Retail inflation hits eight-month high, rises to 3.18% in June
Retail inflation has risen to 3.18% in June from 3.05% in May on higher food prices, hitting an eight-month high, the government said on Friday, but stayed below the central bank's medium-term target of 4% for an eleventh straight month. Annual retail inflation in June was 3.18%, up from 3.05% in the previous month, but below analyst forecasts.

India's factory growth dragged while retail inflation saw an uptick in the data released on Tuesday. Retail inflation rose to a three-month high of 2.57 per cent in February from 2.05 per cent last month on the back of modest spike in food and fuel prices. Industrial production slipped to 1.7 per cent in January 2019 from 2.4 per cent in December 2018, manufacturing index was at 1.3 per cent per cent v/s 2.7 per cent month-on-month.

IIP data: India's industrial growth slips to 3.1% in May
Industrial production grew at 3.1 per cent in May, mainly on account of improvement in power generation, according to official data released Friday. The Index of Industrial Production (IIP) had expanded by 3.8 per cent in May 2018. The expansion in power generation sector stood at 7.4 per cent compared to 4.2 per cent in the year-ago month. Mining growth was at 3.2 per cent in May as against 5.8 per cent in the corresponding month of the last fiscal. However, there was a slowdown in the manufacturing sector, which grew at 2.5 per cent in May compared to 3.6 per cent a year ago.

India’s retail inflation at all time high of 7.79% in April
The retail inflation number in April remained high due to the low base effect, worsened by price jumps across all major commodity groups. The Consumer Price Index (CPI)-based inflation, which the RBI takes as a reference point while deciding on the monetary policy, in April 2022 soared to an eight-year high of 7.79 per cent. It is as compared with 4.23 per cent in April 2021 and 6.97 per cent in March 2022. Core inflation, which excludes changes in food and oil prices, in April also touched a 95-month high at 6.97 per cent. It has remained over 5 per cent for 24 consecutive months. Inflation in the food basket rose to 8.38 per cent in April, from 7.68 per cent in the preceding month and 1.96 per cent in the year-ago month. High price levels of fuel and food items, especially of vegetables, spices and oils/fats, along with household services, contributed to the sharp rise in inflation, a level which is seen as being partly responsible for preempting the unscheduled repo rate hike of 40 basis points by the RBI last week. Among states, the highest inflation rate was recorded by West Bengal, followed by Madhya Pradesh and Telangana. Core inflation — the non-food, non-fuel component of inflation — in April also touched a 95-month high of 6.97 per cent, remaining more than 5 per cent for 24 consecutive months.
Experts say, the base effect may moderate inflation levels in May but it is still expected to remain above 6.5 per cent, raising expectations of a back-to-back rate hike in the June monetary policy meeting of the RBI. Inflation is being seen as posing the “biggest threat” to the economy and the RBI is looking at reversing all measures — liquidity infused and policy rate cuts — taken during the pandemic over the next 1-2 years along with measures to kill demand. India Ratings has been pointing out for a while that inflation in health services is turning structural, as it has remained in excess of 6% for the last 16 months. Industrial production growth slipped to 4.3 per cent in July, mainly on account of poor show by the manufacturing sector, according to official data released on Thursday. Factory output, as measured in terms of Index of Industrial Production (IIP), had expanded 6.5 per cent in July 2018. Retail inflation rose marginally to 3.21 per cent in August from 3.15 per cent last month on the back of higher food prices, the government data showed on Thursday.

22 Covid & non-Covid patients allegedly died following a 'mock oxygen drill' in UP. A viral video purportedly of a hospital owner in Agra has sparked a major controversy. In the video, the man is heard saying that he got oxygen supply from patients snapped for 5 mins. The man, in the video, added that this was part of an experiment to know who all will survive. Reports suggest the video is purportedly of Arinjay Jain, owner of Paras Hospital on NH 2. UP health dept has ordered a probe into the incident after the video went viral.
