Google on Wednesday celebrated the 100th birth anniversary of British archaeologist, Mary Leakey by putting up a doodle on its home page.
The doodle features Mary Leakey at an archaeological site engrossed in excavation. Like in reality, the doodle has two Dalmatians running around her. Mary, a known animal-lover, was generally accompanied in the field by three to four Dalmatians.
Interestingly, the doodle also features one of Leakey's major discoveries, "the Laetoli footprints", and some tools used in archaeology.
The first and last two letters of the word Google - G, O and L, E -are seen in the background while Mary Leakey and the Dalmatians replace the second O and second G of the word.
In 1978, six years after her husband's death, Mary Leakey made her most important discovery - footprints frozen for 3.5 million years in volcanic mud. Her discovery revealed that early hominids walked upright much earlier than previously thought.
Born on February 6 1913, Mary Leakey, despite the lack of formal archaeological training, is widely known for discovering the first fossilised Proconsul skull, an extinct ape now believed to be ancestral to humans, and the robust Zinjanthropus skull at Olduvai Gorge.

Google, today, commemorates Mary Leakey's 100th birthday anniversary with an attractive doodle. Leakey, a renowned British archaeologist and anthropologist, was born on February 6, 1913 in London, England and is well known for her significant discoveries and exploring the fossils of the ancient hominines. She collaborated with her husband Louis Leakey through a large part of her career and her three sons also entered the same field. She died on December 9, 1996 at the age of 83.
Leakey's discoveries included the fossilised Proconsul skull, an extinct ape that is believed to be ancestor to humans. Another discovery was that of the Zinjanthropus skull, an early hominin, at Olduvai Gorge. She is also credited with developing a system to classify stone tools found at Olduvai as well as discovering Laetoli footprints. Over the course of her career, Leakey wrote four books.
Her passion towards unearthing the fossils was somewhat influenced by John Frere, an antiquarian, and Sheppard Frere, an archaeologist. Moreover, she had a chance to accompany Elie Peyrony during an excavation at Les Eyzies, where she came across collection scrapers and other tools from the dump. It is believed that at this phase her interest in prehistory gradually sparked.

Today's Google doodle celebrates the 100th birth anniversary of noted British archaeologist Mary Leakey.
The doodle on the search engine's home page shows a bespectacled Leakey working at an excavation site.
Leakey was born on February 6, 1913 and is famous for discovering the first fossilised Proconsul skull which belonged to an extinct ape believed to be ancestral to humans.
Mary was fluent in French and was deeply inspired by her painter father Erskine Edward Nicol who specialised in watercolour landscapes.
It was during the family's travels to various places that young Leakey developed an interest for Etymology. As a child, she often indulged in long walks with her father where they would explore new places and have extensive discussions later.
Leakey has written four books on excavation and her discovery, of which the book titled Excavations at Njoro River Cave, was co-authored with her husband Louis.
Leakey died on December 9, 1996 at the age 83 in Kenya.

Mary Leakey (6 February 1913 -- 9 December 1996) was a British archaeologist and anthropologist, who discovered the first fossilized Proconsul skull, an extinct ape now believed to be ancestral to humans, and also discovered the robust Zinjanthropus skull at Olduvai Gorge. For much of her career she worked together with her husband, Louis Leakey, in Olduvai Gorge, uncovering the tools and fossils of ancient hominines. She developed a system for classifying the stone tools found at Olduvai. She also discovered the Laetoli footprints. In 1960 she became director of excavation at Olduvai and subsequently took it over, building her own staff. After the death of her husband she became a leading palaeoanthropologist, helping to establish the Leakey tradition by training her son, Richard, in the field.

Mary Leakey is being honored with a Google doodle in parts of the world where it is already February 6th (like Australia).
Leakey was a British archaeologist and anthropologist, who discovered the first fossilized Proconsul (extinct ape believed to be ancestral to humans) skull. She also discovered the Zinjanthropus (Paranthropus, a genus of extinct hominins) skull.
Leakey was born on February 6, 1913, which obviously, makes this her 100th birthday. She died in 1996 at the age of 83. Here’s a look at Google’s Knowledge Panel for Leakey:
Google has run a number of other doodles already this week in different parts of the world. There were at least four on Monday, including the Canadian penny, Sri Lanka Independence Day, Josef Kajetán Tyl and Manuel Álvarez Bravo.
