    Days before the crucial fifth phase of Lok Sabha elections, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Shazia Ilmi has landed into a controversy because of her alleged "Muslims ought to be communal this time" remark. The party distanced itself from her remark and said she should not have said it.

    "Muslims are very secular. Muslims ought to be more communal. (They) do not vote for their own. (AAP leader) Arvind Kejriwal is your own. I say, it is enough of secularism," Ilmi, who contested the Lok Sabha polls from Ghaziabad earlier in the month, is seen saying in the video.

    Ms Ilmi told NDTV that her comments were "a play of words." She said, "I was making fun of this word 'secularism' which is used all the time. I said Muslims never think of themselves, they have become political slaves to a party."

    The BJP now plans to complain against Ms Ilmi's remarks to the Election Commission. "Shazia Ilmi must give an explanation," said BJP spokesperson Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi.

    In recent weeks, the national election has seen politicians using religion to court voters and making remarks designed to polarize votes, with the powerful Election Commission reacting swiftly.     A new controversial video which could spell trouble for the Aam Aadmi Party is doing the rounds on social media.

    In the video, which surfaced on Tuesday, AAP leader Shazia Ilmi said that Muslims' votes split as they were "too secular" and they "should become communal" and vote keeping in mind "our own interest".

    "Don't be much secular. Muslims are too secular and they should become communal. They are not communal and do not vote for themselves. Arvind Kejriwal is ours. Muslims have remained secular for long...have voted for the Congress and helped them win. Don't be so secular and look at your house (community) this time.

    "Other parties have their votebank intact and Muslim votes split. This is a controversial statement, but we should look at our own interest," Ilmi, AAP candidate from Ghaziabad, said in the video, in which she is having a conversation with members of the Muslim community.

    The Arvind Kejriwal-headed Aam Aadmi party(AAP) ticked Ilmi off and distanced itself from the controversial remarks, saying it does not endorse her views. However, Ilmi stood by her comments, which, she said is "play of words".

    The AAP said it does not believe in this kind of politics nor does it endorse it.

Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Shazia Ilmi came under fire from both BJP and Congress for her controversial remarks in which she says that Muslims should become "communal" for their own good when they vote this time and not be "too secular".

BJP hit out at the AAP leader demanding that the Election Commission must step in and act against her. "AAP practices one thing, preaches another. With this video its clear they are also guilty of practicing communal politics ..

Congress too slammed the AAP leader calling her statements 'reckless'. "Shazia Ilmi has said a very reckless thing," said Congress leader Meem Afzal. "Shazia Ilmi's comments are very childish. I am surprised that someone who belongs to such a secular family said all this," Afzal added.

Maulana Mufti Mukarram also condemned Ilmi's statements saying, "EC should take action. This statement needs to be condemned." Maulana Khalid Rashid said, "Shazia Ilmi's statement is condemnable; the Muslims have always elected only a secular leader." "This is an attempt to communalize elections,' Rashid added.
