Synthetic Frauds
Synthetic fraud is a type of identity theft in which criminals create fake identities using a mix of real and fake information. They may use stolen Social Security numbers, dates of birth, and addresses to create new credit accounts, open bank accounts, and even apply for loans.

Synthetic Fraud fuelled by “Frankenstein Identities” is the hardest to detect and quickly accounting for the highest percentage of fraud losses, primarily involving credit cards and unsecured lending portfolios.

Synthetic Fraud is quite different from the traditional identity theft, and cyber scammers create “Frankenstein Identities”. Instead of stealing a real identity, scammers create a fake identity using a real and/or unused social security number, combine the social security number with a fictitious name, driver’s license and physical address to form the “Frankenstein Identity”.

Global smartphone market shrinks 17%
Apple reclaimed the top spot in Q4 and achieved its highest quarterly market share ever at 25%, despite facing shrinking demand and manufacturing issues in Zhengzhou.

Samsung finished the quarter second with a 20% market share but was the largest vendor for the full year. Xiaomi retained third place despite its share falling to 11% in Q4, largely due to challenges in India. OPPO and VIVO rounded out the top five, taking 10% and 8% market shares respectively.

Smartphone vendors have struggled in a difficult macroeconomic environment throughout 2022. Q4 marks the worst annual and Q4 performance in a decade,” as per experts.

The channel is highly cautious with taking on new inventory, contributing to low shipments in Q4. Backed by strong promotional incentives from vendors and channels, the holiday sales season helped reduce inventory levels. While low-to-mid-range demand fell fast in previous quarters, high-end demand began to show weakness in Q4. The market’s performance in Q4 2022 stands in stark contrast to Q4 2021, which saw surging demand and easing supply issues.

Vendors will approach 2023 cautiously, prioritizing profitability and protecting market share. Vendors are cutting costs to adapt to the new market reality. Building strong partnerships with the channel will be important for protecting market shares as difficult market conditions for both channel partners and vendors can easily lead to strenuous negotiations.

As per Canalys, flat to marginal growth for the smartphone market in 2023, with conditions expected to remain tough. “Though inflationary pressures will gradually ease, the effects of interest rate hikes, economic slowdowns and an increasingly struggling labour market will limit the market’s potential.

Next fight to be over affordable 5G handsets
While the implementation of #5G in India is picking up speed, the demand for 5G enabled smartphones is going to spike, which could support low and mid-5G frequencies that are presently priced above Rs 15,000. Only 20 percent of smartphones sold in India are 5G enabled and the competition will be in the Rs 10k-15k segment.

India has recently concluded the 5G spectrum auction and the telcos now plan to roll it out in phases. It is being claimed that 5G will bring faster internet speeds with quicker downloads, smoother gaming experience, better video calling and an enhanced HD movie watching experience.

This ultra-fast connectivity - once reserved only for flagship phones - now starts to make its way to mid-range phones, and even budget low-segment devices. It appears that 2022 will be the year of 5G!

At present, even major OEMs are struggling to bring down the pricing of 5G smartphones with ongoing supply chain issues. 5G enabled smartphones are presently priced above Rs 15,000 and only 20 percent of smartphones sold in India are 5G enabled. Therefore, telcos will struggle to onboard subscribers onto their 5G network. Experts predict that 5G smartphone prices will go down during the festive season.

With #5Gnetworks yet to go live in India, phone makers have already started launching 5G phones in India. Most of the latest smartphones launched in India support a bunch of 5G bands and will be ready for super-fast internet speeds when 5G networks go live in the country.

Over the past few quarters, multiple brands including Samsung, Oppo, Vivo, Realme, Motorola and Poco, among others, have launched their range of 5G smartphones across various price points starting from Rs 12,999.

The subscription video on demand (SVOD) service revenue in India is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 15.5% from $1.3 billion in 2021 to $2.7 billion in 2026, driven by solid growth in SVOD subscriptions and an increase in unique SVOD household penetration, as per GlobalData.

India Subscription Video on Demand Forecast (Q4-2021)’ reveals that SVOD subscriptions in the country will increase at a CAGR of 16.2% during 2021-2026, driven by the increasing availability of affordable high-speed mobile internet, and a steady rise in household penetration of fixed broadband services, particularly high-speed fiber-to-the-home/building services, which enable the consumption of high-bandwidth OTT video content.

Moreover, the upcoming roll out of 5G networks will further aid in the growth of SVOD streaming services by facilitating a seamless streaming experience for consumers. The Indian SVOD market is on an accelerated growth path thanks to the availability of high-speed broadband services, growing smartphone penetration, and widespread popularity of OTT content among the younger population.

At the same time, the Global SVOD operators such as Disney+ Hotstar, Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, which have gained immense popularity in India, have been adopting innovative pricing plans with multi-device streaming options to expand their user base, and are investing heavily in developing premium original video content, especially in regional languages.

The result shows the Disney+ Hotstar platform is expected to hold the largest share of India’s #SVODservices market, in terms of subscriptions, through the 2021-2026 period. The growth can be attributed to the company’s wide, distinct pool of multilingual local and original content library, competitive pricing, and exclusive coverage rights to the Indian Premier League, one of the biggest sporting events in the country.

The global retail value of recorded-music sales will register a record year in 2022 with sales set to rise 9.8 per cent, to $41.4 billion (€39.7bn) from $37.7 billion in 2021, as per Omdia. Further growth is forecast over the next few years with the total ending 2026 at $50 billion. It is possible with the change in technology, music companies are becoming more innovative and trying to offer their best to customers. Remember those days when we used audio and video cassettes to listen or watch a movie. Today, with changing technology all these things have been replaced by CDs, DVDs, Blu-Ray disks etc. Subscriptions and advertising will be the big growth providers. Spending on subscriptions will jump 17 per cent this year, to $25 billion. By 2026, spending will total $33.6 billion and account for 67.1 per cent of global revenue. Income from digital music advertising will overtake spending on physical formats in 2024 and rise to $6.8 billion in 2026 as per advanced television. The continued shift from ownership of recorded-music to access means global retail sales will break annual records for the next few years and beyond. A report says, in 2020, the total revenue of the recorded music industry amounted to 23.1 billion dollars. Streaming made up 56 percent of this figure, bringing in 11.9 billion dollars globally.

Around the world, record companies are engaging at a very local level to support music cultures and bring on the development of emerging music ecosystems - championing local music and creating the opportunities for it to reach a global audience. According to industry body the IFPI, global recorded music revenues grew by 18.5% to $25.9bn. This compares to 7.4% growth in 2020, when the Covid-19 pandemic made its first (and hardest) impact on these revenues. It is a very important move in the journey of ‘Make in India’ for electronics. The journey started in 2020 with an aim of attracting large investments in the country that includes manufacturing of electronic components, semiconductors and mobile segments. India’s cabinet has approved a $6.37 billion (Rs 637 crore) plan to boost electronics manufacturing. The policy has set an ambitious target of increasing electronics manufacturing in the country to $400 billion by 2025. The new measures that come at a time when the world is battling the coronavirus epidemic and halting global supply chains is aimed at attracting large investments in the country that includes manufacturing of electronic components, semiconductors and mobile segments. The Scheme shall extend an incentive of 4% to 6% on incremental sales of goods manufactured in India and covered under target segments, to eligible companies, for a period of five subsequent years. The move is likely to give an aggressive push to ensure big companies such as Apple, Samsung, Huawei, Oppo and Vivo, besides contract manufacturers like Foxconn and Wistron bring their global supply chains to India and make the country an electronics hub.

Small bit-and-piece DDoS attacks (distributed denial of service) boomed by 233% in the first half of 2021, revealed Nexusguard researchers after gathered data from CSPs, honeypots, botnet scanning and research on traffic moving between attackers and their targets. As the pandemic carried on into 2021, hackers experimented with new attack patterns to avoid signature-based detection. In the first half of 2021, more than 99% of all DDoS attacks were smaller than 10Gbps.These small, nimble attacks can cripple communications service providers and Internet service providers if they leave detection to threshold or signature-based methods alone. Attackers are continuing to diversify their approaches with bit-and-piece attacks to bring down target networks and infrastructures. More than 95% of attacks were smaller than 1Gbps each, and a majority were launched using readily available and inexpensive DDoS-for-hire services. Rather than launching large bandwidth attacks against their targets, researchers noted that perpetrators chose to employ attacks using high packet-rate loads of small-sized traffic from DDoS-for-hire services, with the aim of evading DDoS mitigation detection systems.

The high level of intricacies behind communications service provider networks causes them to generally allow all types of traffic to pass through, which leads to smaller or spoofed types of attacks to strike undetected. Hence, Behavioural detection and mitigation approaches are strongly recommended for targeted networks since they can compare peacetime with battles and take a wider range of factors into consideration than anomalous thresholds or attack signatures. Smartphone firms set to ship 52 million devices

India’s ultra-premium smartphone market is witnessing intensified competition, among the mobile phone brands including Apple, Samsung and OnePlus vying with new entrants like Vivo for a greater share of consumer wallets in the festive season. The significant growth in these segments can be attributed to increased consumer spending on luxury/costly product segments, re-allocating spends from holidays, shopping, travel, dine-out etc, as per IDC. With this we can expect this momentum to only grow further in the upcoming festive season, driven by upgraders within premium and from the $500-$700 segment.
As per the Counterpoint Research, Apple, Samsung, OnePlus, and Vivo will drive the ultra-premium market, which is expected to witness more than 60% on-year growth in 2021. Competition will be very high in this segment, with Apple likely to corner the lion's share of around 40% in Q3. We have seen high shipments of iPhone 11 and 12 in August, and it will continue coupled with the iPhone 13 series. “Apple is filling channels.”

The report further says, due to supply constraints impacting the entire mobile phone ecosystem, premium players have tried to push in adequate stocks, including of older models, ahead of the festive season, market trackers said. They are also offering upfront discounts and cashbacks besides financing schemes and trade-in programs to attract buyers. The premium segment - over Rs 30,000 - contributes 7% by volume, but 23% by value in the overall smartphone space. Samsung’s market share in the segment is also expected to grow due to the launch of its foldable Galaxy Z series, which includes Z Flip 3 and Z Fold 3. In two to four years, the premium segment will continue to grow as rising incomes will help consumers be willing to pay a premium for meaningful innovation and upgrade their phones. Krishnamurthy Ella – the man behind developing the covid 19 vaccine, Covaxin was born in 1969 in an agricultural family to middle class parents. No one could have imagined his trajectory. Perhaps because of his background, Krishna wanted to study agriculture. His father wasn’t pleased - he told his son “Nobody becomes a farmer by just studying agriculture” . Unfazed, Krishna joined University of Agricultural sciences in Bangalore. His passion and hardwork earned him a gold medal. Unlike “ordinary” gold medalists, he wasn’t content to get a job. Nevertheless he supported himself after undergrad by working briefly in the agricultural division of Bayer Pharma. He longed for more. He got a rotary scholarship which enabled him to move to the US, to do his PhD in University of Wisconsin. The scholarship was the wind under his wings. There was no looking back. His speciality was molecular biology.

While in the US, he met Suchitra, an economics graduate and married her. Average Indians in the US would dream of a green card for themselves and Dr Krishna dreamt for millions of people - freedom from diseases. His solution - low cost vaccine for neglected diseases. He wanted his dreams to become reality in India. He started Bharat Biotech in Hyderabad in the newly formed Genome Valley. The first product was caesium free Hepatitis B vaccine - the first in the world. His work caught the attention of Bill & Melinda Gates foundation - whose funds enabled Bharat Biotech to develop Rotavirus vaccine and conjugate Typhoid vaccine - again for the first time in the world.
