1988നു മുന്‍പ് 40 ഓളം ആളുകള്‍ മാത്രം ജീവിച്ചിരുന്ന ഗ്രാമമായിരുന്നുമഡഗാസ്‌കറിലെ ഇലാകാക്ക.അടുത്തുള്ള നദീതീരങ്ങളില്‍ നിന്ന് ഇന്ദ്രനീലക്കല്ലുകളുടെ ശേഖരം കണ്ടെത്തിയതോടെ ലോകത്തെമ്പാടുമുള്ള രത്‌നവ്യാപാരികള്‍ ഇലാകാക്കയിലേക്കെത്തി. 1999 ആയതോടെ ഇവിടുത്തെ ജനസംഖ്യ 1 ലക്ഷം കവിഞ്ഞു.രാജ്യാന്തര വിപണിയിലേറെ വിലപിടിപ്പുള്ള ഇന്ദ്രനീല ക്കല്ലുകളുടെ പല നിറത്തിലുള്ള ശേഖരം ഇവിടെനിന്ന് ലഭിച്ചു തുടങ്ങി.ജനങ്ങള്‍ മറ്റ് ജോലികള്‍ ഉപേക്ഷിച്ച് മണ്ണ് മാന്തി രത്‌നമെടുക്കുന്ന തിരക്കിലായി. ആഴ്ചതോറും 20 ലക്ഷം ഡോളറിന്റെ വരെ വിപണന നടന്നിരുന്നു.സത്യത്തിലിവിടെ സാധാരണക്കാര്‌ക്കൊന്നും ലഭിക്കുന്നില്ല.നാട് കുഴിച്ച് കിട്ടുന്നത് ഇടനിലക്കാര്‍ നിയമവിുദ്ധമായി കടത്തുന്നു.വലിയ നിധിയുടെ മുകളില് ദരിദ്രരായി തന്നെ ഈ ജനത ഇന്നും ജീവിക്കുന്നു.
