Rhode Island's Olivia Culpo crowned Miss Universe, marking Miss USA's 1st win since 1997
A 20-year-old Boston University sophomore and a self-described "cellist-nerd" brought the Miss Universe crown back to the United States for the first time in more than a decade when she won the televised contest Wednesday.
Olivia Culpo beat out 88 other beauty queens from six continents at the Planet Hollywood casino on the Las Vegas Strip to take the title from outgoing champion Leila Lopes of Angola.
Culpo wore a tight navy blue mini-dress with a sequined bodice as she walked on stage for the competition's opening number. Later in the night, she strutted in a purple and blue bikini, and donned a wintery red velvet gown with a plunging neckline.
Culpo's coronation ends a long losing spell for the U.S. in the competition co-owned by Donald Trump and NBC. An American had not won the Miss Universe title since Brook Lee won in 1997.
No one seemed more surprised than Culpo's family, who "looked at her like she had three heads" when told them she was entering the Miss Rhode Island contest last year, her father Peter recalled.
"We didn't know a thing about pageants," he said.
She won that contest in a rented $20 dress with a hole in it and then began working out, dieting, and studying current events on flashcards to compete for the Miss USA crown.

Olivia Culpo of Rhode Island was named Miss USA on Sunday after saying it would be fair for transgendered contestants to win the pageant, giving her a crown that she will wear when representing the United States at the Miss Universe pageant later this year.
Culpo, 20, competed in the traditional swimsuit and evening gown competitions at the Las Vegas pageant, but also answered a question - tweeted in from an audience member - about an issue that earlier this year vexed the organizers of the Miss Universe pageant in Canada when a transgendered woman wanted to compete.
Culpo was asked if it was fair that a transgender woman would win Miss USA over a natural born woman, and she answered, “I do think that would be fair, but I can understand that people would be a little apprehensive to take that road.”
She went on to say that there are “so many people out there who have a need to change for a happier life. I do accept that because I believe it is a free country.”
The audience reaction seemed mixed initially but quickly turned to cheers and Culpo gave two thumbs ups.
Later, when the winner’s crown was placed on Culpo’s head, tears came to her eyes as she accepted the congratulations of fellow contestants and walked the stage as the new Miss USA in a flowing, purple evening gown that was among the few splashes of color in a competition that featured several white dress.

Miss USA 2013, the 62nd Miss USA pageant, will be held on June 16, 2013 at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. Drone videos have become much of a craze all over the world, but you probably haven't seen one as bizarre as this.
Footage captured by drone pilot Kevin Miller, from San Diego, US, shows a man sunbathing on top of a huge wind turbine in Rhode Island.
Noticing the drone, the man waves as it hovers in the air.
It is unclear how the man got on top of the turbine, but the footage reveals an open hatch at the top where the man could have climbed through via a rung ladder inside the structure's support column.

Culpo will represent the United States at the 61st Miss Universe pageant later this year. An American has not been named Miss Universe since Brook Lee won the title in 1997.
