A Billion & One Voices: The Story of Vijay & Anjali Das
The story of Vijay & Anjali Das shows us how political parties actually effect the common man of India. Vijay and Anjali tells us they think well of a political party when it does more work for the poor. Their experience so far has not been good. They have to pay one rupee everyday to the Trinamool party shop committee or else they are beaten and face other problems like electricity being cut off. The fear of being beaten is what keeps them quiet and they pay whatever is asked.
Anjali says with the Trinamool in power, Bengal has become very unsafe for women. Every second day they hear stories of rape which makes her scared to send her daughter out of the house. In a situation like this how will anyone be able to educate their daughters she asks.
It is the work the Congress party does that sets them apart from other political parties. Indira Gandhi did a lot for the poor. A woman who always kept her word. Vijay and Anjali want a party that will not create unrest. A party that will let them eat 2 square meals peacefully. They want Rahul Gandhi to win. This is a fascinating story of two people belonging to different backgrounds, coming together for a bigger cause. Kashyap Nandan is a business analyst in a multinational company who moved to Bangalore for better opportunities. Apart from his career he's also interested in the well being of people. He is saddened that a whole lot people don't know about the schemes happening in the government. He would very much like to hold camps where common people are educated about these schemes. He would prefer a door-to-door delivery of these schemes in order to save poor people the trouble of dealing with government offices.
Shabbir Ahmed from Karnataka, is the general secretary with Youth Congress Bratanpura. Shabbir since childhood wanted to be a leader. He says poor people or uneducated people are not comfortable going to government offices for their pension or any kind of work. Kavitha Reddy a professional mountaineer, who worked with the corporate world for 14 years got attracted to the Congress party because of its inclusive nature. She says the ideas of Congress party represents the ideas of India. The only party which is most liberal in its outlook, be it religion, culture, women, gay rights, environment, or public policies.
Kavitha says when it comes to leadership styles the combination in the congress party is more interesting.
She connects with Rahul Gandhi, for his style of working more for the people and less for the media. She feels a lot of work that has been done by the Congress party has been away from the media. There is no hype created about it and people who need to know, know about it.

Sam Pitroda, Chairman of National Innovation Council shares his vision of India and says, "We have 550 million young people below age of 25 years in India and everything that we do at my age has to be about them."

Today when I talk to people in my circle, I find that they have 19th century mindset, 20th century processes and 21st century needs and we got to change that and it can only be changed with young minds. Jagathram has a small store in Rakkad, Himachal Pradesh. Three times elected headman of Rakkad, he opened his shop in 1991 when he resigned from his post. The Congress government he says provides pulses and oil at subsidized rates to the BPL families. Rice is given at Rs. 2 a kg and wheat at Rs. 3 a kg. 400 families have benefited from this in his village. He further tells us how there were no proper roads in Rakkad. The Congress government not only built roads but also got electricity to their village.
Jagathram says the Congress government has brought about a lot development in the last 64 years. Congress leaders have sacrificed a lot for the nation. Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi both sacrificed their lives for this country. Rajkumar a teacher from Nuhu, Haryana spends most of his time volunteering for Sehgal Foundation. His main aim is to work for the socially and financially weaker sections of society. He has helped create small groups of women in his community to bring awareness about their rights. Earlier, girls were not allowed to study in his village but now through various schemes and awareness programs girls have access to complete education.
He believes education is the only medium through which a person can overcome poverty and achieve something in life. '"A lot has changed ever since we embarked upon this mission" says Rajkumar.

Rajeev Gowda grew up in an idealist, public service focused atmosphere. His father and uncle were both involved in the 'Freedom Movement' and 'Quit India Movement'. Right from his childhood he had this urge to do his bit for the country. In his words "Take the mission forward". A professor with IIM, Bangalore and Director (Reserve Bank of India), his aim in life became to gain expertise and to harness that expertise to build a modern prosperous India.
He feels the Congress Party biggest contribution was to make India what it is today 'a united, democratic, prosperous nation filled with youngsters with hope and aspirations for a better future'. And the challenge before the Congress is to ensure that opportunities are created for those aspirations to become a reality.
Rajeev doesn't just talk, he actually gets his hands dirty. Like he did a Garbage Clean-up project with a bunch of youngsters. They went to a particular area, studied what the problem was, spoke to the community and actually got their hands dirty and cleaned the whole place up.

Sukhvinder Singh is a scheduled caste Sikh. There was a time when folks in the village would not allow a person from the scheduled caste to enter the fields. Then the Congress party made the law that ensured equality for all. His entire village supported him and made him the headman of the village.
He says the Congress government provided him with the funds he asked for and he used that money for various developmental schemes in the village. They used MNREGA money to do sanitation work in the village. One of his biggest tasks was to get government schemes to the people. And to make people understand how they would benefit from such schemes. He says earlier people had no idea about the schemes government launched but today with so much awareness it's the people who come and say 'Find out more about this scheme and get it for us'.
Sukhvinder feels the Congress is the only party that keeps everyone together. They keep in mind the development strategies for the rich as well as the poor.

Majeed came to Mewat, Haryana 50 years back. He has seen some tough times since. He built a small hut and lived with his wife and four children. Majeed worked as a laborer, he did all kinds of jobs like breaking stones, loading bricks, digging and construction work etc. He later learnt how to drive and would drive a tractor.
As the children grew older he felt his hut became overcrowded. So he availed the Priyadarshini Awaas Yojna that provided him with financial assistance of INR 90,100 from the state for the construction of a new home in three installments.
Majeed now lives in new home with his wife, 4 children and grandchildren a very happy life.

Raseedan belongs to Mehraula Village, in Haryana. She lives with her three daughters and two sons. Life was very good till her husband a wrestler, employed by the government was alive. With his untimely death she had to leave Delhi and life became tough. Initially, she earned a living raising some livestock. But that didn't go too far and soon she had to take work up as a labourer to make ends meet.
The Congress led UPA Government launched the mid-day meal scheme, that not only benefited the children but also provided lakhs of women like Raseedan a livelihood. She has now been with the school for a year.
Today, Raseedan is a happy woman who loves her job and never wants to stop working. She says "The financial freedom that this job gives me makes me very happy." She wants to provide a comfortable and secure life for her children who have lived through hard times.
By 2011-12 Congress-led UPA government allocated Rs 9,890 crore for the mid-day meal scheme. That is 7.5 times the budget allocated by the NDA government (Rs 1,325 crore) in 2003-04.
