Satyajit Ray Honoured with Google Doodle
Google today celebrates the 92nd birthday of the veteran film-maker Satyajit Ray with a scene from his very first and most acclaimed movie: Pather Panchali.
Satyajit Ray was an artist right since a young age and he began his career as a commercial artist. His interest in films grew after a visit to London where he was inspired by the movie ‘The Bicycle Thieves’ and the French filmmaker Jean Renoir.
Satyajit Ray began his career in Indian cinema with the path breaking movie Pather Panchali. The Bengali movie won eleven international prizes, including Best Human Documentary at the Cannes Film Festival. The movie was the beginning of the Apu Trilogy (formed of Pather Panchali and the sequels Aparajito and Apur Sansar al featuring the lead protagonist Apu) and was released in 1955.
Ray could not gather the funds required for the movie and as a result the movie was shot over a period of 3 years, in breaks, as and when Ray could raise money. He even pawned his wife’s ancestral jewellery and emptied his personal savings for the movie. Ray rejected many offers of money from investors who demanded a change in the script. However, the government intervened and he received a grant which aided in the completion of the movie.

To celebrate International Workers' Day, also known as May Day, Google has honoured workers across the world with a doodle in its homepage.
May 1 is a national holiday in more than 80 countries and celebrated unofficially in many other countries.
First May Day celebration in India was organised in Madras by the Labour Kisan Party of Hindustan on 1 May 1923. This was also the first time the red flag was used in India.
May Day is a nationwide bank and public holiday in India. The holiday is tied to labour movements for communist and socialist political parties. In Maharashtra and Gujarat, it is officially called Maharashtra Day (Maharashtra Din) and Gujarat Day respectively, since on this day in 1960 each attained statehood, after the old Bombay State became divided on linguistic lines.

Saul Bass (May 8, 1920 -- April 25, 1996) was an American graphic designer and filmmaker, best known for his design of motion picture title sequences, film posters, and corporate logos.
During his 40-year career Bass worked for some of Hollywood's most prominent filmmakers, including Alfred Hitchcock, Otto Preminger, Billy Wilder, Stanley Kubrick and Martin Scorsese. Among his most famous title sequences are the animated paper cut-out of a heroin addict's arm for Preminger's The Man with the Golden Arm, the credits racing up and down what eventually becomes a high-angle shot of a skyscraper in Hitchcock's North by Northwest, and the disjointed text that races together and apart in Psycho.

Google Doodle celebrates fossil hunter Mary Anning's birthday
Google celebrated the birthday of celebrated British fossil hunter Mary Anning with a special doodle.
Born on May 21 1799, she became famous for important discoveries in the Jurassic marine fossil beds at Lyme Regis in Dorset.
The Doodle showed her uncovering dinosaur's fossilised remains.
Anning used to search for fossils during the winter months when landslides exposed new fossils that had to be collected quickly before they were lost to the sea. She nearly lost her life in 1833 during a landslide that killed her dog.
She and her brother Joseph found the first ichthyosaur skeleton when she was just twelve years old. They also have to their credit the identification of the first two plesiosaur skeletons ever found.
Her observations played a key role in the discovery of coprolites.

Internet giant Google celebrates the 107th birthday of American marine biologist and author Rachel Louise Carson with a doodle. Carson is standing at a riverside with a pair of binoculars around her neck and a notebook in her hand.
Born on May 27, 1907 in Springdale, Pennsylvania, Carson is famous for advancing the global environment movement through her writings.
Since early childhood, she had a great passion for environment and had spent a lot of time exploring the forests and streams around her home.
Carson published her first book "Under the Sea-Wind: A Naturalist's Picture of Ocean Life" in 1941, and second book, "The Sea Around Us", in 1951.
Disturbed by the excessive use of synthetic chemical pesticides after World War II, she began focusing on the ill-effects of chemicals and pesticides on the environment. She wrote a book, "Silent Spring" in 1956, and called for a change in the way mankind viewed the natural world.
Carson was attacked by the chemical industry lobby, but she fought against them and called for new policies to protect human health and the environment.

Rachel Carson was born on May 27, 1907 in the rural river town of Springdale, Pennsylvania. Initially she wanted to be a writer but her love of biology took her first to Chatham College and then to Johns Hopkins University for an MS in Zoology in 1932. Carson began her career as a marine biologist in the US Bureau of Fisheries and became a full-time nature writer in the 1950s.
She wrote a book ,Silent Spring which was noted and credited with advancing the global movement on environment.
Her most significant work was the campaign against the use of DDT (Dichloro Diphenyl Trichloroethane), a common insecticide, in the USA. She had questioned the logic of releasing large amounts of chemicals into the environment without a sufficient understanding of their effects on ecology and human health which eventually led to the ban on agricultural use of DDT in America in 1972.

Legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray was today honoured on his 92nd birthday by popular search engine Google by presenting a doodle showing a scene from his iconic movie Pather Panchali.
The doodle showed a famous scene from the movie where Apu, the protagonist, runs along with his sister Durga across the Kash-reed fields to watch a train go by.
Pather Panchali was Satyajit Ray's first film which based on the novel by Bengali writer Bibhutibhushan Bandopadhyay. It was released in 1955 and went on to receive several international accolades including the Best Human Document at the Cannes Film Festival.
Satyajit Ray, who directed 36 films, including documentaries and short films, was born on this day and was considered one of the greatest filmmakers of his time.
Ray's grandfather was Upendra Kishor Ray Chaudhari, one of the founding members of the Bramha Samaj and his father was renowned Bengali poet who pioneered the use of non-sense verses in any Indian language, Sukumar Ray.
Apart from filmmaking Satyajit Ray authored several books including the famous Feluda series and Professor Sanku series.
Inspired by French filmmaker Jean Renoir, Ray ventured into filmmaking creating several master pieces including the Apu Trilogy, Devi, Charulata, Kanchenjongha, Satranj Ke Khiladi among others.
Satyajit Ray won the Oscar award in 1992 for his contribution to the world of filmma
