Danica Patrick’s day ended in disappointment after she blew a right-front tire during the NASCAR Sprint Cup Subway 500 and wrecked on the frontstretch at Phoenix International Raceway.
The accident on Lap 185 was further compounded when David Ragan slammed into her No. 10 GoDaddy.com Chevy SS.
"Obviously I blew a right front,” Patrick said. “No real warning. I wasn't that tight either; I was sliding a little bit. I felt like most of the day I was chasing the rear. It was a little unexpected. I took a hard hit to the right, and then on the left. I'm fine.
“The cars and the tracks are so safe. As a driver that's a nice feeling. It doesn't change the fact that we aren't going to get any points really coming out of today, and it would have been nice.”
Patrick qualified 40th. She ran as high as 21st before she was collected in the 26th position. Patrick entered the weekend seventh in the Sprint Cup points standings after finished eighth last week in the season-opening Daytona 500. She finished 39th at Phoenix.
“It would have been nice to get these points here, and then ... especially off of our eighth last weekend (in the Daytona 500), and then have a decent run in (Las) Vegas,” Patrick said. “Then when they re-establish the pits and the garage area, we would have been in better shape. A week after finishing 8th in the Sprint Cup Series' opening race, Patrick's car lost a tire on lap 176 exiting turn four during Sunday's Subway 500 at Phoenix International Raceway and smashed hard into the wall. After rebounding off of the SAFER barrier, Patrick's car collected David Ragan.
Ragan hit Patrick's at such an angle that it sheared off the sheetmetal on the left side of Patrick's car like a can opener, spraying safety foam from the inside of the car everywhere.
Patrick, who got out and walked away from the accident, wasn't the first driver on the day to suffer tire issues, as teammate Ryan Newman, among others, had previously hit the wall twice with right front problems. She said that there was no warning of any tire issues with her car before the crash and that the car suddenly drove straight to the right on her. Patrick, a contender for Rookie of the Year honors, toured the high-banked, superspeedway at Daytona International Speedway in 45.817 seconds, tightly hugging the apron all away around the 2.5-mile tri-oval.
Asked what her overriding emotion was after accomplishing her historic feat, Patrick replied, “Pride. I’m proud of all the hard work that goes into making a pole car. It’s not just me turning laps, it’s so many other things. It’s all the attention to detail these guys put in over the winter. I can’t be more proud off them."
Sharing the same Hendrick-developed power that put Patrick on the pole, Jeff Gordon earned a spot on the front row of the 43-car grid with his lap of 196.292 m.p.h.

Patrick, who has made headlines since Speedweeks began while fielding questions about her relationship with fellow Cup rookie Ricky Stenhouse Jr., has made headlines again — for doing something on the track.
She became the first woman to win the pole position for the Daytona 500 — and a Sprint Cup event — on Sunday when the rookie posted a lap of 196.434 mph.
"Pride. I'm proud of all the hard work that goes into making a pole car," Patrick said. "I'm happy for them (the team). It was a fast Chevy. ... If you're anywhere but the front row, it's hard to see on race day. ... This just speaks volumes about Stewart-Haas Racing. I thought we were going to be 1-2-3 for a while."
The previous best starting position for a female in the Daytona 500 was 18th by Janet Guthrie.
Guthrie also held the record for the top starting spot by a female in a Cup race. Guthrie qualified ninth in 1977 at Talladega Superspeedway and Bristol Motor Speedway. There have been only two previous poles for women in NASCAR history. Patrick, who won the Nationwide Series pole position at Daytona last year, and Shawna Robinson in a Nationwide race in Atlanta in 1994.
