His case has become a focal point for anti-death penalty activists in the United States and abroad, attracting supporters such as Pope Benedict XVI, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and former U.S. President Jimmy Carter. The Georgia Superior Court has scheduled Davis' execution for next Wednesday, Sept. 21. Seven of the nine non-police witnesses who implicated Davis have recanted their testimony, and there is no physical evidence that ties him to the crime scene. With his legal appeals exhausted, the fate of Troy Davis rests largely in the hands of Georgia's Board of Pardons and Parole, which could commute his death sentence and spare his life. Yesterday, supporters delivered a petition containing more than half-a-million signatures to a state parole board in support of clemency for Davis. Democracy Now! speaks with Benjamin Jealous, President and CEO of NAACP, a leading organization in the campaign to stop Davis' execution. "It has been activism that has kept Troy Davis alive at this point," Jealous says.

Rajiv Gandhi murder Court commutes execution of plotters News Video
India's Supreme Court has commuted the death sentences of three men convicted of plotting the 1991 assassination of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi.
Chief Justice P Sathasivam spared the men, citing delays in deciding their mercy plea.
Murugan, Santhan and Perarivalan were members of the Tamil Tiger rebels who were defeated by Sri Lanka in 2009.
Gandhi's murder was seen as retaliation for his having sent Indian peacekeepers to Sri Lanka in 1987.
In 2006, the Tigers expressed "regret" for the murder which had shocked India.
The three convicts have been in jail for more than 20 years.
On Tuesday morning, the Supreme Court bench, headed by Chief Justice P Sathasivam, said the long time taken by the government to decide the mercy pleas - 11 years - was the ground for commuting the death sentences.
"We are confident that the mercy plea can be decided much faster than what is being done now," Justice Sathasivam was quoted as saying by the Press Trust of India news agency.
"We implore the government to render advice in a reasonable amount of time for taking a decision on mercy pleas," he added.
'Mental anguish'
"The Supreme Court said it is inhuman to keep somebody under the shadow of the noose for so long," the men's lawyer, Yug Mohit Chaudhry, told BBC Hindi.

കുറ്റം തെളിയിക്കുന്നതിനാവശ്യമായ തെളിവുകള്‍ ഹാജരാക്കുന്നതില്‍ പ്രോസിക്യൂഷന്‍ പരാജയപ്പെട്ടെന്നു കണ്ടെത്തിയ പാകിസ്ഥാന്‍ , വധശിക്ഷയ്ക്കെതിരെ ആസിയ നല്‍കിയ അപ്പീല്‍ അംഗീകരിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു.2009 ലായിരുന്നു കേസിനാസ്പദമായ സംഭവം . പാക് പഞ്ചാബ് പ്രവിശ്യയിലെ കൃഷിയിടത്തില്‍ ജോലിക്കിടെ ഒരു മുസ്‌ലീം യുവതിയുമായി ഉണ്ടായ വഴക്കിൽ മതനിന്ദാ പരമായ പരാമര്‍ശങ്ങള്‍ ആസിയ നടത്തിയെന്ന പരാതിയെത്തുടര്‍ന്ന് അഞ്ചുകുട്ടികളുടെ മാതാവായ ഇവരെ അറസ്റ്റ് ചെയുകയായിരുന്നു . കുറ്റവിമുക്തമാക്കിയ നടപടിയെ അനുകൂലിച്ചും പ്രതികൂലിച്ചുകൊണ്ടും ആളുകൾ രംഗത്തിറങ്ങി .എട്ട് വര്‍ഷം നീണ്ട ഏകാന്ത തടവിനൊടുവിലാണ് വധശിക്ഷ കോടതി റദ്ദാക്കിയത്. അവിശ്വസനീയമെന്നാണ് അവര്‍ കോടതി വിധിയോട് പ്രതികരിച്ചു .ആസിയയെ കുറ്റവിമുക്തമാക്കിയതിനു പിന്നാലെ ആസിയയ്ക്കെതിരായ കുറ്റങ്ങളില്‍ ഭൂരിഭാഗവും അവരുടെ മതവുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെടുത്തി കെട്ടിച്ചമച്ചതാണെന്ന് സുപ്രീം കോടതി കണ്ടെത്തി. രാജ്യത്ത് മനുഷ്യാവകാശവും മതസ്വാതന്ത്ര്യവും അനുവദിക്കുന്നതിനുള്ള കൂടുതല്‍ നടപടികള്‍ ഉണ്ടാവുമെന്നും പാകിസ്ഥാന്‍ കോടതി പ്രത്യാശ പ്രകടിപ്പിച്ചു. 2010 മുതല്‍ കിഴക്കന്‍ പാക്കിസ്ഥാനിലെ മുള്‍ട്ടാണ്‍ പ്രദേശത്തുള്ള ജയിലില്‍ ഏകാന്ത തടവിലായിരുന്നു ആസിയ. ജയിലിനുള്ളില്‍ കൊലപ്പെടുത്തുന്നവര്‍ക്ക് അഞ്ചു ലക്ഷം രൂപ നല്‍കാമെന്ന് ഒരു മുസ്ലീം പണ്ഡിതന്‍ പരസ്യമായി പ്രഖ്യാപിച്ചിരുന്നതിനാൽ സുരക്ഷാ ഭീഷണി തുടർന്നാണ് ഏകാന്ത തടവില്‍ പാര്‍പ്പിച്ചിരുന്നത്. കഴിഞ്ഞ ഒക്ടോബറില്‍ ആസിയയുടെ അപ്പീല്‍ കോടതി പരിഗണിച്ചെങ്കിലും പ്രധാന ജഡ്ജി പിന്‍മാറിയതിനെ തുടർന്ന് കേസ് പരിഗണിക്കുന്നത് സുപ്രീംകോടതി അനിശ്ചിത കാലത്തേക്ക് മാറ്റിവെക്കുകയായിരിന്നു.വിധി പ്രഖ്യാപിച്ചതിന് പിന്നാലെ രാജ്യത്തിന്‍റെ വിവിധ ഭാഗങ്ങളില്‍ മത സംഘടനകളുടെ നേതൃത്വത്തില്‍ പ്രതിഷേധ പ്രകടനങ്ങള്‍ നടന്നു.

DemocracyNow.org - Thousands of people who believe the state of Georgia is about to execute an innocent man are rallying behind the high-profile death row inmate Troy Anthony Davis. Davis was convicted of the 1989 killing of a an off-duty Savannah police officer, Mark MacPhail, but has always maintained his innocence. His case has become a focal point for anti-death penalty activists in the United States and abroad, attracting supporters such as Pope Benedict XVI, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and former U.S. President Jimmy Carter. The Georgia Superior Court has scheduled Davis' execution for next Wednesday, Sept. 21. Seven of the nine non-police witnesses who implicated Davis have recanted their testimony, and there is no physical evidence that ties him to the crime scene. With his legal appeals exhausted, the fate of Troy Davis rests largely in the hands of Georgia's Board of Pardons and Parole, which could commute his death sentence and spare his life. Yesterday, supporters delivered a petition containing more than half-a-million signatures to a state parole board in support of clemency for Davis. Democracy Now! speaks with Benjamin Jealous, President and CEO of NAACP, a leading organization in the campaign to stop Davis' execution. "It has been activism that has kept Troy Davis alive at this point," Jealous says.

Rajiv Gandhi murder Court commutes execution of plotters News Video
India's Supreme Court has commuted the death sentences of three men convicted of plotting the 1991 assassination of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi.
Chief Justice P Sathasivam spared the men, citing delays in deciding their mercy plea.
Murugan, Santhan and Perarivalan were members of the Tamil Tiger rebels who were defeated by Sri Lanka in 2009.
Gandhi's murder was seen as retaliation for his having sent Indian peacekeepers to Sri Lanka in 1987.
In 2006, the Tigers expressed "regret" for the murder which had shocked India.
The three convicts have been in jail for more than 20 years.
On Tuesday morning, the Supreme Court bench, headed by Chief Justice P Sathasivam, said the long time taken by the government to decide the mercy pleas - 11 years - was the ground for commuting the death sentences.
"We are confident that the mercy plea can be decided much faster than what is being done now," Justice Sathasivam was quoted as saying by the Press Trust of India news agency.
"We implore the government to render advice in a reasonable amount of time for taking a decision on mercy pleas," he added.
'Mental anguish'
"The Supreme Court said it is inhuman to keep somebody under the shadow of the noose for so long," the men's lawyer, Yug Mohit Chaudhry, told BBC Hindi.

കുറ്റം തെളിയിക്കുന്നതിനാവശ്യമായ തെളിവുകള്‍ ഹാജരാക്കുന്നതില്‍ പ്രോസിക്യൂഷന്‍ പരാജയപ്പെട്ടെന്നു കണ്ടെത്തിയ പാകിസ്ഥാന്‍ , വധശിക്ഷയ്ക്കെതിരെ ആസിയ നല്‍കിയ അപ്പീല്‍ അംഗീകരിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു.2009 ലായിരുന്നു കേസിനാസ്പദമായ സംഭവം . പാക് പഞ്ചാബ് പ്രവിശ്യയിലെ കൃഷിയിടത്തില്‍ ജോലിക്കിടെ ഒരു മുസ്‌ലീം യുവതിയുമായി ഉണ്ടായ വഴക്കിൽ മതനിന്ദാ പരമായ പരാമര്‍ശങ്ങള്‍ ആസിയ നടത്തിയെന്ന പരാതിയെത്തുടര്‍ന്ന് അഞ്ചുകുട്ടികളുടെ മാതാവായ ഇവരെ അറസ്റ്റ് ചെയുകയായിരുന്നു . കുറ്റവിമുക്തമാക്കിയ നടപടിയെ അനുകൂലിച്ചും പ്രതികൂലിച്ചുകൊണ്ടും ആളുകൾ രംഗത്തിറങ്ങി .എട്ട് വര്‍ഷം നീണ്ട ഏകാന്ത തടവിനൊടുവിലാണ് വധശിക്ഷ കോടതി റദ്ദാക്കിയത്. അവിശ്വസനീയമെന്നാണ് അവര്‍ കോടതി വിധിയോട് പ്രതികരിച്ചു .ആസിയയെ കുറ്റവിമുക്തമാക്കിയതിനു പിന്നാലെ ആസിയയ്ക്കെതിരായ കുറ്റങ്ങളില്‍ ഭൂരിഭാഗവും അവരുടെ മതവുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെടുത്തി കെട്ടിച്ചമച്ചതാണെന്ന് സുപ്രീം കോടതി കണ്ടെത്തി. രാജ്യത്ത് മനുഷ്യാവകാശവും മതസ്വാതന്ത്ര്യവും അനുവദിക്കുന്നതിനുള്ള കൂടുതല്‍ നടപടികള്‍ ഉണ്ടാവുമെന്നും പാകിസ്ഥാന്‍ കോടതി പ്രത്യാശ പ്രകടിപ്പിച്ചു. 2010 മുതല്‍ കിഴക്കന്‍ പാക്കിസ്ഥാനിലെ മുള്‍ട്ടാണ്‍ പ്രദേശത്തുള്ള ജയിലില്‍ ഏകാന്ത തടവിലായിരുന്നു ആസിയ. ജയിലിനുള്ളില്‍ കൊലപ്പെടുത്തുന്നവര്‍ക്ക് അഞ്ചു ലക്ഷം രൂപ നല്‍കാമെന്ന് ഒരു മുസ്ലീം പണ്ഡിതന്‍ പരസ്യമായി പ്രഖ്യാപിച്ചിരുന്നതിനാൽ സുരക്ഷാ ഭീഷണി തുടർന്നാണ് ഏകാന്ത തടവില്‍ പാര്‍പ്പിച്ചിരുന്നത്. കഴിഞ്ഞ ഒക്ടോബറില്‍ ആസിയയുടെ അപ്പീല്‍ കോടതി പരിഗണിച്ചെങ്കിലും പ്രധാന ജഡ്ജി പിന്‍മാറിയതിനെ തുടർന്ന് കേസ് പരിഗണിക്കുന്നത് സുപ്രീംകോടതി അനിശ്ചിത കാലത്തേക്ക് മാറ്റിവെക്കുകയായിരിന്നു.വിധി പ്രഖ്യാപിച്ചതിന് പിന്നാലെ രാജ്യത്തിന്‍റെ വിവിധ ഭാഗങ്ങളില്‍ മത സംഘടനകളുടെ നേതൃത്വത്തില്‍ പ്രതിഷേധ പ്രകടനങ്ങള്‍ നടന്നു.
