India does not have enough lithium reserves for manufacturing lithium-ion batteries and almost all electric vehicles in the country run on batteries imported mostly from China. “Lithium content in a cell is less than 4 percent (including electrolytes). So major portion of the cells for localisation. Usage of lithium-ion batteries in electric vehicles in the country are imported mostly from China. There have been at least four incidents of two-wheeler vehicles, powered by lithium-ion batteries bursting into flames. The question is what are Li-ion batteries, and how do they work? What caused these vehicles to catch fire? 90% of the world’s manufacturing of Advanced Chemistry Cell (ACC) is done in China. India doesn’t have a manufacturing facility for lithium-ion batteries and, as a result, all manufacturers import cells and battery packs. Indian original equipment manufacturers need government support for making lithium cells for the long term. Securing lithium supply could help in making batteries at a globally competitive price, with the potential to reduce the price of EVs. India is already the number one manufacturer and market for two and three wheelers in the world and, hence, this presents the opportunity to lead in the EV segment too. India has become one of the largest markets for electric vehicles. But it has not developed core manufacturing capability and has been a peripheral assembler where over 50% of the critical components have to be imported into the country for production. Replacing Chinese products is easier said than done, however, in the coming days, the import burden and technology dependence is going to ease in the coming days. The path breaking innovation by IIT-Delhi along with Indian technocrats for bringing Aluminium ion batteries could replace the Lithium batteries in the coming days.

#Visa and #Mastercard are suspending their Russian operations, as per a statement and they would no longer handle card operations pertaining to sanctioned Russian banks. They are now extending that to all card issuers and merchant processors in Russia. With this there will be a big impact on foreigners who won’t be able to use their Visa or Mastercard cards for purchases in the country, whether online or in person. Russian cardholders are still able to use these cards for purchases in Russia, but their transactions will travel over other networks, mainly Russia's homegrown payments system, Mir. Mir is a Russian payment system for electronic fund transfers established by the Central Bank of Russia under a law adopted on 1 May 2017. The system is operated by the Russian National Card Payment System [ru], a wholly owned subsidiary of the Central Bank of Russia. Russian cardholders won’t likely be able to use their Visa- or Mastercard-branded cards outside the country. “All transactions initiated with Visa cards issued in Russia will no longer work outside the country,” Visa said in a statement.
Western financial institutions have moved rapidly to sever ties with Russia, in some cases going well beyond sanctions on the country’s biggest banks. Their moves have hobbled the country’s economy and cut off Russian citizens and companies from the global financial system. On the surface it looks like a brilliant move to cripple financial transactions of Russia. The government’s stand on data localization is a way to boost growth and help law enforcement access data for investigations, but some measures are far more effective than others. Data localization refers to various policy measures that restrict data flows by limiting the physical storage and processing of data within a given jurisdiction’s boundaries. Multiple countries have adopted localization policies to combat multiple concerns over the free flow of data. This is primarily due to the perceived economic benefits of processing Indian consumer data, and difficulties accessing personal data for national security and law enforcement purposes. A vital question, then, is whether any particular variant of data localization would help the Indian government meet its multiple stated objectives for considering such a policy course.
The central bank has banned Mastercard indefinitely from issuing new debit, credit or prepaid cards to customers in the South Asian market, it’s a battle over local data storage rules in the country. All the payment data has to be stored on servers exclusively in India. This way, regulators would have "unfettered supervisory access" to transaction details. The pandemic has heightened the importance of the supply chain and the need to protect it from cybercrime. Supply chain attacks have long been a concern in cyber security circles as it can be difficult to enforce or prescribe cyber security measures for suppliers and partners. Secondly, there is high growth of ransomware in the education sector, which looks at the extent and impact of ransomware attacks on educational institutions worldwide during 2020 and continuing in 2021. Education, together with retail, faced the highest level of ransomware attacks during 2020, with 44% of organizations hit (compared to 37% across all industry sectors). For educational institutions, the financial impact of a ransomware attack in 2020 was crippling. The total bill for rectifying a ransomware attack in the education sector, considering downtime, people time, device cost, network cost, lost opportunity, ransom paid, and more, was, on average, $2.73 million – the highest across all sectors surveyed, and 48% above the global average.
The Sophos report states, over half (58%) of the education organizations hit by ransomware said the attackers had succeeded in encrypting their data and over a third (35%) of those with encrypted data gave in to the attackers’ demands and paid the ransom. Only the energy, oil/gas and utilities (43%), and local government (42%) sectors were more likely to pay and the average ransom payment was $1,12,435 (lower than the global average of $1,70,404) . However, those who paid recovered on average only around two-thirds (68%) of their data, leaving almost a third inaccessible; and just 11% got all their encrypted data back. Of those institutions that were not hit with ransomware last year (55% of respondents), the majority (61%) expect to be targeted in the future. Cloud security continues to be a significant concern for cybersecurity professionals as 96% are moderately concerned and 32% are extremely concerned.A Cloud Security Report survey conducted by Security Insiders found that cloud security concerns among cybersecurity professionals remains high as the adoption of public cloud computing continues to surge in the wake of the pandemic and the resulting massive shift to remote work. Organizations continue to rapidly migrate workloads from data centres to the cloud, and the trend has been accelerating during the recent Covid pandemic. The report indicates that 33% of organizations are running more than half of their workloads in the cloud today, and that number is set to rise to 56% in the next 12–18 months.
At the same time, the Multi-cloud adoption is very much the norm as organizations were found to be operating in an expanded and diverse digital landscape. 71% of organizations are pursuing a hybrid or multi-cloud strategy as cloud is the preferred choice for integration of multiple services, scalability, or business continuity reasons. 76% of organizations are using two or more cloud providers and hybrid still accounts for more than one-third of the deployments. Among the key barriers to faster cloud adoption, survey participants mentioned lack of visibility (53%), lack of control (46%), lack of staff resources or expertise (39%), and high cost (35%) as the most significant negative factors. However, misconfiguration of cloud security remains the biggest security risk according to 67% of cybersecurity professionals in the survey.
