Technology remains strong despite growing evidence that governments worldwide have abused spyware by targeting dissidents and critics. Spyware is a type of malicious software designed to monitor a user's activity without their knowledge or consent.

A recent study by Nasscom shows that the Indian IT companies made a massive contribution to the US economy last year through employment, investment, strategic partnerships, and business deals.
The Indian IT companies, alongside its customers, have generated $396 billion in US sales, supporting a total of 1.6 million jobs and contributing over $198 billion to the US economy. It also spent about $1.1 billion to grow STEM learning in the US and developed partnerships with nearly 180 institutions in the US.
Nearly 40-78% of the revenues of Indian IT companies come from the US. Of which, TCS, Infosys, Wipro, HCL Technologies and Tech Mahindra have more than 50% exposure. Indian IT accounts for about 55% of the global IT services industry market share.
A report released by HDFC Securities in June 2022 reveals that India-headquartered IT services firms like TCS, Tech Mahindra and HCL have doubled their revenue market share from 13.9% in 2011 to 28% in 2021. Interestingly, market share of firms with foreign headquarters like Accenture, Capgemini and Cognizant have dropped from 86% to 72% in the same time.
In 2022, the Indian IT industry crossed the $200 billion mark in revenues to touch $227 billion, an impressive record according to Nasscom. Indian companies also invested $1.1. billion while partnering with more than 180 colleges and universities building a more robust pipeline for STEM courses.
The report states that the demand for STEM jobs in the US is expected to grow 1.5 times faster as compared to non-STEM occupations over the next decade. More than 70% of this demand would be supported by the IT

Whereas NSO, had created the most lethal cyber weapon in the world, called Pegasus, the ultimate spyware, has always maintained that it was being sold only to governments. Pegasus was developed by the Israeli cyber company #NSOGroup that can be covertly installed on mobile phones and other devices. It was capable of reading text messages, tracking calls, collecting passwords, location tracking, accessing the target device's microphone and camera, and harvesting information from apps.
The sale was under strict supervision of the Israeli government, as per the legal protocol and things have been running fine. There have been thick rumours of its misuse for quite some time and in lots of cases, it was becoming difficult to believe that it was being used only for the purposes, it was meant for or sold for.
Currently, a committee is trying to unravel the truth behind it. While India waits with bated breath for the truth to come out, other such enquiries have already started spilling the beans. A special enquiry committee was launched in April 2022 to investigate alleged breaches of EU law. NSO admitted to the European Union lawmakers that the Pegasus tool was used by at least five countries of the region.
Google has found strong evidence that enterprise-grade Android spyware called Hermit is being used via SMS messages to target high-profile Android users. Hermit is a highly configurable spyware with enterprise-grade capabilities to collect and transmit data. The spyware also attempts to maintain data integrity of collected evidence by sending a hash-based message authentication code or HMAC.

A recent report from Check Point Research says that a malware strain has evolved to steal the information of MacOS users. For as low as $49 on the Darknet, hackers can buy licenses for the new malware, enabling capabilities to harvest log-in credentials, collect screenshots, log keystrokes, and execute malicious files. It has Named “XLoader”, the new strain is a derivative of the famous “Formbook” malware family, which mainly targeted Windows users, but disappeared from being on sale in 2018. Formbook rebranded to XLoader in 2020. Over the past six months, Check Point Research studied XLoader’s activities, learning that XLoader is prolific, targeting not just Windows, but surprisingly, Mac users as well. Hackers can buy XLoader licenses on the Darknet for as low as $49.
Checkpoint Research tracked Xloader activity between December 1, 2020 and June 1, 2021. It saw XLoader requests from as many as 69 countries. Since this malware is stealth in nature, it is likely difficult for a “non-technical” eye to recognize whether they have been infected. They usually fall into the category of ‘spyware’, not causing too much damage. Secondly, there is a common incorrect belief with MacOS users that Apple platforms are more secure than other more widely used platforms. While there might be a gap between Windows and MacOS malware, the gap is slowly closing over time. The truth is that MacOS malware is becoming bigger and more dangerous. The recent findings are a perfect example and confirm this growing trend. With the increasing popularity of MacOS platforms, it makes sense for cyber criminals to show more interest in this domain, and we can anticipate seeing more cyber threats

Ambassador of Israel to India, Naor Gilon said that what's happening on Pegasus here is India's internal matter. He said, “NSO is a private company which has developed Pegasus. They need to get export license from Israel due to nature of software. We make it a point not to enable it to export it to non-state actors. Don't know what's happening on it here, it's India's internal matter.”

दुनियाभर के 17 मीडिया संस्थानों की कंसोर्टियम ने दावा किया है कि दुनिया के कई देशों में सरकारें पत्रकारों और ऐक्टिविस्टों की जासूसी करा रही है। वैश्विक स्तर पर कुछ मीडिया संस्थानों द्वारा मिलकर प्रकाशित की गयी इस रिपोर्ट में भारत समेत विभिन्न देशों में इजरायली NSO ग्रुप के 'पेगासस' स्पाईवेयर के जरिए कई लोगों के सर्विलांस की बात कही गई। रिपोर्ट के अनुसार, भारत में कम से कम 38 लोगों की जासूसी की गई। इनमें पत्रकारों से लेकर कारोबारियों, मंत्रियों और एक सुप्रीम कोर्ट जज का नाम भी आया है। लीक हुए डेटा में 50000 से अधिक फोन नंबरों की सूची है।
