മത ഭ്രാന്ത്തിന്റെ ഇരയായ ഒരു മൌലവിയെ ആരും മറന്നിട്ടുണ്ടാവില്ല; മതവിമര്‍ശനത്തിന്റെ പേരില്‍ ചേകനൂര്‍ മൗലവി കൊലചെയ്യപ്പെട്ടിട്ട് ഇന്ന് 25 കൊല്ലം തികയുന്നു
മതവിമര്‍ശനത്തിന്റെ പേരില്‍ ജീവന്‍ കൊടുക്കേണ്ടി വന്ന കേരളത്തിലെ ആദ്യത്തെ വ്യക്തി തന്നെയായിരിക്കും ചേകനൂര്‍ മൗലവി. മലപ്പുറം ജില്ലയിലെ എടപ്പാളിനു സമീപമുള്ള ചെറിയൊരു പ്രദേശമായ ജന്മഗ്രാമത്തിന്റെ പേരില്‍ അറിയപ്പെടുന്ന മതപണ്ഡിതന്റെ പേര് മുഹമ്മദ് എന്നാണ് .പാരമ്പര്യരീതിയില്‍ മതം പഠിപ്പിക്കുകയും പരിശീലിക്കുകയും ചെയ്ത മൗലവി ശാന്തപുരം ഇസ്ലാമിയ കോളേജിലും എടവണ്ണ, ജാമിഅ നദ്വിയ കോളേജിലും കുറച്ചുകാലം അധ്യാപകനായിരുന്നു. നിലപാടുകളുടെ പേരില്‍ തന്നെ ആ സ്ഥാപനങ്ങള്‍ വിട്ടു. 1967-ല്‍ 'ചേകനൂര്‍പക്ഷം' ആരംഭിച്ചു. മൗലവിയുടെ പ്രഭാഷണങ്ങളും 'നിരീക്ഷണം' മാസികയുമാണ് ഇതിന് വേദിയായിത്തീര്‍ന്നത്.
1993 ജൂലൈ 29ന് ആണ് എടപ്പാൾ കാവിൽപ്പടിയിലെ വീട്ടിൽനിന്ന് ചേകനൂർ മൗലവിയെ രണ്ടുപേർ കൂട്ടിക്കൊണ്ടുപോയത്.
മതപഠന ക്ലാസിനെന്നു പറ‍ഞ്ഞ് മൗലവിയെ രണ്ടുപേർ വാഹനത്തിൽ കൂട്ടിക്കൊണ്ടുപോവുകയായിരുന്നു. കക്കാട്ടുനിന്ന് അഞ്ചുപേർ കൂടി വാഹനത്തിൽ കയറി. ശ്വാസം മുട്ടിച്ചുകൊന്ന ശേഷം പുളിക്കൽ ചുവന്നകുന്നിനോടു ചേർന്നുള്ള ആന്തിയൂർകുന്നിൽ കുഴിച്ചിട്ടു. പിന്നീട് മൃതദേഹം മാറ്റിയെന്നാണ് കണ്ടെത്തൽ. കേസ് ഡയറി കാണാനില്ലെന്ന ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥരുടെ നിലപാട്, തെളിവുകൾ ൈകകാര്യം ചെയ്യുന്നിൽ വന്ന വീഴ്ച, വ്യക്തമായ സൂചനകൾ പോലും പ്രയോജനപ്പെടുത്താതിരുന്ന സിബിഐ നിലപാട്... ഇങ്ങനെ പല ഘടകങ്ങളും വിധി പ്രതികൾക്ക് അനുകൂലമാക്കിയെന്ന് കേസ് നടത്തിപ്പിനു വേണ്ടി ഓടിനടക്കുന്ന സാലിം ഹാജി പറഞ്ഞു. 2000 നവംബർ 27ന് ആദ്യ രണ്ടു പ്രതികളെ തൃശൂരിൽനിന്ന് അറസ്‌റ്റ് ചെയ്‌തു. ഒൻപതു പ്രതികളുണ്ടായിരുന്ന കേസിൽ 2010 സെപ്റ്റംബർ 29ന് ആലങ്ങോട് കക്കിടിപ്പുറം വി.വി.ഹംസയ്ക്ക് ഇരട്ടജീവപര്യന്തം വിധിച്ചു.
