Digital Economy of India to touch $800 billion by 2030

Digital Economy to touch $800 billion

India’s consumer digital economy which was pegged at $85-90 billion in CY 20, is expected to become a $800 billion market by 2030. The digital economy includes 60% of travel, 40% of non-grocery retail, 30% of education, 25% of food and beverages services and 6% of Pharma/Grocery going through digital channels by CY30, as per the data of RedSeer. With this growth we could forecast the next wave of entrepreneurs will create innovations which will make the Indian model successful globally. During these difficult times, most of the enterprises faced the challenge that their current levels of cybersecurity are not enough to protect their endpoints and servers.

The year 2020 has started with COVID-19 and a pell-mell shift to remote work, and finished with the gut-punch of a major breach that put hundreds of organizations into frantic access-and-remediate mode. The consequences of the pandemic’s rapid shift to work-from-home — and the exponential adoption to cloud technology that it helped drive — include lesser visibility into the security ecosystem, lesser control of access points, and a larger, more varied attack surface for adversaries to target. Over the course of the pandemic, there has been an escalating number of cyberattacks designed to exploit vulnerable remote workers and people who are desperate for information about the virus and vaccine. About 52% of Indian organizations fell victim to a successful cybersecurity attack in the last 12 months. Of these successful breaches, 71% of organizations admitted it was a serious or very serious attack, and 65 per cent said it took longer than a week to remediate.

    Thriving with Digital

94% of Indians surveyed strongly believe that digital wallets have made shopping easier. The acceleration of all things digital has made Indians turn to digital and contactless payments, digital wallets, digital gift cards, and QR codes as the pandemic reshaped consumer behaviour. India has emerged as a forerunner in mobile commerce adoption in comparison to its global counterparts. The survey revealed that 54% of the respondents will spend more money if they can use digital payment methods. Frequent online shopping is a trend that is seeing no downfall in 2021, with India ahead of other countries. The survey observes that 93% of Indian respondents prefer using digital wallets regularly as compared to their global counterparts’ average of 55%. 94% of Indian shoppers reported that digital wallets have made shopping easier and the vast majority (98%)have shopped at an online-only retailer in the past 12 months. The pandemic has given impetus to the adoption of digital payments in India, and consumers are increasingly embracing innovative ways of transacting using their mobile devices.

Apart, from the widespread adoption of mobile wallets, digital gift cards, rewards, and loyalty points, consumers are increasingly seeking retailers that have embraced digital and contactless payments. The pandemic has intensified the demand for digital wallets as contactless payment is reckoned as the new normal. India being a very high cash-driven market, the digital payment industry is still very nascent, yet fast-evolving. Opportunities for retailers have increased multi-fold in the last year. Consumers are drawn to retailers that offer fast, seamless, and secure digital payments. As we start to hit more of a stride in our economic recovery, the winners will be the merchants that cater to the everyday digital payment preferences of today’s shopper.

To better serve the market, it’s important to understand it

Understand the market to better serve it

It is true that, the entrepreneurs in the start-up eco-system survive, only when their product and solution are unique and have to complement the existing business, else the failure rate becomes 90% when the start tries to completely disrupt the ongoing business eco-system. There are also few cases, where the success rate is 1% ,the start-up tries to bring unique differentiation, by catching the needs of the consumer and meeting the immediate demand or lucrative offerings. During the beginning stages of a startup, finding your seed funding is more than half the work. Your initial funding will most likely come from your own pockets and then the goal is to raise outside capital. The reason is very simple, To better serve the market, it’s important to understand it.

One of the most common causes of failure in the startup world is that entrepreneurs are too optimistic about how easy it will be to acquire customers. They assume that because they will build an interesting website, product, or service, that customers will beat a path to their door. That may happen with the first few customers, but after that, it rapidly becomes an expensive task to attract and win customers, and in many cases the cost of acquiring the customer is actually higher than the lifetime value of that customer. The fact of life is businesses have to adapt to the changing times and the volatility of the market. While dealing with business uncertainty like Wuhan Virus, unexpected shifts in the economy and industries were caused and secondly, the startups also face challenges due to changes in the political, technological, economic, and environmental landscape — such as technological advances, data breaches, natural disasters, or new business regulations etc.

Start-ups’ losses Vs rise in capital

In India, start-ups have bought revolution and transformation in certain sectors. Although the pandemic had an impact on the number of new startups launched, which fell by 70% from 3,500 (2019) to 1,050 (2020), Indian startups recorded a total funding of $11.5 Bn, which is just 10% lower than 2019. 90% Indian startups failed within the first five years, lack of innovation being the main reason. The Indian startup ecosystem saw 924 deals in 2020, 14% higher than 2019. Indian Unicorns have been hit doubly hard with demand and liquidity crunch. At the same time, we have seen failures in growing numbers in the sectors like Logistics, e-commerce and food technology . However, the pandemic has knocked the well-known startups like Ola, Paytm, OYO, BigBasket, Zomato, Swiggy down to their knees.

India is a follower market and highlighted as the third-largest startup ecosystem in the world, but it also tops the list for failed startups. In 2020, despite many challenges due to the pandemic, Indian startups continued to battle hard, raising $9.4 billion across 881 deals, and adding 14 companies to the unicorn club. Investors and founders said the increase in deal flow is primarily led by significant liquidity in the venture capital space and overall bullishness in the technology sector across private and public markets, globally. The State Of Indian Startup Ecosystem 2020 — in an optimistic scenario, the total funding amount in 2020 would reach $11.3 Bn (which was 11% lower than 2019). So, the startup ecosystem has performed slightly better than expectations. Trends show that higher revenue increase has also resulted in higher net losses. Compared to 2020,both the funding amount and deal count will surge 19% and 13% respectively.

    SINCERE GRATITUDE TO OUR SAVIOURS

Gods on Earth as we call them, has never been so true as in the last 17 months. The National Doctor’s Day has just gone past us on the 1st of July. It has been by far the worst year in the history of medical practitioners in living human memory, where they literally became the saviours of mankind. They enabled us to see the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel. They have not been trained for a battlefield, but what they had to face has been worse than the battlefield and continues to this day in some theatres of corona war. Frontline warriors we call them, but can we even imagine living in such terrifying conditions even for a day. In a country where wearing a mask seems to be curtailing fundamental rights, they have been struggling with viruses to save others infected.

Realizing fully well that they are as prone to infection as any other human being, they endlessly stood as the sentinel of humanity, when all others had failed. Initially even the numbers of doctors infected and dying out of this deadly disease was not known. If we try to remember you would have read this news item, ”Mob denies burial to Chennai doctor after Covid-19 death, many ask if clapping hands is enough.” The news is dated 21st of April, 2020 and the doctor was Dr. Simon Hercules. A society which cannot respect its saviours even in death, one falls short of words to describe both the tragedy and the world. Still the doctors remained committed to the society they were mandated to serve. Their commitment to their job was way beyond the Hippocratic Oath they took at the time of their entry into the medical profession.

Women are more worried on jobs compared to men

As per the data from LinkedIn ,based on the survey responses of 1,891 professionals from May 8 to June 4, findings reveal how the aftermath of the pandemic’s second wave has left Indian professionals — particularly Gen Z and working women — increasingly vulnerable to the economic uncertainty in today’s evolving job market. The report shows that ,India’s overall workforce confidence has declined after peaking in early March, with a composite score of +54 today (down 4 points from +58 in March). This dip in confidence is reflected strongly across professionals from creative industries such as Entertainment, Design, and Media & Comms, who expressed being uncertain about the future of their employers. But as several parts of the economy gradually reopen, professionals from Software & IT and Hardware & Networking are growing increasingly confident about the future of their organizations.

As India slowly begins to come out of the second wave of Covid-19 cases, we see the year-over-year hiring rate recover from a low of 10% in April to 35% at the end of May. The second wave worsens ‘she cession’; twice as many working women worried about availability of jobs, time for job-seeking compared to working men. 30% Gen Z professionals troubled due to lack of jobs, compared to 18% Baby Boomers. The pandemic’s recent peak in India has amplified the importance of work experience and professional connections, as young Indians were found twice (2.5x) as worried as their older cohorts, about the impact of COVID-19 on their careers. The survey reveals that, ‘Flexibility’ and ‘work life balance’ become as important as ‘salary’ and ‘benefits’ today. Meanwhile, this growing demand for flexibility comes at a time when remote opportunities continue to grow.

Trends in distributed ledger technology in 2021

    #ledgertechnology

It is thankful to see COVID19 cases are dropping in India, but it is expected that the worst is still behind us. As the Indian economy restarts its engines, we want to ensure we do our best to enable Indian organizations to bounce back, and put their customers and employees at the centre of their reopening plans. We have witnessed how Fintech is empowering every sector of the economy. At the same time, the financial sector will have to concentrate on offering a high-quality customer experience. The FinTech industry must evolve powerful solutions as customers engage more and more through various channels. With more people turning to FinTech digital solutions for their finances, the FinTech industry will see tremendous growth in 2021 and is expected to be marked by remarkable adaptation and transformation.

88% of IT leaders say workloads have increased in the past 12 months. 60% of IT leaders who said their workload increased have noted an increase of more than half. Digital-first behavior is here to stay as customers develop new habits that will last for the long term. As digital engagement grows, customers expect companies to digitize their operations for multichannel, high-touch interactions. With this, we have seen a biggest shift of digital assets from a speculative fascination among cyberpunks to a mainstream institutional investment is forcing financial institutions to adapt rapidly. We expect this activity to intensify in 2021 as new services are brought into the market to satisfy the exploding interest. As financial institutions continue their digital transformation journey and integrate this new asset class, distributed ledger solutions will also help streamline middle and back-office operations while creating new business opportunities in open banking and peer-to- peer activities.

FinTech industry is facing radical transformation and restructuring, as well as a move toward a customer-centric platform-based model. Artificial intelligence is solely responsible for innovations in data analytics and product development in FinTech and the finance industry is driven by potential opportunities that help it to grow. With AI,ML and by capitalizing on robotic process automation customers can reap the benefits of easy and cost-effective financial services. By leveraging the power of AI, FinTech companies have tech solutions that resolve all the complexities and difficulties of the customers, right from borrowing loans to money invested in other profitable options.

FinTech is an industry that covers the integration of finance and technology. Digital disruption in the financial sector is driven by factors both on the supply side, mostly technological developments, and on the demand side, accompanied by changes in consumer expectations of service. It offers the potential to improve efficiency with innovation, enhanced supply diversity, and a more competitive financial system that yields market extension augmenting financial inclusion. AI helps reduce Return-to-Origin (RTO) frauds, with the help of AI-powered systems it helps reduce RTO fraud losses in e-commerce. RTO frauds take place when customers return a product by either swapping it with a faulty product or by denying that they ever received it in the first place.

    #5G #technology #msme

5G will allow for higher flexibility, lower cost, and shorter lead times. It is likely to provide the network to keep the manufacturing works connected in real-time with suppliers, customers etc, making them more innovative and significantly more efficient. Also, in the service industry, the technology will connect with speed and efficiency to serve customers online and further modernise the MSMEs. With the Govt. Of India giving approvals for 5G trials, India is gearing up for the implementation of fifth generation (5G) wireless connectivity for data networks across the country.

There are many use cases, where we have seen 5G has the power to transform current industries, create new ones, and influence societies with quicker speed, lesser latency, and greater capacity. In amalgamation, these 5G innovations are likely to change the way individuals connect with everything and each other. In the future, the technology will significantly impact industries such as the focus on safer transportation, banking systems, traffic control, remote healthcare, agriculture, digitised logistics and more. Hence, 5G is poised to transform human life by giving faster download speeds and connectivity for billions of devices, especially in the sphere of virtual reality, the internet of things, and artificial intelligence.

  • Digital payment is the road ahead

Digital payment is the road ahead

A report states, nearly two-third of respondents (63%) agree they have tried a new payment method they would not have tried under normal circumstances, but the pandemic has galvanized people to try flexible new payment options to get what they want, when they want it. With this interest and consumer demand comes a greater expectation for businesses to provide multiple ways to shop and pay. In fact, more than half of consumers say they would avoid businesses that do not accept electronic payments of any kind. Looking to the future, digital currencies, biometrics, contactless and QR codes are trending as emerging payments technologies as people’s comfort with them and understanding of them increases and the use of cash decreases.

In India, payment systems recorded a robust growth of 26.2 % in terms of volume during 2020-21 on top of the expansion of 44.2% in the previous year. In terms of value, the contractionary trend which started in the previous year (-1.2%) got further amplified and witnessed a drop of 13.4%, mainly due to lower growth observed in the large value payment system, i.e, RTGS system and decrease in transactions of paper-based instruments. While UPI has grown by 92% in terms of the value of transactions to Rs 41 lakh crore in 2020-21, compared to the previous year, the value of retail payments transactions grew by 7% to Rs 41 lakh crore in 2020-21. Overall, however, the value of digital payment transactions decreased by 12% to Rs 1,410 lakh crore in 2020-2021 compared to the same period of the previous year.

Leadership role is transforming with the confluence of learning

Today, companies of every size, in every industry, are striving to transform themselves in the digital age. Customers and partners are leading the way, demanding that businesses become more digital to improve organizational speed and decision-making, enhance operational agility, and deliver just-in-time market intelligence to create differentiated products, services, and customer and employee experiences. According to a recent Deloitte study on the changing organisational culture and mindset due to Covid-19, 77% organisations, including even the more traditional ones, have adopted technology quite well and use it to connect, communicate, and conduct business. Rather, Organizations have to move beyond statements to actions. And organizations have to focus on building deeper connections to create a more human workplace.

The future of work is driven by the confluence of massive technology and people related disruptions. These forces are changing three deeply connected dimensions of an organisation: work (what can be automated), the worker (who can do the work) and the workplace (where is the work done). Covid-19 accelerated the transition to the future of work, forcing organisations to adopt technology faster, expand to the gig-worker economy and adopt virtual workplace models.

Edge computing is gaining popularity in COVID-19

Edge computing was considered a futuristic concept – something that was attractive to talk about but lacked practical world examples. This has ceased to be the truth! Amidst spiraling numbers of COVID-19 cases, organisations are relooking their operational structures, to meet the new challenges that the second wave has brought about. As remote working has once again become a buzzword, paving the way for cloud enabled technologies to shape the new normal. At the same time, the cloud is gaining momentum, and enterprises are frantically looking for ways to optimize their network, storage and agility, edge computing has turned out to be the perfect solution.

Edge computing” is a type of distributed architecture in which data processing occurs close to the source of data, i.e., at the “edge” of the system. With the growing number of IoT devices along with connected automotive and industrial applications; latency, privacy, and bandwidth become critical limiting factors and edge computing solves this by bringing the intelligence closer to the source. Edge computing represents a crucial investment for any smart city in order to really reap the benefits of a next-generation IoT network. Its prime feature comprises closer proximity between data storage and processing which can be leveraged in enhancing the data management and processing for smart cities. Edge computing has emerged as the viable architecture as it supports distributed computing to deploy compute and storage resources closer to the data source.

IT Spending Predictions for 2021 to Boost Tech Companies Morale

Digital transformation is on a fast-track as IT spending has increased due to Covid-19. Even before the pandemic, most businesses realised the importance of digital and online models and had made decent progress to keep business agile and address larger markets. Pandemic reinforced the importance of technology investments to extend flexibility in different lockdown scenarios including Work from Anywhere. Most IT firms focused around empowering secured digital business did well despite India’s GDP posting negative growth; few companies have also shown a double digit growth for Fiscal year 21.

Forward looking companies did a lot of saving around business travel and office expenses during pandemic most of which was invested around securely extending business apps to all stakeholders, strengthening authentication and end point security, ensuring optimal app performance for Work From Anywhere scenarios and securing endpoint data. Business continuity was another key focus area with investment in hybrid cloud models for bursting in and out of multi-clouds from private and seamlessly managing it remotely. With rapid recovery during the 2nd half of Fy21 and India poised for the fastest GDP growth for Fy22, all hopes are on the growth opportunities for the IT fraternity focused around services and solutions to empower business to power safe, secure and scalable digitisation of business. We expect relevant IT to grow at 2X of GDP which would be around 26% for Fy22.
