A Billion & One Voices: The Story of Budi & Juglal
Budi and Juglal never had any means to support themselves ever. No land no oxen, not even water. They are marginal farmers who work as labour on small farms while their children used to play all day here and there. Because of the RTE launched by the UPA led Congress Government they managed to put their children in school. Now they are happy that the children are learning something. They feel education will open the door of opportunities for them.
The Congress led UPA government passed the Right To Education Act (RTE) in 2009 that makes education a Constitutional Right for every citizen. It has spent 8.7 times more than the previous government on Sarva Shiskha Abhiyaan.

The story of Vijay & Anjali Das shows us how political parties actually effect the common man of India. Vijay and Anjali tells us they think well of a political party when it does more work for the poor. Their experience so far has not been good. They have to pay one rupee everyday to the Trinamool party shop committee or else they are beaten and face other problems like electricity being cut off. The fear of being beaten is what keeps them quiet and they pay whatever is asked.
Anjali says with the Trinamool in power, Bengal has become very unsafe for women. Every second day they hear stories of rape which makes her scared to send her daughter out of the house. In a situation like this how will anyone be able to educate their daughters she asks.
It is the work the Congress party does that sets them apart from other political parties. Indira Gandhi did a lot for the poor. A woman who always kept her word. Vijay and Anjali want a party that will not create unrest. A party that will let them eat 2 square meals peacefully. They want Rahul Gandhi to win. They feel it will be better for the country if he comes to power and that's why they would only vote for the Congress.

This is a story of a simple man Yadav Ji who came to Delhi in 1989. His parents passed away when he was very young. Yadav has never been to school despite his wish to study in a school. But with his economic conditions where he had to work from a very young age, education was an impossible dream.
A dream that he is now living through his daughter. His daughter is in the 10th grade. He wants to educate her as much as he can, he wants her to develop some skills which will help her in future.
Yadav is very happy with the Congress led-UPA government. He has been supporting the Congress party for the last 20 years and feels proud that the government has done a very good job in the development of education, metro, etc.

Rekha was used to staying at home and doing all the household chores. The outside world seemed scary to her. But as luck would have it she got an opportunity to replace the Aanganwadi worker who left the village and went for it.
She has now been with Aanganwadi for 11 years. At Aanganwadi children are fed and given basic education. Aanganwadi's have played an important part in eradication of polio from our country. Workers like Rekha are ones who convince parents why these two drops are necessary. Now after so many years of hard work they have reached a point where parents come on their own for polio drops.
She further talks about her family who has always supported her. Had it not been for their support she would not have come this far. She started with the salary of Rs. 700 and now earns Rs. 5000. She is thankful to the government and now not so afraid of the outside world.

Sindhuram was living in Bhakatsapori, Assam since 1995. In 1998, their village was struck by floods of unimaginable proportion. Everything was lost. All the embankments were destroyed and he ended up living in 'chang-ghars'. Sidhuram saw an upside to this natural calamity. He says "when the water receded, lots of fertilizing minerals were left behind". And thus began his journey as a farmer.
Today he is a sugarcane farmer and a Jaggery trader. He got into sugarcane farming as thought it would be more profitable for him. His jaggery brings him better rates because it is packaged well.
The Government too came forward with useful suggestions and advice. They got him money from Kamalabari ATMA Fund to cover his labeling and packaging cost. 34 farmers were able to get loan from Assam Grameen Vikas bank. Ravinder Kumar hails from Himachal Pradesh but is currently settled in Delhi. A truck driver by profession he drives his truck from Delhi to Sonepat. Once a year Ravinder takes a break for 6 weeks to visit his family in Himachal. But even on his break he doesn't sit idle, he works at shoring up the mountain roads.
He tells us when the BJP was in power every time he or his village people would have to meet the minister, they would often hear the minister complain saying "You did not vote for us". Ravinder feels that it's the common mans right to vote for who so ever he wishes for. Leaders cannot go around asking why did you vote for X, Y & Z.
Rahul Gandhi he feels is a good leader who goes into the villages asking people about their problems. He is the one man who would even walk alone to people's homes and directly talk to them about the hardships they face. Ravinder says Rahul Gandhi never neglects anyone and not once has he asked anyone in his village "Who did you vote for?" A true leader who when says he'll do something, actually does it.

The story of a nation's metamorphosis is best narrated by its people -- people who have lived the change and seen despair transform into hope, optimism and happiness. Fifteen years back Mukhtadir earned a paltry Rs 2,000 every month. Today, he earns five times that amount. Mukhtadir takes care of his family and funds the higher education of his younger brother who is pursuing civil engineering in Delhi.
"Fifteen years back what was Delhi? There was very little work, salaries were less, and there was no job security," he says. "Today, I earn Rs 10,000 and have a permanent job. What more do you need."
In his view, India's development is evident in the way Metro has transformed public transport in Delhi and its suburbs like Gurgaon.
He feels, critics of India's development see things in isolation and overlook facts. In the last ten years India has recorded high growth rate despite a debilitating global recession. "People talk about high inflation. But they forget that if prices have gone up, so have salaries," says Mukhtadir.
Mukhtadir's voice is the voice of India, the voice of India's conscience. And it reverberates from the heart of every Indian.

Shruti Kediya is a journalist from Karnataka who calls herself apolitical. The thing she likes most about Rahul Gandhi is that, his heart is in the right place. She feels he has a vision for India and few things are very prominent in his vision like women empowerment, youth empowerment or even RTI.
Rajat an engineer by profession always thought politicians never do anything good. But then something made him go on the field and he discovered that its not so easy as there are lots other factors involved. He spoke to people from different economic and social strata, figured out their problems and what has been done about it. He says "In 2-3 years youth is going to be the major population in this country." And in that country if youth doesn't get involved in politics then there is no point.
Uditi an architect has seen a tremendous change in her city. She says when people want to discuss politics in their living rooms that means, people are getting more aware and want to create change in the country.

Runumai Payeng Doli lives in Majuli, Assam. She has two children and her husband runs a shop. Earlier life was tough as she had to go out very far to make ends meet. Her life changed in 2007, when she got a job with the Aanganwadi in her village.
She gets up at 5 in the morning and after finishing all her household chores, leaves for school. She is a teacher at Anganwadi and says 'she loves spending time with children'. She doesn't have to travel far as the school is just round the corner from her home. Today she leads a comfortable life and is able to run her house smoothly.
Aanganwadi provide supplementary nutrition, non-formal pre-school education, nutrition and health education, immunization, health check-up etc in the village. Dilip works as a Quality Analyst in an IT company in Kerala. IT sector he says is once again on a boom now. Increase in revenues results in good pay. Dilip feels the UPA led Congress has done good work in the last 10 years. Especially the Right to Information Act(RTI) which helps people like him understand what's happening in the political system. In his words "RTI has got more transparency in our system". Even in his own company he has little information about what's happening at the top level. RTI can help him here as well.
Dilip feels India needs economic stability. And Congress is the only party that can keep up this momentum of boom in the IT sector.
