Four-time Olympic champion Ben Ainslie has led tributes to Andrew Simpson after the Beijing gold medal-winning sailor died in an accident off the coast of California.
Simpson was training for the America's Cup when his vessel flipped over in San Francisco Bay, trapping him underneath for 10 minutes. The 36-year-old, who won a gold medal in the star class in 2008 and a silver at London 2012 last year, was brought to shore but doctors were unable to save him.
A statement from Sir Ben Ainslie's Oracle team read: "Today is a sad day for all of us in the sailing community. Andrew Simpson was a great person, a terrific sailor, and a good friend to all of our team.
"Our thoughts are with his family and the entire Artemis team. He will be dearly missed."
Olympic silver medallist windsurfer Nick Dempsey tweeted: "Going to miss you Bart", while Luke Patience, who took silver at the London Games, said: "Devastated. Bart, you are a true inspiration."
Double world match racing champion Simon Shaw added: "Today we lost a courageous sailor. A true friend from school, till now, my heart is with his family."
Sir Clive Woodward, British Olympic Association director of sport at London 2012, was another to pay tribute. He said: "Totally shocked to hear Olympic star Andrew 'Bart' Simpson died after Swedish America's cup catamaran capsizes - thoughts with his family.

Simpson was part of Sweden's Artemis team taking part in training for the America's Cup off the California coast.
The British Olympic sailor Andrew Simpson died on Thursday after his team's ultra-modern yacht capsized in the San Francisco bay and trapped him underwater during training for the America's Cup.
The 72-foot Artemis catamaran tipped over at 1.15pm local time, plunging its 13-strong crew into the water and trapping Simpson under the vessel's platform for about 10 minutes.
Rescuers pulled Simpson, 36, into a support boat and an officer from the San Francisco police department's marine unit tried to resuscitate him. He was declared dead about 20 minutes later, said San Francisco fire chief Joanne Hayes-White.
Simpson won a gold medal in the 2008 Beijing Olympics as a crew member in the star class, and he also took silver last year at the London Games.
"The entire team is devastated by what happened," said Artemis chief executive Paul Cayard, a sailing world champion and America's Cup veteran. "Our heartfelt condolences are with Andrew's wife and family."
One other crew member was hurt but his condition was not said to be serious. The rest of the crew escaped unharmed and was taken to its nearby base at Alameda, where members were said to be in tears.

Friends and colleagues pay tribute to Olympic gold medal winning sailor Andrew Simpson, who died when his boat capsized during training for the Americas Cup.
Simpson, 36, was sailing with the Swedish Artemis Racing team in San Francisco Bay when the yacht turned over and trapped him underneath, his team said on Thursday night.
The sailor, known as "Bart", was in a crew of 11 when the 72ft vessel overturned at 12:30pm local time (8:30pm GMT). The cause of the accident is so far unclear.
Simpson was trapped underwater for about 10 minutes, Artemis said, and doctors both in the water and on the shore could not revive him after he was freed from the wreckage.
Paul Cayard, Artemis' chief executive, said the entire team was "devastated" by what had happened. He said: "We obviously had a tragic day today on the bay and our thoughts and prayers are with Bart Simpson's - Andrew Simpson's - family, his wife and kids, and also with the rest of the team-mates.
"It is a shocking experience to go through and we have a lot to deal with in the next few days in terms of assuring everybody's well-being.
"The boat itself is under control, but it is certainly not the first of our concerns. We are focused on the people. That is what we are working with and on and we will give you more information when we are able to."
