Web3 - the next evolution of the internet
The internet that connects the global network of billions of interconnected computers and other such devices is single-handedly responsible for impacting the everyday world around us. We already live in a virtual world.The internet has blurred the line between reality and virtual space. The current iteration of the internet is still seeing many advancements with each passing day. Experts postulate that the next version of the internet will be more sophisticated and intelligent than the current one. Tim Berners Lee labeled web 3.0 as the semantic web. Now Web3 is to take the world wide web as we know it and add blockchains – the technology behind cryptocurrencies like bitcoin – to everything. The proponents of Web3 say it is now dominated by big corporations and proprietary algorithms. The primary idea behind Web3—the term was coined in 2014, by Gavin Wood, it will be based on the same blockchain technology that powers things like cryptocurrencies and NFTs. Blockchains are essentially incorruptible digital ledgers that can be used to track the movement of digital assets. Just as cryptocurrency in theory bypasses central authorities such as banks, Web3 would also bypass the central authorities we know as Big Tech. It is all about A paradigm for the Internet and this is where Web3 comes in. The last two decades have proven that building a scalable system that decentralizes content is a challenge. While the technology to build such systems exists, no content platform achieves decentralization at scale.

Web 3.0 is the game-changer for India in every industry possible in the near future. There is a low domain penetration in India that is calculated by the number of domains owned by a country divided by the number of internet users. It has been observed that the domain penetration in India is only 0.6% meanwhile, the USA has 43%. But the USA ranks third after India as per the total population rate. Still, India’s domain penetration shows much less than that of the USA. It is due to multiple reasons such as the proper utilization of the internet, per capita income, and many more. India has over 450 active web3 startups – a rapidly growing ecosystem that has raised $1.3 bn funding till April 2022. This new generation of the web is expected to bring new avenues for websites and applications that are based on the utility offered by blockchain technology.
More than $3.8B has been poured into startups in the Web3 space — which includes the metaverse, cryptocurrencies, blockchain technology, and plenty of augmented reality features. The goal of Web3 is to move towards a decentralized internet, and away from larger tech players currently in control.
While global response to Web3 is still shaping up, India’s growing economy, demographic dividend, and exponential adoption of emerging technologies, across sectors, position the country to become one of the highest growth markets for Web3 globally. In the last two years, Indian Web3 startups have grown to a 450+ community, with 4 unicorns, raising $1.3 billion of total investments, until April 2022.
Between 2021-2022 alone, India registered over 170 new Web3 startups, yielding over 50% CAGR growth since 2015. With increasing confidence and interest from global investors, investments in Indian Web3 and Web 2.5 startups have also soared. The sector has witnessed robust funding across stages. New age incubators have pooled in over $587 million funding, as of Q32021.
Today, nearly 75,000 blockchain professionals are actively employed by the tech industry in India. Active collaboration between academia, startups, and corporates, and increasing number of blockchain-related government initiatives, will play a crucial role in driving the Web3 talent growth in the country, as per the report of NASSCOM.

In India, #cryptocurrency, metaverse, and non-fungible tokens or NFTs are the most popular and desired fields for a Web3 career. Indian users interested in working in Web3 show a stronger passion for #metaverse, NFT, and blockchain-based gaming, over-indexing the global average.
As per KuCoin, the finding unveils details about India’s promising talent pool that bears the potential to lead the world in the Web3 space. The youth is fuelling the future of Web3 in India and Indian Web3 professionals are younger than their global counterparts.
72% of #Web3 professionals in India are very happy with their careers so far, recognizing the industry’s benefits such as space for growth and innovation and better welfare. Additionally, 60% of surveyed Indian users who never worked in Web3 are very interested in exploring the career, mainly motivated by space for professional growth and a better salary package in the industry.
The report flagged the shortage of women-led communities, educational resources, and the stress of fast-paced industry as key challenges for Indian women to work or invest in Web3. As per the survey findings, Indian youth have huge potential in disrupting the Web3 space.
However, it has been noticed that there are fewer women-led Web3 communities as compared to male. The survey also shows that many women are hesitant to engage in Web3 due to perceived limited access to related educational resources and potential stress from the fast-paced industry.

India has over 450 active web3 startups – a rapidly growing ecosystem that has raised $1.3 bn funding till April 2022. This new generation of the web is expected to bring new avenues for websites and applications that are based on the utility offered by blockchain technology.
More than $3.8B has been poured into startups in the Web3 space — which includes the metaverse, cryptocurrencies, blockchain technology, and plenty of augmented reality features. The goal of Web3 is to move towards a decentralized internet, and away from larger tech players currently in control.
While global response to Web3 is still shaping up, India’s growing economy, demographic dividend, and exponential adoption of emerging technologies, across sectors, position the country to become one of the highest growth markets for Web3 globally. In the last two years, Indian Web3 startups have grown to a 450+ community, with 4 unicorns, raising $1.3 billion of total investments, until April 2022.
Between 2021-2022 alone, India registered over 170 new Web3 startups, yielding over 50% CAGR growth since 2015. With increasing confidence and interest from global investors, investments in Indian Web3 and Web 2.5 startups have also soared. The sector has witnessed robust funding across stages. New age incubators have pooled in over $587 million funding, as of Q32021.
Today, nearly 75,000 blockchain professionals are actively employed by the tech industry in India. Active collaboration between academia, startups, and corporates, and increasing number of blockchain-related government initiatives, will play a crucial role in driving the Web3 talent growth in the country, as per the report of NASSCOM.
Experts say, the technology underpinning Web3 has created a whitespace for innovation across domains and geographies. In order to fully understand and grasp the significance of the opportunity at hand, India must develop public awareness about this innovative technology
