Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz governed the Republic of Cuba as Prime Minister from 1959 to 1976 and then as President from 1976 to 2008. The revolutionary leader retired from the public eye in 2006 after an emergency surgery to treat intestinal bleeding.
A Marxist-Leninist and Cuban nationalist, Fidel Castro also served as the First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba from 1961 until 2011.
The news of Fidel's death was announced by his brother and Cuban president Raul Castro on national tv. According to Raul, Fidel had died at 10:29 PM (09:00 AM IST).
