RaaS - notorious ransomware operators
Cyberthreats are evolving rapidly and becoming more sophisticated and complex. Operators leverage real-world events to deceive individual victims, enterprises and governments all over the globe. Ransomware Evil or REvil is one of the latest Ransomeware-as-a-service (RaaS) operators. This criminal group provides adaptable encryptors and decryptors, infrastructure and services for negotiation communications, and a leak site for publishing stolen data when victims don’t pay the ransom demand. As per the observation of cases, REvil and its affiliates pulled in an average payment of $2.25 million during the first six months of 2021. Last month, it extracted $11 million payment from the U.S. subsidiary of the world’s largest meat packing company based in Brazil, demanded $5 million from a Brazilian medical diagnostics firm and launched a large-scale attack on dozens, perhaps hundreds, of companies that use IT management software from Kaseya VSA.
Unit 42, a response-ready global team comprising threat researchers and cybersecurity consultants, has been monitoring threat actors involved in ransomware attacks and has worked over a dozen REvil cases so far this year. Ransomware is going to dominate the cybercrime landscape. A report prepared by Unit 42 and The Crypsis Group incident response and digital forensics firm, notified several disturbing threat trends. In 2020, the average ransom payment by organisations increased nearly threefold ($1,15,123 in 2019 to $3,12,493 in 2020); the highest ransom payment doubled ($5 million in 2019 to $10 million in 2020), and the highest ransomware demand also doubled ($15 million in 2019 to $30 million in 2020). Industry data indicated healthcare was the most targeted and vulnerable sector in 2020 and the sector continues to be under further attacks by RaaS models. Out of various sectors, the #CheckPointresearch says, Education/Research was most attacked by overall cyberattacks in Q3, with an average of 2,148 attacks per organization every week, an increase of 18% compared to the third quarter of 2021.

The new cyberattack data speaks on how the healthcare sector was the most targeted industry in terms of ransomware in the third quarter of 2022, with one in 42 organizations impacted by ransomware, a 5% increase YoY.

Experts say, Ransomware gangs continue to focus their efforts on targeting hospitals, largely because of intense pressure for these organizations to respond fast. A ransomware attack on a hospital can lead to potentially catastrophic consequences, such as delayed surgeries, hold ups in patient care and rescheduled doctor appointments.
Even if an attack doesn’t shut a hospital down, it can knock some or all digital systems offline, cutting doctors’ and nurses’ access to digital information like patient records and recommendations for care.

A report of Checkpoint research says, few small and medium sized businesses realise they are just at risk, if not more so than larger enterprises. In fact, in 2022 alone, 61% of all cyberattacks were aimed at small businesses.
The importance of SMBs in India cannot be ignored where the Ministry of State for Micro Small and Medium Enterprises stated that MSMEs contributed to 35.98 percent of India’s total manufacturing output in 2020-21, with MSMEs providing employment to about 111 million persons in India and contributing to approximately 50 percent of overall exports from the country. Infact MSMEs account for 27 percent of India’s GDP and serves as the backbone of the economy according a recent Assocham-Crisil report.
Part of the appeal for these cyberattacks on SMBs is that SMBs retain a wealth of confidential information from medical records to bank accounts, all of which cybercriminals can either sell or hold for ransom.

The survey found that companies are challenged with more complex hybrid IT environments and are raising budgets to fend off #cyberattacks as well as keep up as production environments continue to diversify across various clouds. The result is that IT leaders feel they aren’t sufficiently protected.
A top priority of organizations this year is improving reliability and success of backups, followed by ensuring that Infrastructure as a Service and Software as a Service protection is equitable to the protection they rely on for datacenter-centric workloads.
Globally, organizations expect to increase their data protection budget in 2023 by 6.5%, which is notably higher than overall spending plans in other areas of IT. Of the 85% of organizations planning on increasing their data protection budgets, their average planned increase is 8.3% and often in concert with increased investments in #cybersecurity tools.
Cyberattacks caused the most impactful outages for organizations in 2020, 2021 and 2022, according to the report. 85% of organizations were attacked at least once in the past 12 months; up from 76% in last year’s report. Specifically, recovery is a main concern as organizations reported that only 55% of their encrypted/destroyed data was recoverable from attacks.

A top priority of organizations this year is improving reliability and success of backups, followed by ensuring that Infrastructure as a Service and Software as a Service protection is equitable to the protection they rely on for datacenter-centric workloads.
Globally, organizations expect to increase their data protection budget in 2023 by 6.5%, which is notably higher than overall spending plans in other areas of IT. Of the 85% of organizations planning on increasing their data protection budgets, their average planned increase is 8.3% and often in concert with increased investments in #cybersecurity tools.
Cyberattacks caused the most impactful outages for organizations in 2020, 2021 and 2022, according to the report. 85% of organizations were attacked at least once in the past 12 months; up from 76% in last year’s report. Specifically, recovery is a main concern as organizations reported that only 55% of their encrypted/destroyed data was recoverable from attacks.
According to the survey, the single most important aspect that organizations are looking for in a Modern Data Protection solution is the “integration of data protection within a cyber preparedness strategy.
Secondly, due to its burden on budgets and manpower, ransomware and the current volatile cyber security landscape are taking priority for IT teams.
