Budi and Juglal never had any means to support themselves ever. No land no oxen, not even water. They are marginal farmers who work as labour on small farms while their children used to play all day here and there. Because of the RTE launched by the UPA led Congress Government they managed to put their children in school. Now they are happy that the children are learning something. They feel education will open the door of opportunities for them.
The Congress led UPA government passed the Right To Education Act (RTE) in 2009 that makes education a Constitutional Right for every citizen. It has spent 8.7 times more than the previous government on Sarva Shiskha Abhiyaan.

Fifteen years back Mukhtadir earned a paltry Rs 2,000 every month. Today, he earns five times that amount. Mukhtadir takes care of his family and funds the higher education of his younger brother who is pursuing civil engineering in Delhi.
"Fifteen years back what was Delhi? There was very little work, salaries were less, and there was no job security," he says. "Today, I earn Rs 10,000 and have a permanent job. What more do you need."
In his view, India's development is evident in the way Metro has transformed public transport in Delhi and its suburbs like Gurgaon.
He feels, critics of India's development see things in isolation and overlook facts. In the last ten years India has recorded high growth rate despite a debilitating global recession. "People talk about high inflation. But they forget that if prices have gone up, so have salaries," says Mukhtadir.

Runumai Payeng Doli lives in Majuli, Assam. She has two children and her husband runs a shop. Earlier life was tough as she had to go out very far to make ends meet. Her life changed in 2007, when she got a job with the Aanganwadi in her village.
She gets up at 5 in the morning and after finishing all her household chores, leaves for school. She is a teacher at Anganwadi and says 'she loves spending time with children'. She doesn't have to travel far as the school is just round the corner from her home. Today she leads a comfortable life and is able to run her house smoothly.
Aanganwadi provide supplementary nutrition, non-formal pre-school education, nutrition and health education, immunization, health check-up etc in the village. Shamshuddin Ansari is a gold medal wrestling champion in 1974, from Uttar Pradesh. That got him a job in the railways with the salary of Rs. 400. But his love for weaving made him quit his secure job and join his family business of weaving sarees.
He faced a lot of hardship doing what he loved. He says "Since the year 2000 the government was not very supportive of artisans." Because of which his work started to collapse. From making 25 sarees they were down to making only 5. He used borrow money just to make ends meet. He says " It became difficult to educate our children or even feed the family."
Then things started to change, he started getting support from the government. Looms, silk, yarn, thread they got everything at subsidized rates and his work picked up again. Now he lives a comfortable life. He goes on to say " Due to the subsidy the government provides the price of silk thread has gone down." Like a proud father he tells how his son under his guidance has also won a national award for a benarasi saree.
The Congress led UPA Government announced "Revival, Reform and Restructuring Package for Handloom Sector" of rs. 3884 crore.

In fact, he didn't even have his own place to live.
The UPA led Congress Government launched the Mahatma Gandhi Gramin Basti Yojna in 2008-9 that provided 100 sq. yards residential plots to eligible SC, BC and BPL families living in Haryana. This is the first time the state directly gave land to the people.
This has brought a huge change in lives of people like Abdul Hameed. He is thankful to god that his tough days are over. Today he has his own land and lives a very comfortable life.
