The initial public offering of Paytm's parent company, One97 Communications, has made history by launching India's biggest ever initial public offer worth Rs 18,300 crore, at the time where the market does not have an appetite for such a large listing. The company has amassed over 50 million strong active consumer base and 25 million merchant base. A higher valuation could have been achieved but we decided to price it at a level where everyone makes money,” said Madhur Deora, group chief financial officer at Paytm, after the public issue. The stock was issued at Rs2,150, got listed at Rs1,950, hit a high of Rs1,955 and then went into a relentless decline. Paytm has its hands full with multiple business verticals ranging from payment gateway, consumer lending and various financial services, among others. Now investors and analysts seem to lack faith as they questioned the company's lack of profits and lofty valuation, whereas the competitors of Paytm including Amazon, Flipkart, Google and others are offering almost the same services. As per Axis Securities, a broking firm, says, “Globally, profit-making payment companies are trading at median nine-times of future earnings, whereas One97 Communication, a loss-making company, is valued at 49.7-times its FY21 revenues.
Paytm will find it challenging to expand its business going ahead. “Paytm’s payments-based business model has been disrupted by Unified Payment Interface, a real-time retail payment system developed by government-backed National Payments Corporation of India or NPCI. As per various published reports, Paytm made an initial public offer of Rs18,300 crore in November 2021. World's economic output to exceed $100 trillion
As the pandemic continues to flare, the global economy is poised to stage its most robust post-recession recovery in 80 years in 2021. But the rebound is expected to be uneven across countries, as major economies look set to register strong growth even as many developing economies lag. Growth among emerging market and developing economies is expected to accelerate to 6% this year, helped by increased external demand and higher commodity prices. However, the recovery of many countries is constrained by resurgences of COVID-19, uneven vaccination, and a partial withdrawal of government economic support measures. Global economy is projected to grow at a record speed. By the end of 2021 or early 2022, we expect the global economy to revert to its pre-pandemic level of output. At one end of the spectrum is the Chinese economy, which is already bigger compared to its pre-pandemic size. On the other end are mostly advanced economies which are either service-based (UK, France, Spain) or more focused on exporting capital goods (Germany, Japan) and are unlikely to recover to their pre-crisis levels by the end of the year.
The world's economic output will exceed $100 trillion for the first time next year, as per the report from British consultancy Cebr. Global gross domestic product will be lifted by the continued recovery from the pandemic, although if inflation persists it may be hard for policy makers to avoid tipping their economies back into recession, the London-based think tank said. India is set to overtake France next year and Britain in 2023, the move will help India in regaining its place as the world’s sixth-biggest economy. Further, Cebr predicted that China will become the world's top economy in dollar terms in 2030. Impact of Supply chain on Smartphone shipments
The ongoing October-December quarter is expected to see a decline in smartphone sales in the country due to the ongoing supply chain related challenges, resulting in annual shipments below 160 million in 2021, as the report from IDC and the first half of 2022 will remain challenging, with some easing out expected in the latter half of 2022. Vendors/channels will keep an eye on the over-stocking situation in case demand stays limited due to the price hikes by the suppliers and vendors. IDC reveals that, India’s smartphone market registered a year-over-year (YoY) decline of 12% in 3Q21 (Jul-Sep), shipping 48 million units after four consecutive quarters of growth. Much of this can be attributed to component shortages as well as an unusually high 3Q20 comparison base whereas this year’s post-lockdown demand was addressed by July.
During the July-September quarter, the online channels clocked a record high 52% share, although with a 5% YoY shipment volume decline. At the same time, the eTailer sales festivals such as the Big Billion Days on Flipkart and Amazon Great India festival started in early October, even before the Navratri festival this year, continuing until Diwali. Whereas, the offline channels registered an 18% YoY shipment decline. IDC expects online shipments to surpass offline shipments in 2021. The report further says that India was the third-largest 5G smartphone market globally, with 7% of worldwide 5G shipments shipping 10 million units at an ASP of US$401 in 3Q21. IDC believes that a growing dependency on smartphones is triggered by remote work and learning, as well as a subsequent requirement for better quality hardware is pushing consumers to spend more. With continued chip shortages and logistics costs, brands are also compelled to expand upwards in terms of price points across channels,” said the experts of IDC. A report from Counterpo

Top Wall Street analysts expect strong earnings results from the stocks of tech giants. Apple, Microsoft and Alphabet each reported impressively robust earnings results for the June quarter, demonstrating that these giant companies continue to go from strength to strength even as they face greater regulatory scrutiny. If there is any downside for the companies and their shareholders, it’s that the results will only concentrate critics’ minds about their sheer financial strength. A report shows Microsoft delivered its strongest revenue growth since 2008. Alphabet not only reported stunning revenue growth of 62%, it also kept expenses under control so well that its operating profit margin hit 31%, several percentage points above what Alphabet typically reports. Apple posted a 36% top line increase. Every part of its business expanded.
Apple aside, much of big tech’s surge is being driven by advertising. That was most obviously true at Alphabet—where its YouTube video ad revenue grew 84%—but even Microsoft benefited. The software giant posted 97% growth in its LinkedIn Marketing Solutions group and a stunning 53% jump in search advertising. That’s three times the March quarter growth in the search business. Alphabet’s operating profit margin nearly doubled to 31% from a year earlier, and up slightly from the first quarter. Since 2014, on an annual basis, the operating margin has ranged between 20% and 26%. The improvement was a result of Alphabet keeping a very tight lid on costs. But some of that might be related to a Covid-related slowdown in the costs of real estate expansion that may now be ending. At the same time, Azure, arguably now Microsoft’s most important business, in previous quarters has been reliably posting revenue growth of around 50%. Infrastructure and operations leaders often focus on new ideas, technologies and ways to deliver business value, while older data centers getting minimal attention. With a clear strategy, older data centers can be updated to support new and emerging business services, while reducing operating costs. Organisations with existing workloads remaining within their datacentres must decide how best to restructure their physical infrastructures to improve efficiencies and extend the datacentre’s useful life. Most IT infrastructure and operations (I&O) leaders are dedicating their attention to cloud migrations, edge strategies and moving workloads closer to the customer. Therefore, workloads moved to the new enclosure are unlikely to come from the same racks, and the older section of the server area will be heavily fragmented.
Once these workloads are moved, begin the process of physically relocating equipment and clearing out the next section of floorspace to make room for the next self-contained rack installation. As each subsequent unit is installed, the overall density of computing per rack increases, resulting in a significantly higher compute-per-square-foot ratio and a smaller overall datacentre footprint. This migration phase might also be an excellent time to consider a server refresh, depending on where existing servers are in their economic life cycles. Implementing smaller server form factors can increase rack density, while reducing overall power and cooling requirements. Legacy data center infrastructure with the right approach can be reinvented to increase capacity, support new business services, and reduce operational costs.
