കൊല്ലം-തിരുമംഗലം ദേശീയ പാതക്ക് സമാന്തരമായുള്ള കൊല്ലം-ചെങ്കോട്ട റെയില് പാതയുടെ ഭാഗമാണ് കണ്ണറ പാലം. കണ്ണറ പാലത്തിന് പതിമൂന്ന് കമാനങ്ങളുണ്ട്. ഇവ കൊളോണിയന് കാലഘട്ടത്തിലെ നിര്മ്മിതികളുടെ പ്രത്യേകതകളാണ്. 102 മീറ്റര് നീളവും 5 മീറ്റര് പൊക്കവുമുള്ള പതിമൂന്ന് കണ്ണറപ്പാലത്തിനു 100 വര്ഷം കഴിഞ്ഞിട്ടും ഇന്നും ജീർണിച്ചിട്ടില്ല .ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് ഭരണകാലത്ത് സുർകി രീതിയിൽ പണികഴിപ്പിച്ചിട്ടുള്ള പാലത്തിൻറെ നിർമ്മാണത്തിന് സിമന്റ് ഉപയോഗിച്ചിട്ടില്ല .വനത്തിനു സമീപത്ത് കൂടിയാണ് ഈ പാത നിര്മ്മിക്കപ്പെട്ടിട്ടുള്ളത്. വനത്തിനു സമീപത്തതായാണ് ഈ പാത നിര്മ്മിക്കപ്പെട്ടിട്ടുള്ളത്. തിരുവിതാംകൂറിലെ ആദ്യത്തെ റെയില്വേ പാതയാണ് -കൊല്ലം തിരുനല്വേലി മീറ്റര് ഗേജ്. 1896-ല് ശ്രീമൂലം തിരുനാള് മഹാരാജാവ് ബ്രീട്ടിഷ് ഗവണ്മെന്റുമായി ഈ പാതയെക്കുറിച്ച് ആലോചന നടത്തി. 1898-ല് സര്വ്വേ നടത്തുകയും, 1898 -ല് ലൈന് നിര്മ്മാണം ആരംഭിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. 1904 നവംബര് 26 ന് ഈ പാതയിലൂടെ ഗതാഗതം ആരംഭിച്ചു. അതിനു ശേഷമാണ് 1918-ല് കൊല്ലം തിരുവനന്തപുരം, 1958-ല് കൊല്ലം കോട്ടയം റെയില്വേ പാതകള് നിലവില് വന്നത്. കൊല്ലം മദ്രാസ് എന്നീ നഗരങ്ങളെ ബന്ധിപ്പിച്ചിട്ടുള്ള ഈ റെയില് പാത നിറയെ തുരങ്കങ്ങളും പാലങ്ങളും മറ്റും നിറഞ്ഞതാണ്. ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് എഞ്ചിനീയറിങ്ങ് സാങ്കേതികവിദ്യയുടെ ഉപയോഗപ്പെടുത്തിയാണ് പുനലൂര് തൂക്കുപാലത്തിനൊപ്പം പതിമൂന്ന് കണ്ണറപ്പാലവും നിർമ്മിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത് .എന്നാൽ ഇന്ത്യയില് തന്നെ അപൂര്വ്വമായിരുന്ന മീറ്റര്ഗേജ് അപ്രത്യക്ഷമായി. ഈ പാത ബ്രോഡ്ഗേജാക്കുന്നതിനുള്ള പണികള് ഇപ്പൊ പുരോഗമിക്കുകയാണ് . പതിമൂന്നു കണ്ണറപ്പാലം അതിന്റെ ദൃശ്യഭംഗി നിലനിര്ത്തിക്കൊണ്ട് തന്നെ പുതുക്കണം എന്നാവശ്യപ്പെട്ട് തദ്ദേശവാസികള് പ്രക്ഷോഭം നടത്തിയിരുന്നു. 2010 സെപ്റ്റംബര് 19ന് ഞായറാഴ്ച വൈകിട്ട് അവസാന പാസഞ്ചറും ഇതുവഴി കടന്ന് പോയതോടെ ഒരു നൂറ്റാണ്ട്പി ന്നിട്ട ആ മീറ്റര്ഗേജ് തീവണ്ടിപ്പാത ഒരു ഓര്മ മാത്രമായി മാറി . കൊല്ലം-തിരുമംഗലം ദേശീയ പാതക്ക് സമാന്തരമായുള്ള കൊല്ലം-ചെങ്കോട്ട റെയില് പാതയുടെ ഭാഗമാണ് കണ്ണറ പാലം. കണ്ണറ പാലത്തിന് പതിമൂന്ന് കമാനങ്ങളുണ്ട്. ഇവ കൊളോണിയന് കാലഘട്ടത്തിലെ നിര്മ്മിതികളുടെ പ്രത്യേകതകളാണ്. 102 മീറ്റര് നീളവും 5 മീറ്റര് പൊക്കവുമുള്ള പതിമൂന്ന് കണ്ണറപ്പാലത്തിനു 100 വര്ഷം കഴിഞ്ഞിട്ടും ഇന്നും ജീർണിച്ചിട്ടില്ല .ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് ഭരണകാലത്ത് സുർകി രീതിയിൽ പണികഴിപ്പിച്ചിട്ടുള്ള പാലത്തിൻറെ നിർമ്മാണത്തിന് സിമന്റ് ഉപയോഗിച്ചിട്ടില്ല .വനത്തിനു സമീപത്ത് കൂടിയാണ് ഈ പാത നിര്മ്മിക്കപ്പെട്ടിട്ടുള്ളത്. വനത്തിനു സമീപത്തതായാണ് ഈ പാത നിര്മ്മിക്കപ്പെട്ടിട്ടുള്ളത്. തിരുവിതാംകൂറിലെ ആദ്യത്തെ റെയില്വേ പാതയാണ് -കൊല്ലം തിരുനല്വേലി മീറ്റര് ഗേജ്. 1896-ല് ശ്രീമൂലം തിരുനാള് മഹാരാജാവ് ബ്രീട്ടിഷ് ഗവണ്മെന്റുമായി ഈ പാതയെക്കുറിച്ച് ആലോചന നടത്തി. 1898-ല് സര്വ്വേ നടത്തുകയും, 1898 -ല് ലൈന് നിര്മ്മാണം ആരംഭിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. 1904 നവംബര് 26 ന് ഈ പാതയിലൂടെ ഗതാഗതം ആരംഭിച്ചു. അതിനു ശേഷമാണ് 1918-ല് കൊല്ലം തിരുവനന്തപുരം, 1958-ല് കൊല്ലം കോട്ടയം റെയില്വേ പാതകള് നിലവില് വന്നത്. കൊല്ലം മദ്രാസ് എന്നീ നഗരങ്ങളെ ബന്ധിപ്പിച്ചിട്ടുള്ള ഈ റെയില് പാത നിറയെ തുരങ്കങ്ങളും പാലങ്ങളും മറ്റും നിറഞ്ഞതാണ്. ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് എഞ്ചിനീയറിങ്ങ് സാങ്കേതികവിദ്യയുടെ ഉപയോഗപ്പെടുത്തിയാണ് പുനലൂര് തൂക്കുപാലത്തിനൊപ്പം പതിമൂന്ന് കണ്ണറപ്പാലവും നിർമ്മിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത് .എന്നാൽ ഇന്ത്യയില് തന്നെ അപൂര്വ്വമായിരുന്ന മീറ്റര്ഗേജ് അപ്രത്യക്ഷമായി. ഈ പാത ബ്രോഡ്ഗേജാക്കുന്നതിനുള്ള പണികള് ഇപ്പൊ പുരോഗമിക്കുകയാണ് . പതിമൂന്നു കണ്ണറപ്പാലം അതിന്റെ ദൃശ്യഭംഗി നിലനിര്ത്തിക്കൊണ്ട് തന്നെ പുതുക്കണം എന്നാവശ്യപ്പെട്ട് തദ്ദേശവാസികള് പ്രക്ഷോഭം നടത്തിയിരുന്നു. 2010 സെപ്റ്റംബര് 19ന് ഞായറാഴ്ച വൈകിട്ട് അവസാന പാസഞ്ചറും ഇതുവഴി കടന്ന് പോയതോടെ ഒരു നൂറ്റാണ്ട്പി ന്നിട്ട ആ മീറ്റര്ഗേജ് തീവണ്ടിപ്പാത ഒരു ഓര്മ മാത്രമായി മാറി .
