  • Organizations shrinking into a screen with hybrid work models

With the hybrid model as the future of workplaces, people would continue to work from home on some days of the week. In the last fifteen months we have seen organisations across the world see themselves shrink into a screen. Virtual existence and work from home became a way of life as workers embraced the new normal despite several glitches. The future of a hybrid modern workplace depends on how companies can also create a more connected distributed workforce. The world has shifted towards a more distributed workforce, and with recent global events, hybrid work is here to stay. Users now expect to connect from anywhere and on any device, while security teams have the same complex, piecemeal and time-consuming solutions. It is time to rethink security.

The idea is to focus on basic safety protocols, cleanliness, routine sanitisation, and adjusting space density to maintain distance. With agility, innovation, and quick response to customer needs being the strengths, a flexible workspace is an achievable concept for the organizations. On these lines, employees of bigger corporations are now expecting the adoption of similar restructuring. Change is always constant and it is inevitable. However, this pandemic has made us realise that we are capable of change; enabling remote workforces, adapting to changing customer behaviours or even reviewing and changing entire business models, we have seen it all in the last year. Technology is the common denominator here, and it is now more influential than ever. The digital economy triggered by the pandemic promises to bring in an unprecedented confluence of people, businesses, and things that reconstruct existing business models.

  • Open source enables new capabilities and improves the efficiency of a project

We have learnt how data transmission and transactions became critical, as consumers dramatically increased their use of online services for things like shopping, healthcare and entertainment. Businesses rapidly adapted to this changing behaviour and the market uncertainties that came with it. The ability to quickly pivot in response to rapid change under very tight timelines was once almost unimaginable, but companies that are data-driven thrived. A study by Tableau and YouGov among IT decision-makers in Singapore, Australia, India and Japan, found that 82% of data-driven companies derived critical advantages during the pandemic by making faster strategic decisions and by making their businesses more agile. Rapid technological innovation works best when data is easily accessible, and enterprises are best served when they adopt modern technologies like open source database software.

In a Red Hat survey, 52% of Asia-Pacific respondents said they use open source databases, highlighting the prominence of open source in the region. Unlike proprietary databases, open source databases enable developers to ‘fail fast’, a concept in DevOps and agile, whereby developers work with small increments of code that allow them to detect problems early and fix them while still in development. Open source databases enable developers to rapidly try new capabilities that speed innovation and improve the efficiency of their projects.

  • The saga behind the computer chip shortage

Hundreds of billions will be spent by governments and corporations in coming years on a 'chip race' with geopolitical as well as economic implications. The stay-at-home era caused by Covid-19 pushed demand beyond levels projected by chipmakers. Lockdowns spurred growth in sales of laptops to its highest in a decade. There is worldwide dependence on two Asian powerhouses -- Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. and Samsung Electronics Co. -- a reliance exacerbated by the pandemic and rising U.S.-China tensions even before the current deficit.

Home-networking gears, webcams and monitors were snapped up as office work moved out of the office, and Chromebooks as school left school. Sales also jumped for home appliances from TVs to air purifiers, all of which now come with customized chips. PC makers began warning about tight supply of semiconductors early in 2020. Then by mid-year, Huawei Technologies Co. -- a major smartphone and networking gear maker -- began hoarding components to ensure its survival from U.S. sanctions that threatened to cut it off from its primary suppliers. Other Chinese companies followed suit, and the country’s imports of chips climbed to almost 380 billion dollars in 2020 -- making up almost a fifth of the country’s overall imports for the year. Chip shortages are expected to wipe out 61 billion dollars of sales for automakers alone this year and delay the production of a million vehicles in the March quarter. Not only cars but possibly a broad spectrum of chip-heavy products from phones to gaming consoles could see shortages or price hikes. With all this we are expecting a “serious imbalance" to pose a problem to the chip business this year.

  • Global eCommerce Payment Frauds spikes In 2021

In one hand, the COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the adoption of e-commerce worldwide, on the other, it has led to the rise of e-commerce related frauds. According to a new study from Juniper Research, it has been found out that the value of e-commerce fraud-related losses has risen from $17.5 billion in 2020 to $20 billion by 2021, a staggering growth of a whopping 18% within a single year. The research found out that threat actors, as of late, are targeting consumers as they have increased their online shopping. And this, in turn, is exposing the insecure fraud mitigation processes of merchants who are not very familiar with the overwhelming fraud challenges that exist in the e-commerce space.

Increased security can easily lead to increased friction for consumers when it comes to payments. The new research report found out that while merchants are inclined towards reducing e-com fraud risks from their current levels, they are hesitant to introduce extra friction in the checkout process. Juniper Research found also revealed that one way to address this would be to include clear messaging about security checks to consumers and use automated behavioural analytics, which leverages A.I. to preserve the user experience, aka UX. The research highlighted that, merchants would need to make sure the extra layer of security checks are well justified to the user. Only then can they prevent higher cart abandonment rates while making sure they are lowering fraud risks at the same time.

  • Healthcare Technology Tools Are Making The Difference

Digital technologies are being harnessed to support the public-health response to COVID-19 worldwide, including population surveillance, case identification, contact tracing and evaluation of interventions on the basis of mobility data and communication with the public. As India is grappling with the unprecedented medical crisis, the hospitals and frontline medical workers are undergoing immense physical and mental strain. From double shifts and disturbing scenes of pain and suffering, to the daily fight and often loss of life, are taking a toll on their wellbeing. The massive, nationwide vaccination drives to contain the virus, is further adding more burden on the already exhausted healthcare professionals.

Under such dire circumstances, smart technology adoptions and tech enabled tools can come to the rescue to not only help streamline operations but to also drive efficiency and reduce the burden. While digital healthcare tools have been around for a while, the pandemic in 2020 accelerated tech adoption, both for patients as well as the healthcare provider fraternity. Telemedicine, video consultations, wearable tech for monitoring vitals and AI powered assistants for patients needing constant care, have all become significant, as the pandemic forced the human population around the globe, into isolation. Needless to say, the pandemic has made it imperative to embrace tech solutions faster, to handle the crisis.

  • FragAttacks to impact all modern security protocols of Wi-Fi

    #fragattacks #wifi

As the world gets more connected, malicious users will find a way to get to the commoner. Wi-Fi's wavebands have relatively high absorption and work best for line-of-sight use. Many common obstructions such as walls, pillars, home appliances, etc. may greatly reduce range, but this also helps minimize interference between different networks in crowded environments. An access point (or hotspot) often has a range of about 20 metres (66 feet) indoors while some modern access points claim up to a 150-metre (490-foot) range outdoors. Newly Discovered WiFi Flaws that is FragAttacks stand for fragmentation and aggregation attacks, derive from the initial design of Wi-Fi protocols and several programming misconfigurations introduced to Wi-Fi devices.

These vulnerabilities surprise many due to the substantial improvements in WiFi security. For one, the defences against KRACK were proven entirely secure. This—coupled with the latest WPA3 security—which also went through improvements—made WiFI much safer than before. FragAttacks vulnerabilities are divided into two major categories: Design Flaws and Implementation Vulnerabilities. Design Flaws are flaws within the WiFi standard itself. These are found in most devices but are difficult to attack due to them requiring user interaction or unique network settings. Implementation vulnerabilities, however, are easier to attack. However, features that were not adopted into practice and parts of WiFi that were not widely studied earlier led to newly discovered design flaws and brought the security holes to be abused to proceed with sophisticated attacks, including those aimed at seizing control over outdated Windows 7 installations inside a local network.

  • Newly Discovered WiFi Flaws, allows adversaries to take control

    #wifi #fragattack

Wi-Fi is a family of wireless network protocols, based on the IEEE 802.11 family of standards, which are commonly used for local area networking of devices and Internet access, allowing nearby digital devices to exchange data by radio waves. These are the most widely used computer networks in the world, used globally in home and small office networks to link desktop and laptop, computers, smartphones, smart TVs, printers, and smart speakers together to a wireless router to connect them to the Internet, and in wireless access points in public places like coffee shops, hotels, libraries and airports to provide the public Internet access for mobile devices.

The term FragAttack (a mashup of ‘fragmentation’ and ‘aggregation’) is all about WiFi’s handling of data. FragAttacks could allow hackers within a device’s WiFi radio range to gather information about its owner and introduce malware to compromise intelligent devices such as computers or smartphones—even those protected by standard WiFi security protocol such as WEP WPA2 or WPA3. These vulnerabilities have to do with design flaws in the WiFi standard itself, while others have to do with how manufacturers of devices implement WiFi. With this vulnerability, adversaries might abuse the vulnerabilities to get the victim’s login details and hackers can exploit exposed Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices by activating and deactivating a smart power socket. A report says, many vendors have already released patches for some of their products.

  • The Pandemic Is Widening the Corporate Productivity Gap

    #pandemic #corporate

The pandemic saw many organisations rethink their business models, reimagine new product lines. Many companies adopted bold steps to face the pandemic crisis. Organisations went agile, employees many of whom had never worked a day in their life remotely took to Work from Home. Everything and everyone went digital. New McKinsey Global Institute research finds that there is potential to accelerate annual productivity growth by about 1% in the period of 2024. These are welcome and positive signs since these numbers double the pre-pandemic productivity growth.

The pandemic has witnessed an increased complexity in process, an increased need to connect teams across geographies, an urgent need to break down silos at workplaces. Enabling collaboration is the key to improve employee productivity. The Institute for Corporate Productivity and Professor Rob Cross of Babson College carried out a survey of 1100 companies and found that collaborative work is five times more likely to result in higher performance. A collaborative environment also helps lower costs, reduce timelines, improve productivity and increase return on investment by connecting various teams in complex business and cultural environments to promote common goals, foster shared values and build relationships. The Harvard Business School and New York University data is consistent with what we have observed at many companies: Poor collaboration and inefficient work practices have reduced productive time by 2% to 3% for most organisations.

  • No-code: big benefits with limited capabilities

    #digitalplatforms #appsheet

Almost every company is now digital in some way, with companies heavily relying on digital platforms and resources to communicate with their employees and customers. But most businesses weren’t born digital - including the traditional industries who often struggle to bridge the gap between business & IT teams. A no-code platform such as AppSheet can help many organizations easily build and maintain apps to develop, communicate, & save money. No-code software solves the problem of a creator needing to be, or afford, a programmer to produce a technical product. No-code frameworks are software design systems that allow even non-technical people to execute software without composing a line of code. These tools usually have a user-friendly interface and drag-and-drop capabilities, allowing you to envision the implementation process and describe the overall business logic with ease.

It is the framework of a programming platform that uses a visual development interface to enable non-technical users to build applications by dragging and dropping software components to create a full app. Users don’t need any previous coding experience to build applications using no-code. Low-code and no-code frameworks do this by generating ready-to-use code blocks—a series of codes for a given function—that can be dragged and dropped into place to run under pre-set limits. Reduce the cost of development by up to 80%: It’s no surprise that conventional and DevOps approaches for developing custom software are expensive. Up the stack, you’ll need to recruit precious technical skills.

  • Digital technology has changed the way new drugs are developed

    #digitaltransformation #dx #digitaltechnology
DX (digital transformation) means different things to different organisations. For some it may mean huge investments in new technologies, while for others it will mean strategic application of select digital technologies in key areas of the business. However, it is important to note that improving the short and long-term capability of the business to enable growth and increase profit should be a common goal, and managing the inevitable changes that DX of any kind will bring is a common challenge that must be addressed through the development of a comprehensive change management program.

When we talk specifically about the pharmaceutical industry, where they have extensive experience in imaging and diagnostics, they can build a platform that brings together a strong diagnostic and therapeutic core and specialized digital offerings, and systematically expand it across multiple functionalities. Digital technology has considerably changed the way new drugs are developed. Evolutionary algorithms, neural networks, natural language processing (NLP), machine learning (ML), wearables and IoT optimize the workflows in pharmaceutical organizations, automating the previously routine and manual tasks, and considerably speeding up drug discovery processes. NLP is focused on processing texts and natural language to infer meaning from the words and texts. NLP methods to help in evaluating the possibility of carrying out clinical trials in a specific location, and finding volunteers to ensure compliance with the trial deadlines and budget.

  • Digital transformation metamorphosizes business

    #digitaltransformation #newtechnology

New technologies shift consumer expectations, challenge norms, and put pressure on organizations to respond. Digital transformation is more critical now than ever. It is the holistic process by which an organization redefines and betters itself using the digital technologies which metamorphosize business and society at large. The biggest shift is to embrace digital completely and redefine the customer experience as a whole. Businesses today face a digital catch-22. Unless they succeed at digital transformation, they will become irrelevant. But digital transformation is costly, difficult and the required investment may be more urgently needed elsewhere in the short-term.

The coronavirus pandemic has accelerated the move to digital transformation as organisations responded to the need for staff to work from home, but as wider DX projects move into a higher gear, organisations should look to past failures to avoid making the same mistakes. The opportunity of DX lies in the fact that digital technology can now be applied to almost every aspect of business to enable greater speed and efficiency, but business leaders typically struggle to understand which opportunities to pursue and prioritise. In this hyper competitive market, medical technology companies are focusing heavily into accelerated product development while partnering with the best PaaS provider to help realize their overall digital transformation goals. Pharma 4.0 concepts are taking hold in pharmaceutical manufacturing. The industry's unique characteristics are driving investments in digital transformation by pharmaceutical manufacturers. A report states, digital factory revenue will top 4.5 billion dollars in 2030 with spending by pharmaceutical manufacturers on data analytics forecast to grow by a 27% CAGR and be worth 1.2 billion dollars in 2030, as manufacturers look to track, optimize their operations, and boost productivity.

Moving forward, CIOs need to think about the integrated technology tools and infrastructure frameworks necessary to help their organizations effectively and securely capture customer data, convert that data into valuable insights, and utilize those insights to shape a personalized and enhanced customer experience.

CIOs first need to embrace the need for change. CIOs now need to deliver IT in ways that suit their users, empowering them for new ways of working, engagement and collaboration. CIO’s need to align all new technologies with their organizations’ overall business strategies, budgets and needs for security. With more teams directly involved in shaping the customer experience, CIOs regularly partner with their peers to take their digital experiences from concept to reality. Indeed, IT leaders regularly collaborate with two or more C-level colleagues on customer experience management initiatives. In India, CIOs most regularly partner with their organization’s CTO followed by the CMO. Nearly 60% of CIOs now meet with their CMO counterparts on a daily or weekly basis, forming a true power duo.

  • Customer experience is top focus for CIOs

    #CIOs #CustomerExperience
New research revealed that CIOs sit at the centre of virtually every major business initiative in today’s digital-first economy, with businesses tapping CIOs to digitally transform their organizations and help shape their return-to-work plans. It found that 98% of Indian CIOs (compared to 92% in the U.S., 83% in EMEA and 94% in APAC) reported an increase in their responsibilities. While customer experience is a top focus for CIOs, the new “work from anywhere” environment has evolved CIO’s priorities to be first and foremost, employees and then customers. Today CIOs are leveraging external customer journey management practices and applying those same principles internally to enhance their own employees’ experiences.

In just a year, we all went from a world with digital capabilities to a digital-first economy, which placed immense pressure on many leaders, including CIOs—many of whom were tasked with taking on a range of new responsibilities. Besides the pressure to accelerate their organization’s digital transformation at record pace, they had to embrace their expanded role and influence as an opportunity to drive progressive digital-first programs and further collaborate with other business leaders to succeed in today’s new digital-first reality.

  • Multiple contempt petitions filed in SC against RBI Governor

India’s journey of creating a #digitalfinancialinfrastructure has helped to advance the country’s goal of enabling financial inclusion and also provided rapid payment digitization for citizens. The pandemic has further accelerated the adoption of #digitalpayments with many first-time users adopting digital payments and significant uplift by merchants. According to a report, India retained the top spot with 25.5 billion real-time #paymentstransactions, followed by China with 15.7 bn transactions.

There are three segments that have shown positive growth. First is OTT that has witnessed an incredible 144% increase in the number of transactions. Second is the gaming segment which also saw a phenomenal 100% increase in expenditure and 154% increase in average ticket size between the two years. Finally, edtech saw a huge boost with a 78% increase in the number of transactions and a 44% increase in expenditure, within this period. At the same time, Globally, card-related fraud remains the highest in terms of reported incidents from consumers. However, fraud incidents associated with real-time payments were on the rise from 2019 to 2020 as fraudsters tend to target new channels. Real-time payments scams that were on the rise include confidence tricks (12.5% rising to 13.7 %), Identity theft (6 % rising to 11.6%) and digital wallet account hacks (4.4% rising to 6.2%).

  • Overseas investment helps in economic upliftment

    #economic #investment #fdi #fpi
India’s growth story may be slightly revised due to the ravages wrought by the Covid-19 virus. But there is still overseas interest across sectors, which indicates that investors are still optimistic about the country’s long-term prospects for economic upliftment. This, and the resulting inflow of investor dollars, has boosted the country’s foreign exchange reserves during the year under review by more than 100 billion dollars to 576.8 billion dollars as on April 2, 2021. The money flowed both in the form of foreign of foreign direct investment (FDI) as well as in the form of foreign portfolio investment (FPI). A report states, Foreign investors also continued to pour money into the country’s debt and equity markets, pumping in as much as 36.16 billion dollars during the financial year ended March 31, 2021. This took the benchmark BSE Sensex from a level of 28,265.31 on April 1, 2020 to 49,569.15 on March 31, 2021. Along the way, it touched 50,000 for the first time on January 21, 2021.

Another report states that the impact of the PLI scheme was the other star of the show. This initiative, which envisages attracting investments from companies that are looking to de risk their supply chains from their current over-reliance on China, has attracted investments from marquee investors such as Apple, through its contract manufacturers Foxconn, Pegatron, Wistron, and Samsung, among several others, setting up or expanding their smartphone manufacturing units in the country. It has indicated more than 70.3 billion real-time payments transactions were processed globally in 2020, a surge of 41% compared to the previous year.

  • The government pushing for digital transactions

Digitalization has become a part of everyday life. Digitization of payments helps a person to transfer money from his bank account to the payees for his day to day transactions. India is stepping in to the leadership role by moving forward to the aim of ―Cash less Society. The growth of mobile penetration supported by the government initiatives constitute the most important drivers to enable people to move towards digital payment systems. The prospects for FinTech in India’s financial system in 2021-22 will depend upon the degree of entrenchment of digital usage, which is, in turn, contingent upon the resilience of the underlying acceptance infrastructure, financial literacy and awareness of the users (both merchants and consumers) and strengthening of the customer protection and cyber security protocols in place. Today consumers can buy, sell, and trade cryptocurrency as a commodity or investment. Consumers are also increasingly showing interest in being able to spend crypto assets for everyday purchases.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has constructed a composite Digital Payments Index (DPI) to capture the extent of digitisation of payments across the country. This is a significant development given the sharp pick-up in digital transactions seen in the recent past. Further, RBI says in its annual report that, at a regulatory-level, for encouraging innovation in digital payments, RBI started many new initiatives in the digital payments space, which includes setting up the RBI Innovation Hub and a Regulatory Sandbox. The Reserve Bank continued its efforts towards global outreach of its payment systems, including remittance services.

  • Digital payment is the road ahead

A report states, nearly two-third of respondents (63%) agree they have tried a new payment method they would not have tried under normal circumstances, but the pandemic has galvanized people to try flexible new payment options to get what they want, when they want it. With this interest and consumer demand comes a greater expectation for businesses to provide multiple ways to shop and pay. In fact, more than half of consumers say they would avoid businesses that do not accept electronic payments of any kind. Looking to the future, digital currencies, biometrics, contactless and QR codes are trending as emerging payments technologies as people’s comfort with them and understanding of them increases and the use of cash decreases.

In India, payment systems recorded a robust growth of 26.2 % in terms of volume during 2020-21 on top of the expansion of 44.2% in the previous year. In terms of value, the contractionary trend which started in the previous year (-1.2%) got further amplified and witnessed a drop of 13.4%, mainly due to lower growth observed in the large value payment system, i.e, RTGS system and decrease in transactions of paper-based instruments. While UPI has grown by 92% in terms of the value of transactions to Rs 41 lakh crore in 2020-21, compared to the previous year, the value of retail payments transactions grew by 7% to Rs 41 lakh crore in 2020-21. Overall, however, the value of digital payment transactions decreased by 12% to Rs 1,410 lakh crore in 2020-2021 compared to the same period of the previous year.

  • Digital adoption has taken a quantum leap

Technology is becoming an integral part of our day-to-day routine and the coronavirus has greatly sped up the process. Digital adoption has taken a quantum leap at both the organizational and industry levels. During the pandemic, consumers have moved dramatically toward online channels, and companies and industries have responded in turn. The rapid shift towards interacting with customers through digital channels and transforming from traditional to digital infrastructure can pose significant challenges.

The tools and technology are making collaboration and remote work easier with a specific concentration on Software as a Service (SaaS) and augmented reality (AR). Both have proven to be technologies that enable highly regulated industries to collaborate across different geographies, cultures, and perspectives and make it easier to connect with and consolidate highly distributed workforces. Technologies like chatbot and virtualized patient care offer a mechanism to triage and distribute care at scale. Artificial intelligence and high-performance computing have accelerated research into understanding the virus and developing targeted therapeutics to treat infection and prevent transmission. New mobile contact tracing protocols that preserve patient privacy and civil liberties were developed in response to public concerns, creating new opportunities for privacy-sensitive technologies that aid efforts to prevent and control outbreaks.

Probably, Indian think-tanks must be feeling that India should have gone the China way long ago, and built their own search, social and conversation engines, much for their own massive revenues, growth and control.” Finally, everything we do on the internet is traceable and trackable up to a major extent. I personally feel that the government is fair in asking for these guidelines and all the tech giants should comply with them.

  • Growing Importance of Technology in the COVID Era

Across business areas, the largest leap in digitisation is the share of offerings that are digital in nature. Much has changed since the onset of the novel coronavirus. While it has swept through the globe and changed the way we view healthcare and hygiene, it has also transformed the way we perceive technology. We can’t deny the fact that technology can help us live more connectedly. We witness improvements and advancements in the ways in which tech helps us live more convenient lives. However, the COVID era has sped up these advancements and made technology go from a luxury that we could rely on to an essential, non-negotiable part of our day. COVID has made access to technology almost as important as wearing masks.

A survey finds that responses to COVID-19 have speeded the adoption of digital technologies by several years-and many of these changes could be here for the long haul. Another important aspect of technology that has gained wider acknowledgment during COVID is machine learning. All organisations are now using machine learning to make working from home, remote communication, and the implementation of medicine easier and more streamlined. With the help of machine learning and artificial intelligence, researchers are able to predict the spread of COVID based on large masses of data. Lastly, machine learning and data analytics has played a significant role in the treatment and research process of the coronavirus outbreak. Using the massive collective information from across the globe and incorporating AI and data analytics to form trends and gain insight on the virus has sped up the understanding of how the virus spreads, who is most susceptible to falling ill, and how the spread can be prevented.
