Pushpavalli Ramaswamy from Mysore, Karnataka is an ex Deputy Mayor. She contested elections for the first time in 2001, and won the very first time. There after, she was made the Deputy Mayor of Mysore city from Congress. She believes Mysore is a heritage city and one should do every thing to preserve our beautiful heritage.
Pushpavalli mainly works on women centric issues like dowry or marital dispute, in fact she also used to council the couples if required. She helped women get their ration card which according to her is the main problem in Mysore. She also helped with their old age and widow pension.
Her day would start at 6 in the morning where she would visit the people who called her with different problems. She would listen and understand their issues and try and solve their problems then and there. This made the people very happy and even now if they have any problems she is the first person they call.
Pushpavalli says we should always be in touch with the common people. She says sometimes even if you can't solve their problems they still feel happy that someone is there trying.

She again took some money from the self help group and got her son the license to drive a truck. Today, the son is married and happy. Now she's planning to get posh room made for the new daughter-in-law.

Rashida from Sikri, Amethi has seen the toughest of times. Left by her husband for another woman she was faced with a loss of status and money. Her father died, soon after her younger brother died and the entire responsibility of her family came on her shoulders.
When her daughter reached the marriageable age, she knocked on all the doors for help. Her elder brother turned his back on her, so did her in-laws. No one was willing to help her with the expense of her daughters marriage. A few women in her village suggested she join the 'Self Help Group' and that transformed her life completely.
The women in the Self Help Group taught her how to plant the basic crops. The group also helped her borrow money to start her own general store. Now with the money Rashida earns she is able to educate her youngest daughter in an English medium school in Lucknow. She wants to fulfill her daughters dream of becoming a doctor or district magistrate. The woman who didn't know the ABC... is now learning how to read. She says "You are blind until you are able to read for yourself."

Raseedan belongs to Mehraula Village, in Haryana. She lives with her three daughters and two sons. Life was very good till her husband a wrestler, employed by the government was alive. With his untimely death she had to leave Delhi and life became tough. Initially, she earned a living raising some livestock. But that didn't go too far and soon she had to take work up as a labourer to make ends meet.
The Congress led UPA Government launched the mid-day meal scheme, that not only benefited the children but also provided lakhs of women like Raseedan a livelihood. She has now been with the school for a year.
Today, Raseedan is a happy woman who loves her job and never wants to stop working. She says "The financial freedom that this job gives me makes me very happy." She wants to provide a comfortable and secure life for her children who have lived through hard times.
By 2011-12 Congress-led UPA government allocated Rs 9,890 crore for the mid-day meal scheme. That is 7.5 times the budget allocated by the NDA government (Rs 1,325 crore) in 2003-04.

From making 25 sarees they were down to making only 5. He used borrow money just to make ends meet. He says " It became difficult to educate our children or even feed the family."
Then things started to change, he started getting support from the government. Looms, silk, yarn, thread they got everything at subsidized rates and his work picked up again. Now he lives a comfortable life. He goes on to say " Due to the subsidy the government provides the price of silk thread has gone down." Like a proud father he tells how his son under his guidance has also won a national award for a benarasi saree.
The Congress led UPA Government announced "Revival, Reform and Restructuring Package for Handloom Sector" of rs. 3884 crore.
