The edtech companies are the worst-hit among all startups as funding dries up because of the recession, among other reasons, forcing them to lay off employees.
According to a survey, Indian startups have already laid off nearly 10,000 employees this year—about one-third of those are from the EdTech industry. In many cases, these are teachers and educators that have been working from home during the pandemic, when the prospects of startups were booming.
This sudden increase in competition led to a number of other changes in the digital market. Owing to the increased number of advertisements for similar products, the cost per conversion escalated multiple times.
This drastically increased the cost of investment in the Edtech business as the margin between investment and profit shrank to become thinner. This led to incurring losses in most of these companies.
Indian EdTech startups were able to raise $4.7 billion in 2021, up from $2.2 billion in 2020, making EdTech the third-most funded start-up category, after e-commerce at $10.7 billion and FinTech at $8 billion. Edtech companies broke all records in terms of fundraising in 2020 and 2021.
Right from pre-product to late-stage, startups across stages managed to mop up back-to-back rounds without any hassle. Byju’s, Unacademy, Vedantu, upGrad, Eruditus, Classplus, BrightChamps, Cuemath, LEAP, and Teachmint emerged at the top of the list of startups raising money during 2020 and 2021.
Consumers have reported that certain edtech platforms are indulging in predatory marketing practices and unethical conduct, which include auto-debiting course fees from parents despite parents stating their wish to discontinue the course. This led to the government issuing a warning against such practices of some edtech platforms while mulling a common policy to regulate the industry last year.

It is estimated that the total #FixedWirelessAccess (FWA) broadband subscriptions is going to climb to around 462 million by 2030 from roughly 75 million in 2021. 5G FWA will drive the bulk of the growth beyond 2025 replacing 4G FWA connections that will be still prevalent in some markets across MEA, developing Asia and Latin America until 2024, as per counterpoint research survey.
Experts say by the end of 2021, only one out of every three households around the world (excluding China) had access to fixed broadband. And only 25% of those households enjoyed speeds greater than 100 Mbps. With the growing work-from-home and hybrid working and learning trends, a stable, fast and high-capacity connection has become imperative.
“In light of that, we are seeing a significant push from operators and even governments to prioritize national broadband initiatives with #5G FWA becoming integral to their 5G rollout strategies. For example, the launch of T-Mobile 5G Home Internet service in the US is going to provide high-speed broadband across the USA trying to bridge gaps and challenge cable monopolies. Similarly, Optus in Australia has been aggressively rolling out FWA services since the beginning of 2021. Furthermore, several MNOs across Europe and the Middle East are seeing rising adoption for 5G FWA”.
Speaking about the 5G FWA momentum and outlook, the expert further reveals that, “The US is currently the single biggest 5G FWA market, with both Verizon and T-Mobile being bullish on 5G FWA with mmWave rollouts ideal for dense urban connectivity, and sub-6GHz spectrum driving broader coverage and above average throughput speeds. European operators, especially in the UK and Spain are still pushing to increase fiber broadband infrastructure, thus delaying the rollout of 5G FWA networks. A study by Citrix Systems shows hybrid work is here to stay and in this new world of work, delivering a unified, secure, and simplified work experience will be key to success. Many companies viewed remote work as a short-term solution to the pandemic, they now recognize it must be part of their permanent workforce and cost management strategies. When asked how they would prefer to work post-pandemic 52% of respondents said they want a hybrid model where they can choose to work remotely or from the office each day; 16% indicated they have no interest in returning to the office and would prefer a permanently remote role; 45% noted that if they were to change jobs, they would only accept a role which offered flexible and remote work options; and nearly 75% said they would likely consider relocating to a different city if they could perform their role to the same level without commuting to a place of work.
With a lack of boundaries between their work and personal lives and no commute to manage, two-thirds of employees polled say they are working the same or more hours. And while they remain productive, many are struggling to do so. The study found that 41% of employees cited distractions in their home environment, 28% say they lack appropriate technologies and applications to get work done and 36% feel isolated and out of touch with colleagues. As many companies have learned through the pandemic, digital workspaces are an efficient and effective way to do this, as they: (i) Unify work – whether at home, on plane or in an office, employees have consistent and reliable access to all the resources they need to be productive across any work channel, device or location; (ii) Secure work – contextual access and app security, ensure applications and information remain secure – no matter where work happens and (iii) Simplify work – Intelligence capabilities like machine learning, virtual assistan
