken through an instant loan mobile app.
Recently, Delhi Police busted a multi-crore Chinese loan application fraud and extortion racket, and arrested four people, including the mastermind behind the scam. The Chinese nationals, instead of establishing call centres in India, hired Indian nationals for different positions. Some were hired as supervisors who would then go on to hire more people to make calls for loan recovery while some were hired to morph photos of borrowers.
The Reserve Bank of India Working Group on digital lending said in a report that as many as 600 "illegal loan apps" are there in several app stores for Android users in India. A total of around 1,100 unique Indian loan apps that have the keywords such as loan, instant loan, quick loan, etc, are available in the App stores.

Even with the tremendous volatility in the crypto sector, there are many more traditional hedge funds investing in crypto and more specialist crypto funds being created as the digital asset class gains acceptance. Two-thirds of crypto hedge funds will fail due to the massive sell-off that was sparked by Fed tightening, Mike Novogratz predicts. Of traditional hedge funds surveyed, 38% are currently investing in digital assets, compared to 21% a year ago. Meanwhile, the number of specialist crypto hedge funds is estimated to now top 300 globally, with the pace of new funds being created accelerating in the past two years. Total assets under management (AuM) of crypto hedge funds surveyed was US$4.1bn in 2021, up 8% from the year prior. According to a report, most traditional hedge funds getting into digital assets are still just dipping their toes – 57% have less than 1% of total AuM in digital assets. But it is notable that for 20% of these funds, digital assets represent between 5% and 50% of AuM. Further, two-thirds of funds (67%) currently investing in digital assets intend to deploy more capital into the asset class by the end of 2022. There are literally 1,900 crypto hedge funds. It is guessed two thirds will go out of business and the recent collapse of Terra vividly demonstrated the potential risks in digital assets. The volatility will continue, but the market is maturing and with that not only many more crypto-focused hedge funds and higher AuM are coming but also more traditional funds are entering the crypto space. Regulatory uncertainty is a key issue for hedge funds, whether or not they are currently invested in digital assets. Lack of regulatory and tax regime clarity was cited as a top challenge by 89% of hedge fund managers who currently invest in digital assets and for managers not currently investing in crypto, regulatory uncertainty ranked as a main obstacle by 83%.

As per the Check Point Research, there is a sharp increase in cyber-attacks aimed for NATO countries that were sourced from Chinese IP addresses, The trend before and after Russia’s invasion into Ukraine, learning that cyber-attacks from Chinese IPs jumped by 116% on NATO countries, and 72% world-wide. The observation indicates a trend that hackers, likely within China and abroad, are increasingly using Chinese IPs as a resource to launch cyber-attacks after the advent of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Check Point Research also says that it cannot attribute the cyber-attacks to the Chinese entities or to any known Chinese threat actor, as it is difficult to determine attribution in cyber security without more evidence. But what is clear is that hackers are using Chinese IPs to launch cyber-attacks world-wide, especially NATO countries. Last week, the weekly average of worldwide attacks originating from China per organization was 72% higher than before the invasion and 60% higher than the first three weeks of the conflict and the weekly average of cyber-attacks sourced from China on NATO corporate networks was 116% higher than before the invasion, and 86% higher than the first three weeks of the conflict. The increase is significantly higher than the overall global increase in cyber-attacks seen during the same timeframes. However, the trend can have many meanings like, the increase can indicate where it is now easy or cheap to set up and operate a service or where it is more opportune to hide the real origin of the attack. ESET Research has released its T3 2021 Threat report, it says on the most frequent external attack vectors, the reason behind the rise of email threats, and shifts in the prevalence of certain types of threats due to fluctuating exchange rates of cryptocurrencies. In the world of mobile, there are alarming Android banking malware detections, which rose by 428% in 2021 compared to 2020, reaching the detection levels of adware – a common nuisance on the Android platform. India recorded the 6th highest Android detection globally, and the highest in the Asia Pacific region (APAC). It also recorded a 6.9% increase in 2021 as compared to 2020. The growing number of Android threats in India highlights an alarming trend, particularly as over 95% of the 600 million smartphone users in India are Android users. Additionally, about 75% of smartphone users in India did not install any mobile security solution, which meant that users could be susceptible to Android banking malware and other forms of mobile threats. To protect themselves against these threats, users should keep their Android devices updated and use reliable mobile security apps, the company reveals. The report highlighted that the most active botnet in T3 2021 was the Mozi, which in the last four months of 2021 amassed more than 162,000 unique IPs in India, 79,000 of which had already been compromised in the previous period.
India had the second highest number of enslaved devices globally with 29% of the unique IPs detected in India. Researchers also revealed that another vulnerability named ProxyLogon was the second most frequent external attack vector in ESET’s 2021 statistics, right after password-guessing attacks. Microsoft Exchange servers fell under siege again in August 2021, with ProxyLogon’s “younger sibling”, named ProxyShell, which has been exploited worldwide by several threat groups.
