നിലയ്ക്കാത്ത കൊടുംമഴയായിരുന്നു ആദ്യം. തൊട്ടുപിന്നാലെ മലകളെ ഇടിച്ചുതകർത്തെത്തിയ പ്രളയജലം ഗ്രാമത്തെയാകെ തുടച്ചുനീക്കി. ഒരു കുന്നിന്റെ രണ്ടുവശങ്ങളിൽ കല്ലും മണ്ണും മരങ്ങളും വലിയ സ്ഫോടനശബ്ദത്തോടെ താഴേക്കു കുത്തിയൊലിച്ചു... കേരളത്തെ ഞെട്ടിച്ച വയനാട് പുത്തുമലയിലെ ഉരുൾപൊട്ടലിന്റെ ഭീകരത അത്രയേറെയായിരുന്നു. പുത്തുമലയിൽ ഓഗസ്റ്റ് എട്ടിനു വ്യാഴാഴ്ച വൈകിട്ട് അഞ്ചോടെയായിരുന്നു ഉരുൾപൊട്ടൽ. രണ്ടു തവണ ഉരുൾപൊട്ടലുണ്ടായി. സമീപജില്ലയായ മലപ്പുറത്തെ ഭൂദാനം കവളപ്പാറയിൽ പ്രകൃതി താണ്ഡവമാടിയത് വ്യാഴാഴ്ച രാത്രി; ഇടിവെട്ടുന്നതു പോലൊരു ശബ്ദം കേട്ടു നാട് നടുങ്ങി വിറച്ചതാണ്. പിറ്റേന്നു വെള്ളിയാഴ്ച പകൽവെളിച്ചം പരന്നപ്പോഴാണറിയുന്നത് ഇന്നലെ വരെയുണ്ടായിരുന്ന ഒരു ഗ്രാമം തന്നെ മണ്ണുമൂടിപ്പോയിരിക്കുന്നു!
