A Billion & One Voices: The Story of Budi & Juglal
Budi and Juglal never had any means to support themselves ever. No land no oxen, not even water. They are marginal farmers who work as labour on small farms while their children used to play all day here and there. Because of the RTE launched by the UPA led Congress Government they managed to put their children in school. Now they are happy that the children are learning something. They feel education will open the door of opportunities for them.
The Congress led UPA government passed the Right To Education Act (RTE) in 2009 that makes education a Constitutional Right for every citizen. It has spent 8.7 times more than the previous government on Sarva Shiskha Abhiyaan.

The story of Vijay & Anjali Das shows us how political parties actually effect the common man of India. Vijay and Anjali tells us they think well of a political party when it does more work for the poor. Their experience so far has not been good. They have to pay one rupee everyday to the Trinamool party shop committee or else they are beaten and face other problems like electricity being cut off. The fear of being beaten is what keeps them quiet and they pay whatever is asked.
Anjali says with the Trinamool in power, Bengal has become very unsafe for women. Every second day they hear stories of rape which makes her scared to send her daughter out of the house. In a situation like this how will anyone be able to educate their daughters she asks.
It is the work the Congress party does that sets them apart from other political parties. Indira Gandhi did a lot for the poor. A woman who always kept her word. Vijay and Anjali want a party that will not create unrest. A party that will let them eat 2 square meals peacefully. They want Rahul Gandhi to win. They feel it will be better for the country if he comes to power and that's why they would only vote for the Congress.

A Billion & One Voices: Story of Majeed
Majeed came to Mewat, Haryana 50 years back. He has seen some tough times since. He built a small hut and lived with his wife and four children. Majeed worked as a laborer, he did all kinds of jobs like breaking stones, loading bricks, digging and construction work etc. He later learnt how to drive and would drive a tractor.
As the children grew older he felt his hut became overcrowded. So he availed the Priyadarshini Awaas Yojna that provided him with financial assistance of INR 90,100 from the state for the construction of a new home in three installments.
Majeed now lives in new home with his wife, 4 children and grandchildren a very happy life.

Dr. Shetty having lived abroad for 13 years is happy to be home, to the country that is now filled with opportunities. Sharing his experience and give back something to the society was one of the reasons why he chose to return.
A Cardiac Surgeon in a big hospital in Mysore, Dr. Shetty talks about the various health schemes that the government provides for the poor. The most popular one being where the farmer pays only Rs. 10 a month. The hospital does cardiac surgery for as low as Rs. 70,000 and the rest is paid by the government.
They do health check up for the poor and identify their problems early and if the patient doesn't have money for the surgery it is taken care by the government. He says "Millions of people have benefited out of it."
India is very different from what it used to be 20 years back. Today he doesn't think how his poor patient will pay because he knows he will be taken care of. He says we have everything the west has, technology, expertise and most importantly the passion to treat and heal patients.

K. C. Joseph, Minister for Rural Development Planning and Culture, Kerela says that the performance of the UPA 1 and UPA 2 government are remarkable. Talking about the scenario in Kerela, during the last 5 years, central government schemes worth Rs. 70,000 Crores have been initiated in the state of Kerela.
In the national scenario today, Kerela stands ace in the list, actually we can say it is a development model for India. We say this because of so many reasons, one because we the most litterate state in India. In health sector, we are very much advanced that any other state. We are providing free medical assistance in all the government hospitals. Kerela has adopted a slogan- Development and Care. We see metro rail, airport to building an international airport this is development. All the programs announced by central government of India have been taken off successfully.
Kerela is going to become self sufficient in milk production. The rural areas of Kerela is also hugely benefited from MNREGA scheme. 1,700 crores are spent on this scheme and the income goes directly to the welfare of families. Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana has helped farmers reduce the transportation cost. E-Governance facilities have brought services of government at the the doorstep of people.

Saneesh Kumar comes from a remote area of Kerala where there was an issue of roads and other basic facilities. Through the help of Rajiv Gandhi Sadak project new roads were built in his area. He tells us that with the funds from the Rajiv Gandhi Water project the government was able to bring fresh water to the people.
He says Rajiv Gandhi died to ensure the integrity of the nation. Sonia Gandhi took over the mantle of the party, built it up again and won the elections. Saneesh feels major changes have been made in the economic and technical fields under the Congress rule. Bills like RTI and MNREGA were passed. These kinds of policies and achievements have made us equal to the developed world.
He further says Rahul Gandhi's leadership will ensure that we unlock the power of our greatest strength that is 'People of India'. India will become stronger and more prosperous.

What do words like integration, rights, freedom mean to you? To Latetia Bruce Warjri, a young Khasi woman, they mean the world -- a world where she has the freedom to do what she wants to do, to go where she wants to go, a world where she can hold her head high, where she can identify with people despite differences in cultures and backgrounds.
Latetia is pursuing further studies in Law in Delhi University. "I have met so many people, who are not Khasi, who are not from Shillong...they are just like me," she says as her eyes twinkle with excitement. "I have had very fruitful three years."
She says tribals have rights, but real integration is the "integration of tribal values into the mainstream." Khasi tribe from the North East is one of the Scheduled Tribes.
Latetia's story is that of thousands of young migrants who come to Delhi and other metropolitan's in pursuit of higher education, and a better future.

Rekha was used to staying at home and doing all the household chores. The outside world seemed scary to her. But as luck would have it she got an opportunity to replace the Aanganwadi worker who left the village and went for it.
She has now been with Aanganwadi for 11 years. At Aanganwadi children are fed and given basic education. Aanganwadi's have played an important part in eradication of polio from our country. Workers like Rekha are ones who convince parents why these two drops are necessary. Now after so many years of hard work they have reached a point where parents come on their own for polio drops.
She further talks about her family who has always supported her. Had it not been for their support she would not have come this far. She started with the salary of Rs. 700 and now earns Rs. 5000. She is thankful to the government and now not so afraid of the outside world.

A Billion & One Voices: The Story of Sindhuram
Sindhuram was living in Bhakatsapori, Assam since 1995. In 1998, their village was struck by floods of unimaginable proportion. Everything was lost. All the embankments were destroyed and he ended up living in 'chang-ghars'. Sidhuram saw an upside to this natural calamity. He says "when the water receded, lots of fertilizing minerals were left behind". And thus began his journey as a farmer.
Today he is a sugarcane farmer and a Jaggery trader. He got into sugarcane farming as thought it would be more profitable for him. His jaggery brings him better rates because it is packaged well.
The Government too came forward with useful suggestions and advice. They got him money from Kamalabari ATMA Fund to cover his labeling and packaging cost. 34 farmers were able to get loan from Assam Grameen Vikas bank. Raseedan belongs to Mehraula Village, in Haryana. She lives with her three daughters and two sons. Life was very good till her husband a wrestler, employed by the government was alive. With his untimely death she had to leave Delhi and life became tough. Initially, she earned a living raising some livestock. But that didn't go too far and soon she had to take work up as a labourer to make ends meet.
The Congress led UPA Government launched the mid-day meal scheme, that not only benefited the children but also provided lakhs of women like Raseedan a livelihood. She has now been with the school for a year.
Today, Raseedan is a happy woman who loves her job and never wants to stop working. She says "The financial freedom that this job gives me makes me very happy." She wants to provide a comfortable and secure life for her children who have lived through hard times.
By 2011-12 Congress-led UPA government allocated Rs 9,890 crore for the mid-day meal scheme. That is 7.5 times the budget allocated by the NDA government (Rs 1,325 crore) in 2003-04.
