    Srinagar: Restrictions imposed to thwart Separatists' 'Million March'

    The Jammu and Kashmir Government on Saturday imposed restrictions in Srinagar to thwart the 'Million March' call given by Hurriyat Conference (M) chairman Syed Ali Geelani. The restrictions have been imposed in seven police stations of Srinagar. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address a rally at Sher-e-Kashmir Cricket Stadium in Srinagar today. Large numbers of security forces have been deployed in the sensitive areas to maintain calm and to ensure no untoward elements affect the Prime Minister's visit. Restrictions have been imposed in the downtown area as well as around the venue were the Prime Minister is scheduled to address a public rally in valley.

    Restrictions imposed in parts of Srinagar

    Authorities today imposed restrictions in parts of Srinagar to maintain law and order in view of protests called by separatists.

    Restrictions have been imposed in seven police station areas of Srinagar, a police official said.

    He said restrictions under Section 144 CrPc have been imposed in Safakadal, Nowhatta, Khanyar, Rainawari and M R Gunj police station areas of the city, while partial curbs were in force in Maisuma and Kralkhud areas.

    The curbs have been imposed as a precautionary measure to maintain law and order, the official said.

Curfew-like restrictions had been imposed as precautionary measures since early this morning in downtown and Shehar-e-Khas (SeK) Srinagar, where people are being directed to remain indoors.

Both the factions of Hurriyat Conference and Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) had yesterday in a joint statement urged people to hold protests after Friday prayers against US action of branding Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) chief Syed Salahuddin as a terrorist.

Following the protest call, District Magistrate, Srinagar, Dr Farooq Ahmad Lone, imposed restrictions under Section 144 of CrPC in area under the jurisdictions of Police Stations Nowhatta, M R Gunj, Rainawari, Khanyar and Safakadal today as a precautionary measure to avoid any untoward incident. However, the situation on the ground was entirely different as people were not allowed to move out of their houses since early this morning in these areas. Hundreds of state police personnel and security forces, wearing bulletproof jackets and wielding automatic weapons and lathis in their hands, were deployed to strictly impose the restrictions in downtown and SeK.
