A Billion & One Voices: The Story of Shabbir & Kashyap
This is a fascinating story of two people belonging to different backgrounds, coming together for a bigger cause. Kashyap Nandan is a business analyst in a multinational company who moved to Bangalore for better opportunities. Apart from his career he's also interested in the well being of people. He is saddened that a whole lot people don't know about the schemes happening in the government. He would very much like to hold camps where common people are educated about these schemes. He would prefer a door-to-door delivery of these schemes in order to save poor people the trouble of dealing with government offices.
Shabbir Ahmed from Karnataka, is the general secretary with Youth Congress Bratanpura. Shabbir since childhood wanted to be a leader. He says poor people or uneducated people are not comfortable going to government offices for their pension or any kind of work. They are marginal farmers who work as labour on small farms while their children used to play all day here and there. Because of the RTE launched by the UPA led Congress Government they managed to put their children in school. Now they are happy that the children are learning something. They feel education will open the door of opportunities for them.
The Congress led UPA government passed the Right To Education Act (RTE) in 2009 that makes education a Constitutional Right for every citizen. It has spent 8.7 times more than the previous government on Sarva Shiskha Abhiyaan.

Maan Singh has been living in Paharganj (New Delhi) for the last 18 years. He belongs to Rajasthan and came to Delhi looking for work. He works as a porter at the railway station.
Maan Singh says, "Its the poor man that makes the government but unfortunately people don't want to vote." He further goes on to say, "People actually do not realize the importance of their vote."
He believes that there is only one party that does anything for the poor and that is the Congress party, so he will caste his vote for the Congress in the upcoming elections as well.

Today he owns 25 bigha of land and with an additional 55 bigha on lease from Aunioti Sattra he's able to cultivate different kinds of crops depending on the season. He is happy that he stands on his own feet and support his family.
Pradeep further tells us how he received a lot of help from the government. Even the gram sevak promptly responds to their queries for help. Government officials were very impressed with his sugarcane crops and jaggery making process. So, they provided him with 20 quintals of sugarcane saplings and insecticide free of cost. His produce goes to various places like Dhemaji, Jorhat, Dibrugarh and Tinsukia. Lastly he advises the unemployed educated youth of Assam, " Instead of running after jobs in vain, take up farming". They would be able to make a fine living.

At this very young age Sarita knows that 'service to the society' is very important. Following the footsteps of Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi, she plans to do just that. Hailing from Amethi her family earns a living by selling mangoes, guavas and berries. Sarita goes to school and loves to learn about different topics. She has also trained for a year at a government centre for tailoring. Attached to the Self Help Group she says "here you also get paid for the work you do".
Sarita will always vote for Rahul Gandhi as he speaks to them, understands their problems and always helps them out. Roji John belongs to a lower middle class family. The first in his family to join politics. His journey started way back when he was studying in Jawaharlal Nehru University. He won the NSUI elections in his student days and is now the President of National Students Union of India.
Those were the days when Rahul Gandhi had introduced an open membership in NSUI and Youth Congress. His (Rahul Gandhi) aim was to motivate young minds to join politics, contest elections and frame policies for the county. Roji John was given the task of conducting elections in different states.
His first assignment was in Chhattisgarh, where no other organization was willing to go and interact with the students. He cherishes the one month he spent in Dantewada identifying students, motivating them to join NSUI. Over there youngsters didn't join the naxal activities by choice, they were forced into it. They became part of an organization(NSUI) which had a national network. The felt empowered and in return wanted to do something for the students community in that particular area. Truly a memorable experience for Roji.
