Rajasthan Royals were the title winners in the very first season of IPL. However, they have not been able to repeat that success again. They have failed to qualify for the playoffs in the last three seasons. Earlier, they lost in the eliminator in their comeback season in IPL 2018. On the other hand, Punjab Kings who haven’t won the trophy yet finished sixth in the points table last season. In the upcoming edition of IPL, both the sides will meet on May 07 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
These teams have met in 23 matches so far in IPL, of which 13 have been won by Rajasthan Royals, and the rest 10 by Punjab Kings including a super over victory. RR walked away with a thrilling two-run win when these two sides met last.
Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson has scored the most runs (529) in the clashes between the two teams in the IPL. He is followed by KL Rahul (490), Shaun Marsh (409), and Ajinkya Rahane (373). Among the bowlers, Piyush Chawla has taken the most wickets (14) followed by Siddharth Trivedi (11). Arshdeep Singh, James Faulkner and Mohammed Shami have taken 10 wickets each.
Both the teams last met in the 32nd match of IPL 2021 and it was a thriller of a game. RR batted first and posted a massive score of 185 runs in 20 overs with Yashasvi Jaiswal and Mahipal Lomror scoring 49 and 43 runs respectively. Arshdeep Singh was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 5/32 in 4 overs. In the run-chase, KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal added 120 runs for the opening partnership as PSBK looked destined for a comfortable victory. With just four runs needed off the last over, Kartik Tyagi bowled a brilliant over to concede just one run as PBKS shockingly lost the match by two runs.

They did it in Sharjah but it ended with a heartbreak at the Wankhede Stadium as Sanju Samson’s century went in vain. Chasing a mammoth 222, the newly-appointed skipper kept the fight on until the last delivery but just could not make it.
Having called rightly in a game of debuts, he inserted KL Rahul’s Punjab Kings to bat. The Kings included three debutants in Shahrukh Khan, Jhye Richardson, and Riley Meredith as opposed to two from Rajasthan: Chetan Sakaraiya and Manan Vohra.
Given their IPL 2020 performance, the Kings stuck with KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal as openers, although Sakariya struck in the second over of his spell as the latter nicked him behind. At three, Chris Gayle took a while before smacking Mustafizur Rahman and Chris Morris for boundaries in consecutive overs.
46 at the loss of Agarwal’s wicket at the end of the powerplay, Rajasthan gave life to both Rahul and Gayle as Stokes failed to hold onto a tough chance off Gopal, while Rahul Tewatia dropped Gayle off his bowling a couple of overs later.
The duo infused momentum in the partnership, slamming boundaries regularly in overs 6-9, although Gayle holed out to long-on, off Riyan Parag, just when the 67-run partnership had begun to look threatening. Little did Rajasthan know about the carnage that awaited!

Rajasthan Royals will open their campaign in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 by locking horns against Punjab Kings on Monday (April 12, 2021) at the Wankhede Stadium. The Royals have been one of the most inconsistent teams in recent years and would be hoping to start the brand new season on a promising note. Last year, they had finished at the bottom of the points table after managing just 6 wins. The Royals will take the field this season with a new captain and would be hoping that the new leader changes their fortunes.
With bowling being their weak point last season, despite Jofra Archer’s brilliant stint, the royals mainly focused on that category. Eventually, they ended up taking Chris Morris the most expensive player in the history of IPL Auctions. They got the South African for 16.25 crore.

Two of the biggest puzzles in the Indian Premier League will meet each other as they kick start the proceedings for the 14th time in their IPL life. Punjab Kings, as they are called now, and the Rajasthan Royals. It is difficult to be either of them. In a league of immense competition and fortune, both Punjab and Rajasthan have often ended on the wrong side of the spectrum. They will be back at it, once again, with renewed hope and vigor. One of them with even a new name. The other one with a new captain. How much of these can change their fortunes? That is for time to tell.
In 2020, Punjab finished sixth (owing to their superior net run rate), although tied on points with Rajasthan (12), who earned a wooden spoon. For someone who won the inaugural edition of the league, the Royals have done little to live up to the reputation. After a spectacular start in the 2020 edition, where they won and did so dominantly, they slipped hard and never seemed in control of things.
The track proved to be a belter in the second encounter between Chennai and Delhi. Expect some early movement for the pacers, after which, variations will be the best bet. If you are a spinner, beware. Not to take any credit away from either Prithvi Shaw or Shikhar Dhawan, the wicket did play better during the chase, which has not been the case at the Wankhede for the first time.
