1929 में पहले ऑस्कर पुरस्कार समारोह का आयोजन रूजवेल्ट होटल में 270 लोगों की मौजूदगी में किया गया था। फ़िल्म निर्देशक सत्यजीत रे ऑस्कर जीतने वाले पहले भारतीय थे। ऑस्कर पुरस्कार की अलग-अलग श्रेणियों के लिए दुनियाभर की फिल्में शामिल की जाती हैं।
1933 में प्रसिद्ध कथाकार और उपन्यासकार गुलशेर ख़ां शानी का जन्म हुआ था। सांप और सीढ़ी, फूल तोड़ना मना है, एक लड़की की डायरी और काला जल आदि इनकी प्रमुख रचनाएं हैं। शानी साहित्य अकादमी की पत्रिका 'समकालीन भारतीय साहित्य' और 'साक्षात्कार' के संपादक भी थे।
1943 में वॉरसॉ में 28 दिनों से यहूदी बस्तियों में चल रही लड़ाई ख़त्म हुई थी। अपनी इस कार्रवाई के तहत जर्मन सैनिकों ने यहूदियों को रेलवे स्टेशन की तरफ़ भेजना शुरू किया, ताकि उन्हें यातना शिविर भेजा जा सके।
1974 में इज़रायल के लड़ाकू विमानों ने सात फ़िलस्तीनी शरणार्थी कैंपों और दक्षिणी लेबनान के गांवों पर बम बरसाये थे । इस हमलें में कम से कम 27 लोग मारे गए थे और 138 घायल हुए थे।

सन् 1902 में पहली साइंस फ़िक्शन फ़िल्म "ए ट्रिप टू द मून" रिलीज़ हुई थी। फ़्रेंच भाषा में बनी इस मूक फ़िल्म का निर्देशन जॉर्ज मेलिएस ने किया था । चौदह मिनट की इस ब्लैक एंड व्हाइट फ़िल्म को उस समय की लंबी फ़िल्म माना गया था। इस फ़िल्म में खगोलशास्त्रियों के एक समूह की कहानी दिखाई गई थी, जो चांद पर जाकर उसकी सतह पर रिसर्च करते हैं।
1921 में बॉलीवुड के मशहूर फ़िल्म निर्देशक सत्यजीत रे का जन्म हुआ था। यथार्थवादी धारा की फ़िल्मों को नई दिशा देने के अलावा साहित्य, चित्रकला जैसी अन्य विधाओं में भी सत्यजीत रे ने अपनी प्रतिभा का परिचय दिया था। साहित्य और बॉलीवुड में अपने योगदान के लिए सत्यजीत रे को भारत रत्न, पद्म विभूषण, दादासाहब फालके पुरस्कार से नवाज़ा गया था।
सन् 1975 में पद्मजा नायडू का निधन हुआ था। पद्मजा ने अपना सारा जीवन भारत के हित के लिए समर्पित कर दिया था। 21 वर्ष की आयु में पद्मजा नायडू को हैदराबाद में 'भारतीय राष्ट्रीय कांग्रेस' की संयुक्त संस्थापिका चुना गया था। वर्ष 1962 में पद्मजा नायडू को 'पद्म विभूषण' पुरस्कार से सम्मानित किया गया था।

सन् 1564 में अंग्रेज़ी साहित्य के महान कवि और नाटककार विलियम शेक्सपीयर का निधन हुआ था। शेक्सपीयर ने 38 नाटक, 154 सॉनेट और दो लंबी कविताएं लिखी हैं। शेक्सपीयर की काफ़ी आलोचना हुई और उन पर संभ्रांत लेखकों ने ख़ुद को बेहतर साबित करने का आरोप लगाया। हैमलेट, किंग लेयर, ओथेलो, मैकबेथ जैसी रचनाएं अंग्रेज़ी साहित्य में शेक्सपीयर के नायाब नाटक हैं।
सन् 1858 में बिहार की ओर से प्रथम स्वतंत्रता संग्राम का नेतृत्व करने वाले महान क्रांतिकारी बाबू कुंवर सिंह का निधन हुआ था। बाबू कुंवर सिंह ने रीवा के ज़मींदारों को एकत्र किया और उन्हें अंग्रेज़ों से युद्ध के लिए तैयार किया। लड़ाई के दौरान अंग्रेज़ों की गोली लगने पर कुंवर सिंह ने अपना हाथ काटकर गंगा नदी को समर्पित कर दिया था।
सन् 1984 में वैज्ञानिकों ने एड्स के वायरस का पता लगाया और अमेरिका की स्वास्थ्य मंत्री माग्रेट हेकलर ने एड्स वायरस खोज की घोषणा की थी।
सन् 1985 में कोल्ड ड्रिंक्स कंपनी कोकाकोला ने 99 वर्ष बाज़ार में रहने के बाद एक नए फ़ार्मूले के साथ नया कोक मार्केट में उतारा और तीन महीने के विरोध के बाद इस कोक को वापस भी ले लिया गया।
